Recently a few lurkers have popped out of their duck blinds to ask questions
or make comments (which is great). One said he had been lurking here for a
few years before finally making his first post. I find that amazing! Makes
me wonder how many other lurkers are out there, hands kept well away from
their keyboards, watching the foolishness here like Star Trek characters
obeying the Prime Directive. So how about it lurkers - you out there??

I don't find it amazing..... newbies ask a question and frequently get stomped
on.... lurkers watch and decide not to put themselves in front of incoming
missles.

I for one will research for an answer very deeply before posting, for fear
of getting stomped on. But it is fun to watch this "little family"
interact. Especially the "blacksheep".

Yes!! Your so right Hunter.

Twice I've asked questions on different groups and in one case was talked
about and crudely referred too for asking a question and on this group I did
receive an answer from one person. I found it hard to believe that no one
had anything to reply of a helpful nature.

I've only been lurking for a few months -- just enough time to find out that
we've done it All Wrong and to know that delurking will be an invitation to
get slammed.

First of all, we bought a brand new travel trailer last month even though
we'd never in our lives been in a travel trailer before. We've backpacked,
tent camped, and van camped, but we're too old and stiff for that now. We
bought the Fleetwood Wilderness 25J because (blush) we liked the floorplan.
And we paid too much, I'm sure.

Second of all, despite being scared Silly, we're actually towing it with a
Dodge Dakota. It does have the big engine, the towing package (and all the
small print items mentioned), but we're at about 78% rather than 75% if my
calculations are correct.

Third, I know we have a stabilizer system and an equalizer hitch and brakes,
but I have no idea what kind they are.

And fourth, we plan on camping with our two small (45 pounds and 80 pounds)
exceptionally well-behaved dogs (well-behaved is an exception in their
case).

We took our shakedown cruise last weekend, from Chattanooga to Memphis. My
big fear was going over Monteagle Mountain, but it went up just fine and
held steady at 55 going down. The trip was great until the last night --
severe storms and tornado warnings. We got to hitch up and dump and pull
out in the pouring rain and drive back to Chattanooga in continual downpour.
No sway after we got the bar adjusted, no problems starting, and no problems
going down the bad side of Monteagle in the pouring rain.

Even though we did it All Wrong, we had a great trip, loved the trailer, and
look forward to many more exciting trips.

In all seriousness, this newsgroup has been a wonderful resource (and a
continuing source of amusement) in this entire process -- thank you all for
sharing your hard won lessons so freely.

I agree with Tom. You bought the rig you wanted. Went camping in it and had
fun. Now what's wrong with that.

Ya, you'll do it different next time, but that's part of the learning
experience.

Based on what you wrote your first experience was a walk in the park
compared to ours. I mean broken windshield wipers in a Oregon Costal rain
storm, leaking windows, a tow vehicle that was way, way under powered and
under weight for the overweight TT, a sister that broke the plumbing to the
toilet and discovering that the bottom of the bath/shower was broken so we
could not use it.

Wrong indeed...;-)

I've been caught!

Have to admit to being a regular lurker. I try to avoid the religious
debates regarding the 75% rule, holding tank chemicals, and tire
pressure.

The group is informative and at times, entertaining.

Oh, oh... this could be a fun thread.........

The first time I took my first trailer, my 21' Airstream, camping was at a
place in St Louis.....

I had never hooked up anything before, in my motorhome, except electric, and
was excited to do "full hookups". I got to the KOA west of St Louis and pulled
into my site. The guy next door, who had a new Avion fiver, ran over to welcome
me and started hooking up everything. /-: I didn't want to see ungrateful so I
let him, he was so happy.

I took the dogs for a walk and thanked him and unlocked the trailer and went
in..... I almost went to my knees! The stench of sewer gas was
overwhelming..... he didn't know there was no water in the P traps and had
opened the grey tank valve giving the sewer gas a straight line into the
trailer...............

Somehow I knew what it was and ran out and shut the valve.... put water in the
sinks and shower and threw open the windows and took the dogs for a very long
walk (c:

It wasn't really a disaster, but it did give me a moment. (c:

The first time I used that trailer the next spring, I hadn't winterized the
charcoal filter under the sink...... I hooked up water and was standing talking
to some friends.... one of them asked what the black water was that was pouring
out the vent.......... 0-:=

I shut off the water and ran inside...... the lip in the cabinet under the sink
held the water from pouring into the living room......

Wasn't my first camping trip since I've been camping since I was a
youngster, but it was the first real long weekend camping in our brand
new 1971 VW Campmobile...

My husband, 11 month old son, a young couple and I were headed for the
Gulf coast for a 4 day weekend since my husband and the young man had a
4 day pass. We packed the van and headed out with in the bright June
Texas sun. About 30 miles down the road the sky just opened up. I mean
you couldn't see 2 car lengths ahead. We pulled over to wait it out,
but the traffic was still racing down the road and we were worried about
getting hit so we pulled over about 20 feet off the road.

