her health has been a problem since we bought her. I bought her over
the internet and of course you always think its going to be okay, but
it hasn't been. Serious vet bills more than 10 times the amount we
paid for the puppy. How do you keep from getting taken to the cleaners
when buying a puppy?

whine and complain like the life of your newborn was simply a
commodity? I think not. The (rather unwise) method of buying your
animal online before meeting it has nothing to do with your financial
difficulty now. You use the words "bought" instead of "get", you
mention "bills" and "paid" and "taken to the cleaners", as if THEY are
the thorns in your back, NOT the actual heath problems of your dog.
Nobody's taking you to the cleaners--you simply can't afford to have a
puppy, or are petty, stingy person. That dog loves you unconditionally
and depends on you 100% for it's wellbeing. Shame on you for being so
heartless. Either shell out the money to improve the life of your dog,
or give it to a shelter or friend who can.

you take them home. Unscrupulous breeders produce animals that are inbred

The simple answer would be to go to reputable breeders with good references,
or take a chance on a shelter pup. As someone said, they can make the best
pets. I have a rat terrier/Jack Russell mix and he's the best pal I ever
had. Wouldn't trade him for a million bucks! You never said what the
puppy's medical issue was, but unfortunately I don't think you have much
recourse. What did the person who sold you the dog say about your problems?
Did they offer any guarantee?

How about the vet? A vet is a business person. finding a few vets in your
area, knowing how their business practices and the ailment you are looking
to cure at the time is likely to influence which one to go to. Finding a
vet to tell you up front what might be coming so you could return or refuse
the deal in the first place should have happened.
We learned the hard way not to take worm issues to our favorite vet. If he
or his staff fail to find the worm then they impound the animal and start
sending out for parvo test kits via express mail and more testing and five
days later they find whip worm. If our pet is going to get cut open this is
the guy to do it. Another vet might say oh you probably still have whip
worms in your dirt from before so here is wormer for all of your dogs have a
nice day call in a few days if not feeling better.
The contracts some of the self proclaimed reputable breeders force or appear
to intend on forcing puppy buyers to sign make some risk taking to get a
decent purebred without a contract in many instances in my opinion.
In buying over the internet I might recommend
this ckc registration (the Canadian kennel club is ok) is no good the
pedigrees are not verifiable like akc ukc with health testing data tied to
litter numbers and all verifiable.
the reason the dog is not akc registered should be asked. it could be
predecessors had limited akc papers or it could be worse.
without akc papers no akc games.
get youngest puppy allowed by law (first 12 weeks real important logic) or
older trained one.
