I searched through the NY State DOT web site and could not find anything.

Nope. Passenger cars and vans only.

Hey, Carl --
Welcome back, BTW. Enjoyed reading about your trip.
>Nope. Passenger cars and vans only.
Do you know for sure if "vans" would include a 19' Class B?

Thanks. Made it back a week ago today - am wondering for how long I'll be
able to stay away from the open road. Best estimate is less than a month.

Don't know for sure, but have been on the Taconic with my 17' van without
problems and recall seeing Ford Econoline 350s - which are quite a bit
longer than my E-150.

It probably depends. The New York parkways have very tight restrictions on
which vehicles may use them, with passenger cars being the only vehicles
generally permitted. If the Class B motorhome has a passenger plate, then it
*may* be permitted. However, if it has some form of motorhome plate, then it
could very well be a somewhat expensive experiment to drive on a parkway. (Of
course, one could always claim that he just wanted to "yank the chain" of the
police officer . . . . )

t=219&cat=220&content=main provides some interesting information:
Q: "Can I drive my pick-up truck on a parkway in New York State?"
A: "In addition to the New York State Department of Transportation, other
agencies (Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the
Palisades Interstate Parkway Commission, for example) or entities (such as
Westchester County and New York City) have jurisdiction over parkways in New
York State.
"Different parkways have different vehicle restrictions. New York State law
prohibits trucks from those parkways that are under the jurisdiction of NYSDOT;
these include the Cross County, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River, Sprain Brook
and Taconic State Parkways.
"In New York State, a 'truck' is defined as a motor vehicle that is designed,
used or maintained primarily to transport property. A truck or a van that is
legally registered as a passenger vehicle and that has passenger plates (tags),
however, is not considered to be a truck.
"Motor vehicle owners in New York State register their vehicles with the
Department of Motor Vehicles, not the Department of Transportation."

Now this is what I call really helpful advice. <g>
I ask -- in a post specifically addressed to Carl -- "Do you know for
sure..." (note my last two words there) and <djos...@aol.commnet.net>
chimes in with "It probably depends."
Very helpful, <djos...@aol.commnet.net>. Now I know "for sure."
Sheesh.

My response included far more than the three words quoted above. In addition
to a detailed explanation of the, "It probably depends," statement, I also
included the URL for (and a detailed quotation from) a New York State Parkway
information site.
Since he left out most of my response (without bothering to indicate that it
was only a partial quotation), and then complained because the small portion he
did quote wasn't helpful enough to suit his tastes, he has nicely illustrated
truth of the statement that, "A half-truth is a whole lie."
Sheesh, indeed!
And how does NY state define a motorhome? So what happens if you are
apprehended on the Taconic in a Class A with non-truck plates? In MD motorhome
plates carry no designation. Where are the lawyers in the group when you need
them??
Either in Europe on vacation or waiting for someone to send them a fee to
answer this one.
Mark - not a lawyer.
No problem send 200 bucks and your covered for the next hour.

Such a deal. I'm faxing $200 in one dollar bills (unmarked of course,
non-sequential serial numbers)...
Mark - who feels safer already.
You don't understand faxing is only done if you want your legal fees
refunded.

Trust me, donlt take an RV there... I used to drive it in a mid size Mercedes
and I felt my car was too big for that road.

They have changed the laws here just a tad. Pick-up trucks can now be
registered as passenger vehicles if they weigh under 5,000lbs they can get a
passenger plate now. The registration must say no more than 4,999lbs.
You can't travel it with a RV of any type that I am aware of. I couldn't even
use it when we were towing the pop-up.
A van can travel the Taconic if it has passenger plates on it. I drove my
conversion van on it all the time. I now drive a Suburban with no problems.
Do watch out around bends and hills. There have been a number of cars that
have been going in the wrong direction and lane recently. Too many people from
out of the area can't read road signs or road markings.
Just watch the State Police here in Dutchess County, they will stop you if you
don't belong on the Taconic. They have a sub-station right at the I-84 -Taconic
interchange. There are a few traps they do regularly to catch speeders and
trucks that got on the parkway by mistake.
Look out around Carpenter Road, Todd Hill Road, by Rt. 44 in Pleasant Valley
and sometimes around the Baird Park areas they lay in wait for speeders.
