P.S. I typically drive at 60-65mph towing a small dirt bike trailer.
Probably is normal. I have a B-van which weights in at 8500lbs and I
get 8-12 depending on what I am pulling. I expect that your Tioga is
heavier than that.

Ken,
I have an 83 27' Jamboree with a 460 and usually pull an enclosed
14' moto-trailer. I average 6.2 mpg, best mpg of 8.20 and worst of
4.18 mpg. The 8.2 had a steady tailwind across Wyoming.
BTW, I have a Tcl program that logs miles and prints mpg between stops,
and calculates an overall average, total gas usage, total miles, etc,
if anyone is interested.

Ken: Sounds about normal. I have a Ford bubble-top camper van with a
460, and a 27' Class A GM 454 - both average 8 to 8 1/2 mpg. Only real
difference; I drive the motorhome a bit slower.

I have a 93 Tioga Montara (29 ft) with the 460 and the 4speed OD
transmission. It typically averages about 9 mpg, with as little as the
high 7s and as much as the high 10s, depending on conditions. I usually
run about 60 mph and don't pull anything.

I have a '86 El Dorado (21') with the 460. I also get around 6-7 mpg.
I don't tow anything, but I do most of the driving in hilly terrain.
Not only that, but my engine is carbureted (is yours fuel injected ?)
and I only have a 3-speed automatic tranny, rather than a 4-spd with
overdrive. My friend has a 27' Tioga '91, and he claims he gets 10 mpg
from his 460. But he has Fuel injection and overdrive.
Red
Owned a 94 Tioga Montara 29Z with the 460 EFI.
Got a low of 7.5mpg crossing KS and WY in a head wind and the high of 10.6
with a tailwind in WY. the average was around 9.6mpg. I wasn't towing
anything and used OD when possible (in CO that isn't very often).
New 96 Southwind 34L has the same engine, but the weight of the MH
brought the mileage down to 7.4 with a mix of towing and nontowing.
Expected, since the weight is much higher. Added the Jardine exhaust and
mileage went up slightly to 8mpg but the biggest difference is I can leave it
in OD even in CO. When we slow down the mileage does go up, unfortunately
we're the young crowd with very little time to get there, but we get there.

One other thing that I heard at an MX race recently was from a guy who
claimed that he also got around 7 mpg until he installed a twin exhaust
system with twin catalytic converters, he claimed an immediate
improvement of 2mpg with this mod. This does sound a bit fanciful, do any
of you guys have any knowledge that would support or squash that idea?

Ken Carroll.

Ken,
I have a 1986 28ft C class with a 460 and on the US gallon (I'm
Canadian) I get an average of 9 mpg and in Canada it has been as high
as 11.3 mpg. I tow a Honda Civic. I found that if I drive at 55 mph I
get this mileage, if I increase my speed to 57 mph,my mileage drops. I
also use only synthetic oil (Syntec) it is more expensive but well
worth the money. We travel to Florida in the winter, so we are going
from one extreme temperature to the other (from Nova Scotia) so I use
5W50. I also have my ignition wires and cap checked regularly. Good
belts on the engine are a must, and a clean engine and exterior of
your motorhome all helps. I love my 460.

I don't know about the mileage but if the new GM trucks are any
indication, you can't go wrong with a less restrictive exhaust system..
They have increased muffler size by a factor of about 3 in the last few
yearsand I think the 350 and 454 both have 3" exhaust pipes.

Time is the best teacher. Unfortunately it kills all its students!
Our 1995 460 FI averages about 8 at 70 MPH.
We can increase this to 9.5 at 55 MPH, and when trolling at 55 MPH
without the A/C, go to 10 MPG.
Speed is probably the most important factor in MPG.

I used to have a 25' Concord with a Ford 390 and I usually got 7 or 8 MPG (
unless I was hauling a big trailer into a stiff wind)
Now I have a GMC 4905 bus with a DD 8V71 and I get about 7 MPG but with 3
times the gross weight.

I had a Ford 460 and had dual exhausts on it. The truck ran at 8mpg
(give or take a couple of 10th's) with or without the trailer. I pulled
a 40' 5th whell for the life of the truck (287,000 miles).

I too have a 460 EFI in my 40' 1992 Bounder. My MPG average around 5.5
pulling a Honda Accord on a dolly. Driving speeds on the interstates are
60-65. I am interested in hearing more about your Tcl program.

Ken, I believe what you are seeing is normal for the spped you drive
and, very importantly, for the model year of your MH. You don't say,
but I believe the 87 ws w/o EOD. My experience with a 1993 SeaBreeze on
a F53 chassis with actual weight of about 15K pounds is that I typically
get 8.2-8.5 towing a Geo Tracker (wieght 2360). Either I'm luckyer
than most or For has done better in recent years.
