Hello everyone,

I am considering getting a parrot and have been told that Pionus
Maximilian, Poicephalus Jarddine's and Poicephalus Brown heads are all
good natured and relatively quiet. If I understand correctly,
Jardine's and Brown heads are less nippy or nervous of the
poicephalus. And that the Pionus is very easy going, apparently very
innactive, compared to the other two. Based on your own experiences is
that accurate? What other differences exist? Out of the three witch
would you recomend?

Also started some reading on parrot behavior and education. I have
started with Mattie Sue Athan's "Guide to well-behaved parrot". For my
next book, I have compiled a list of books and authors that seam to be
most popular and well regarded. Can you suggest witch books I should
go for next? Wich are redundant or too similar? What are your
favotites?

Matie Sue Athan
-Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior
-Guide to a well behaved parrot

Bonnie Munro Doan
-My parrot, my friend
-Parrot Training: A Guide to Taming and Gentling Your Avian Companion

Sally Blanchard
-Companion parrot handbook
-The beak book

Liz Wilson
-HANDBOOK OF AVIAN ARTICLES – Volume I
-HANDBOOK OF AVIAN ARTICLES – Volume 2

Layne David Dicker
-Parrots, parrots, parrots

Any relavent input would be greatly apreciated...

Knowing beforehand what to expect and how to handle each issue that will
come up is 90% of a successful relationship :). Poicephalus parrots have
challenges that make them not always suitable for first-time owners; I've
known of more owners with biting jardines than any other poiceph. While
books are good, spending time on boards such as www.upatsix.com and
www.featherforum.com , reading the messages that have been posted (you will
see recurring themes that way), and participating will give you a much more
accurate idea of what to expect in reality than books. I have read most of
the books that you mentioned; some were written by people with rose-colored
glasses firmly planted on the bridge of their noses, and some included
theories that have been shown to be erroneous in the last couple of years.
There's no substitute for immersing yourself in the experience of people who
live with these birds day to day :).

There is only one book about pionus parrots that has enormous research
behind it - http://www.the-practical-pionus.com/ (©2004 so it's very
current) is where you can get it.

I have 2 poicephs and 3 pionus. For a first-time owner I'd recommend a
pionus over a poicephalus.

Thanx Owly
for taking the time to write and for the sound advice. Theory can only
go so far I guess. I will deffinately check out the forums and see
what actual owners say. About the books, I did understant your comment
but can you elaborate? Out of the list, witch is more realistic in
your opinion?

Peter M

PS: Thanx for the pionus book sugestion. I will check it out but I
would like to read more then one book. Nice to have more then one
point of view

Well that's the thing with the pionus book - it's not point of view, it's
facts accumulated by the author in years as a breeder as well as trips to
study them in their natural habitat. Other books on pionus I've read are,
however, points of view :).

It has been several days and I don't recall what I wrote that might need
elaboration? I apologize...I'm too busy and my mind is too full anymore...

Hi Owly,
you did suggest I get the book on pionus but since I am not sur that
is what I want yet, I would like to start with something less species
specific. Out of the list I have provided, witch ones do you think I
should read or not bother with?

Bonnie Munro Doan
-My parrot, my friend
-Parrot Training: A Guide to Taming and Gentling Your Avian Companion

Sally Blanchard
-Companion parrot handbook
-The beak book

Liz Wilson
-HANDBOOK OF AVIAN ARTICLES – Volume I
-HANDBOOK OF AVIAN ARTICLES – Volume 2

Layne David Dicker
-Parrots, parrots, parrots

Let me know if you read any of them...

I've read both of the Bonnie Munro Doan books, Sally's Companion Parrot
Handbook, Liz's books, and while Ih aven't read Layne Dicker's book that you
listed, I've read many of his articles and am familiar with his
philosophies. I've also read most of what Rosemary Low and Mattie Sue Athan
have written - among others. If you're looking for general parrot
information (such as your list of books suggests), here are my favorite
online sites:
http://www.naturalencounters.com/faqnew.html (or anything at the Natural
Encounters site)
http://www.aviannetwork.com/articles/environment.htm
http://hometown.aol.com/rhondastoys/page4.html
http://www.wingedwisdom.com/ww66eii.htm
http://www.petfinder.org/journalindex.cgi?path=/public/animalcare/bird/1.3.271.txt
And this SUPERB site - http://lmkandtux.homestead.com/Rbook4U.html -
contains an absolute treasure trove of information; more than you'll find in
any single book.