After about 20 minutes it was clearing and we were ready to head out
again. Of course the van started spinning in the newly created mud.
The gal with us was about 4 months pregnant so there was no question
about her pushing and I still didn't know the van well enough to feel
comfortable driving in this situation so the young man and I got out to
push. We each got behind the van and started pushing. My husband
slowly started moving forward and the van began catching so he increased
the power. Well, we got it out, but each of us was behind a wheel and
you guessed it... we were covered with mud from head to foot!
Fortunately we were all in a good mood and laughed at ourselves, changed
clothes and washed off thinking it was convenient that we had lots water
in our tank.

About halfway to the coast we stopped for some snacks and gas. After we
were almost to the coast I realized I had left my wallet at the gas
station! We stopped and called. They said they'd be open on Sunday
when were coming back and would hold it. Some more laughs...

We got to the beach and set up camp. It was a beautiful evening. None
of us had camped on Padre Island Seashore before as we were all fairly
new to Texas. My husband, son and I were sleeping in the van and the
couple were sleeping on the beach in a sleeping bag. About 2 hours
after we all went to bed we heard the scariest screaming! Seems there
are the cutest little kangaroo mice and tiny crabs that are all over the
beach at night. Sally didn't appreciate them running over her when she
realized what it was...LOL. Fortunately this couple was on the small
and slim side. We had a hammock that fit across the driver and
passenger seat that was suitable for a teen, that is one teen, but given
the alternative the couple spent the next three nights there. Some more
laughs...

The rest of the weekend went well. We had a great time and laughed
hardily over our mishaps on the first day. On the way back we stopped
to shower and get all the salt and sand off before driving home. As
soon as we got back to town in Corpus we stopped to get lunch. While
there I realized I didn't have my watch! I figured the only place it
could be was back at Malachite Beach where we showered. I called and
sure enough it was there (remember this was 1971). Some more laughes...

We went back got my watch, went to gas station and got my wallet. Some
more laughs...

I know this sounds like a trip from h*ll, but it was one of the most fun
weekends I ever had and we all had fond memories of the whole episode.

EL, let me pass along a lesson I learned early in my professional
career. My first mentor was a crusty old EE who was one of the
sharpest engineers I've ever met. I was still somewhat wet behind the
ears as an engineer. I had been out in the plant and had taken some
abuse from the blue collar types (remember these are the people who
are NOT educated). I came back to the office highly upset.

My mentor took me aside and told me this. He said "You know, John,
people can't get under your skin unless you give them standing to do
so." In other words, by letting those hourly types get to me, I was
either elevating them up to my standing or lowering myself down to
theirs.

That revelation just totally changed both my professional career and
my life. It made me realize several things. First, don't let the
underlings bother me. They have no standing to do so. Second, the
uneducated and unskilled types verbally assault their superiors in an
effort to pull them down to their level. If you respond or even
acknowledge their catcalls, you've allowed them to succeed.

This business model, where the achievers rise and the rest sink down
into the ooze, also works outside of work. Take this newsgroup, for
example. As opposed, say, a computer language or other professional
group, this one attracts even the lowest class to stick their heads up
out of the ooze and try to achieve standing with the rest of us.

If you look at the ones who are the most offensive (easy to do using
google since these folks tend to brag about even the most minor
achievement), you quickly discover common threads. Little or no
education beyond high school and no professional or personal
achievement. You quickly find that this quite closely correlates with
the quality and accuracy of advice offered.

In a professional environment, you wouldn't hang around with the
custodians or laborers. You'd want to associate with your peers and
exclude those beneath you. You can do the same thing on Usenet, only
much more easily, by using kill files (sometimes called filters.)
Almost all usenet readers have some facility, though the quality
varies widely.

The best readers assume you won't want to read most of what is on the
net and therefor make it easy to filter the stream. In fact, one of
my favorite readers is called "No News". One of my favorite windows
hosted readers is Agent. That's what I'm using right now. It makes
filtering through all the trash to find the few jewels very easy.
Agent has a free version if you want to try it out.
http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

Of course you need to set up your filters. You can filter both author
and suject/thread. Since threads normally descent into the ooze after
a couple of levels, I usually kill the thread quickly. I was just
about to kill this thread when I ran across your post.

You'll want to kill some of the worst miscreants outright. Agent can
do that very easily and can apply the kill across ALL groups. Some of
the worst are fairly obvious. Others go through phases (alcoholic
relapse, perhaps?) Agent handles that well too. Kill filters can be
set to either permanent or given an expiration date. I have a list of
people who are permanently killed and another list of those who
occasionally need a "cooling off period." I'd be more than happy to
provide you my lists. Write me off-list.

Once you implement a good filtering system, this group takes on a
whole new and pleasant complexion.

BTW, those of us who really try to help will try to show you a better
way but we won't call you names or call you an idiot for doing it
another way. That's what separates the truly helpful from the posers.

That will be changing soon.
Our house is sold, closing on July 18th. We purchased our 'retirement home'

I've used Free Agent for a couple years. I was never able to filter
anybody and thought only the *paid* Agent had that feature. I also
can send e-mail but can't receive it.

As much as it is maligned, I find Outlook Express to still be my

Lots of us, I expect. And I occasionally ask a question and usually get
really good information without getting my head kicked in.

But like EL, I know from years of lurking that everything we do, RV-wise, is
"wrong":

* we have the wrong brand of RV (Gulfstream Conquest)
* it's too small (20')
* we paid too much
* we travel with dogs (2 greyhounds, 1 English setter)
* we don't agonize over tire pressure, towing safety, or similar topics
that seem to get folks on this news group really excited.
* neither of us voted for Dubya

But we really like our little 'ice cream truck', and, for people with day
jobs and a kid in elementary school, we've used it a lot. I really
appreciate the information I've gleaned from this group (thanks!). I don't
post much because I wouldn't suggest, on this news group, that anybody
should do things the way we do. But our way works for us.

destination went to set up the awning.. There was a rip through multiple layers
of the awning while rolled up. looked like someone had slashed it with a
knife.. Unrolled, there was a rip down near the full length of the awning every
8" or so.. Man I was upset.. At first I thought someone took a knife to it..
It was a perfect awning just the last trip out..

After the trip and upon returning home, I looked up at the carport that I had it

This one has a damp theme as well, but more of the Mother Nature
nature.

Many years ago, first trip using my nifty custom built class B
type Ford van, my guest and I found a really great "free" camping
spot on the banks of an Illinois river. Had to go off-road along
an unpaved trail through the woods, around and down, down, down
to the camp area. Only 6 or 8 parties had found this spot, so
there was lots of room, privacy, rippling water sounds... great!
We thought we were so smart.

Well, it rained!!! Hard!!! A lot!!! Not one vehicle parked at
the bottom of this rustic, now slick and muddy dirt track could
get enough traction to climb out. We were all stuck. Cell
phones and four-wheel drive had not yet been invented so there
was no help there. Some frisky teenager hiked to a nearby
farmhouse and put out an SOS call.

Now, couple hours later, picture the friendly local tow truck
with heavy duty winch hauling all of us little campers up the
hill... along with the grinning operator palming $20 bills for
each and every one.

Great free camping experience.

I have been reading this group and alt.rv since about mid '99. During that time I've posted four or five times. But I've learn a lot. Always read most of the posts and save a few. Enjoy Hunter's post. If I see a Airstream I look for Bruiser. (SP). I even enjoy some of Mr. Sill and Mr. Osborn's exchange. Bill Horne in south GA is always good for a laugh, If my spelling or any thing is wrong GB in western NC will let me know in a nice way. Canoil will always give his ideas. I sometimes think I know all you people, the ones above and the others I didn't name. I live in my RV with my bride of 37 years. You will find me most of the time dry-camping at a casino in south MS on the coast or in South Alabama around the Montgomery area. Look for the chair lift on the outside of the door, the electric scooter, and electric wheelchair as I have quit walking. Let me say thanks to all of you'll for letting we lurk here for so long.

Hello friends, my name is Paul & I have been lurking here for about 3 years.

I follow most of the threads here unless they have to do with tire pressure!
After 3 years of listening to the conversations here I have the feeling

I am in the learning mode as I plan to retire in 3.5 years and the wife

about 2 years ago, and have our eye out for a 26-28' Sunnybrook 5er.

We have two cocker spaniels (Grizz & Buddy) who will travel with us,
and after a few shakedown cruses
we plan on heading for Alaska and spend about 5 months (May-Sept).

I am an electrical engineer & have to bite my finger tips not to jump

Happy camping to you all, & thanks for the wealth of knowledge that

Barbara, don't let the *size* of your RV keep you from posting.
Some of the frequent posters have class B's, which is not much
bigger. Although I generally only post when I can answer a
question, I have a pickup with slide-in that's probably at least
as small as yours, and I'm getting ready to go to PNWCO #3 - made
it to PNWCO #1 and #2, too, although #1 was in a tent as the
pickup wasn't ready for primetime. The size - or cost - of your
RV has nothing to do with how others in the newsgroup see you. As
far as I can tell, it doesn't make any difference when camping,
either (which may be a function of the places I camp, but....).

Depends on the question, the manufacturer, and the repair facility. I have
encountered some "RV techs" who didn't have a clue and could have done more
harm than good. OTOH, I have had very good experiences with the customer
service dept. of our TT mfg. Same thing on this NG - some posters shoot
from the hip, others know what they're talking about. I have gotten some
very good advice here and credit many on this NG for our largely uneventful

Our first time 'disaster' (well sorta) was during our trip to No. CA,
Heading back home from Roseville CA to the Lake Almanor area. Just
before the climb from Paradise a couple of kids probably early 20's
where waving and caring on pointing back and up. I looked at them like
what the hey. You guys are nuts! Till the passenger started working his
hand and arm as if he were using a remote to change TV channels. I knew
exactly what they were trying to get across because of the mental note
I'd made to lower the antenna but then remembered that, oh crap, it's
still up. I waved, thanked the good samaritans and pulled over. When we
got to our destination I raised the antenna and checked it out. After 4
years it still works find and does not even leak, but it is a bit
wobbly! ;>)

Well, I was trapped!

What happened was that I became a victum of a balky Usenet server at my ISP.
Previous to last month, the last posting that I made hit Usenet in
mid-August of last year. I posted for 2 months before finally waking up and
realizing that nobody was responding. A google search proved me right. A lot
of my blitherings (especially with what I had to say about 9/11 after being
at Ground Zero) got lost in the bit-bucket.

My ISP had replaced the server but didn't get it configured right. Lots of
times I couldn't even access Usenet. The rest of the time I simply couldn't
post, they wouldn't propagate beyond the local news server.

I was able to keep lurking through some free news servers, but not post
through them. And the Google option seems too cumbersome for me, I'm spoiled
by a regular news reader. And I'm not about to pay another news provider for
access that I'm already paying for!

Needless to say, I was real surprised and delighted last month when someone
responded to one of my postings.

I'm glad to see a bunch of lurkers posting to this thread. I hope y'all keep
on speaking up.

When Norm said "it must have been a LONG, LONG time ago" .... I

For those bursting with curiosity, it was probably around 1966.
(I'm very old!!!) At that time, motels cost less than
campgrounds do now, people broken down on the road could expect
someone to stop and help, you could safely hitch-hike, and the
small town (this was the boonies) tow-truck owner had just
requested we (stuck campers) just give him what we thought the
assist up the small hill was worth. He was enjoying himself,
this being the most exciting thing that had happened to him in

Ron,

I understand your trepidation, but really, it is the "stompers" that look silly
most of the time, particularly when a new person is jumped on for no good
reason.

I've been mostly lurking for a couple of years now - with only a few posts
requesting information and one or two offering a bit. I have been extremely
impressed with the prompt and helpful responses I have received - the group is a
wealth of information - thanks!

I just recently (6 months) joined the group and this is my first group
posting. I have been too busy learning stuff to post much ... and I don't
care for flame wars ... so my posting will be at a minimum.

Thanks for the interesting posts

I lurked for a long time. Posted twice, got stomped... quit posting. Then
filtered my NG so I don't know if I've been stomped. For those of you who are a
little thin skinned. Try the filters, it works fine in most cases... Really

That reminds me of a fulltimer I met recently. He and his wife have a large
Airstream trailer.

They were parked near a goof course and a ball whammed into the back of the
trailer making a huge dent in the aluminum. The insurance company paid him big
bucks for the damage but instead of repairing it
he superglued the ball into the dent where it sits to this day. Makes an
interesting conversation starter.

You may not have noticed, but new posters either eventually leave, or
turn into jerks themselves in self-defense. Expecting this to turn into

Oops. You must have missed it the first time around.

Actually, Hunter was using "goof" on purpose because Hugh mistakenly
wrote "goof" for "golf" in describing the then-upcoming Florida
campout. I pointed it out (in an allegedly humorous way, of course)
and other picked up on it. Since that time those of us "in the know"
(haha) have spelled it that way. It's become a tradition, sort of like
spelling "RV Robbers" with the capital R on Robbers.

(Gosh, you new people have just *got* to learn to keep up. <g>)

Umm, Tipper with a capital T is algore's wife; tipper with a small t
is one who gives money for services or one who tips sleeping livestock
off their feet.

Reverse tipper is one who steals money left by others on tables for
servers or one who stands dead roadkill deer back on their legs (at
the appropriate stage of decomposition when the legs are stiff).
Arrrggghhh is the person standing on the other side of a reverse tip
that has gone too far....

I submit that if everyone who reads here, posted here regularly, there
would be so many posts that most of us would give up because we can't
keep up. The whole thing works pretty well the way it is. There is TONS
of information available to anyone with the gumption to ask for it, and
even for those willing to wait or search for it. There is plenty of
entertainment for those of us who come here for that. There is plenty to
piss and moan about for those who come here for that. What we have is a
GREAT newsgroup which serves the needs of those who use it. Those who
don't use it because it doesn't fit their needs aren't a problem. There
are moderated forums for those who need them. We can't be all things to
all people.
