The Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform bill is scheduled for a vote on
Wednesday, February 13. In addition to banning soft money, the bill
strengthens other campaign finance laws making it more difficult for special
interest to hide behind sham issue ads and skew the political climate during
elections.
Senator McCain wants you to know that those who oppose reform are determined
to stop the Shays-Meehan legislation, amend it to death or replace it with a
bogus alternative - the Ney Bill. But, we are not going to miss this
historic opportunity for change. Please help us by using your email and
faxes to get the message to some wavering members that now is the time or
courage. It's time for the House of Representatives to put the country’s
interest ahead of their own political interest.
Below are a list of House Members that need to hear that we need their
support on both passage of Shays-Meehan and fending off poison pill
amendments. Please phone or fax each one with that message. Thanks for
your continued support and commitment.

seem to be biased towards Liberals, yet when some Liberals look at the

be that the parts of these things that irritate become greater in our

Excellent point, however..
I recently heard an interview with an author about his book on the
media. His point was that the major media is more liberal then
conservative.
BUT
What they are, above is, is EGO DRIVEN. When it comes to a story, that
will give them air-time/head-lines/etc, they don't care -who- they are
feeding off. Look at the feeding frenzy during the various Clinton
scandals, or Congressmen Condut, or...
His next point is, they don't think they are liberal, they think they
are moderate, because they have similar views to all their friends.
His final point is, the owners don't -care- about agenda, being good
business people all they care about is PROFIT.
Remember when CNN was the conservative darling? Now that they are more
worried about profit then agenda, well...
While Fox is trying to carve out a market by catering to the
conservatives, of course if they don't make enough money, they will drop
that it
Remember, the primary drives of the Media is EGO and PROFIT

Speaking of the press...........
1. The Wall Street Journal is read by the people who run the
country.
2. The New York Times is read by people who think they run
the country.
3. The Washington Post is read by people who think they should
run the country.
4. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the
country but don't really understand the Washington Post. They do,
however, like their smog statistics shown in pie charts.
5. The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't mind
running the country, if they could spare the time, and if they
didn't have to leave L.A. to do it.
6. The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run the
country and they did a far superior job of it, thank you very much.
7. The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't too sure
who's running the country, and don't really care as long as they can
get a seat on the train.
8. The New York Post is read by people who don't care who's
running the country either, as long as they do something really
scandalous, preferably while intoxicated.
9. The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who aren't sure
there is a country, or that anyone is running it; but whoever
it is, they oppose all that they stand for. There are occasional exceptions
if the leaders are handicapped, minority, feministic, atheist dwarfs,
who also happen to be illegal aliens from ANY country or galaxy as long as
they are Democrats.
10. The Miami Herald is read by people who are running another
country, but need the baseball scores.
No. Studies have shown that the major media do, in fact, lean left. If
you can show me some studies that indicate that the major media lean
right, or even truck down the middle, I'll show you mine. I'm tired of
doing all the work, and all I've found in the past is simple denial of a
left lean by those of the left.

The trouble with that synopsis is that 1- the only thing that
"neutered" Clinton was Monica gate- which IMHO was much ado about
nothing- the things that really *could* have been impeachable offenses
were never brought up, simply because the GOP has enough skeletons in
the closet to preclude it (the China connection among other things)-
and as far as Hillary's health care plan- I don't know if you've
checked lately, but due to *any* initiative being squashed by the GOP,
health care is in dire straights in this country.
>The Democrats will live for years with the scars of supporting

I have a premonition that in another couple of years, the GOP
will be living with scars for supporting junior. The Enron thing is
not going to go away- the fallout from that is going to be people
realizing that big business *doesn't* have our best interests in mind,
and doesn't really care about anything but making money- clean or
dirty.
The second GOP scar is going to come from Dad whispering in
Jr's ear "Get that SOB Sadam- he cost me the election"- and Jr getting
us embroiled in an escalation of our Orwellian war- with no
provocation other than they are an "axis of evil".
I truly pray I am wrong, but the rhetoric out of the White
House is getting increasingly scary (plus the fact that the best,
IMHO, person the WH has- Powell- is apparently persona non grata now).

Of course, Pete. We HAVE to blame it on someone. <G> Besides, how much
fun could we have if all we ever talk about is RVs and how much we love
one another?
Lon, who is going to miss the fun for a few days.
You might want to reevaluate that one. Here are some things Gore said
yesterday:
On "the axis of evil":
----------------------------------------
Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Gore embraced
President Bush's controversial description of Iraq, Iran and North Korea
as an "axis of evil."
----------------------------------------
"embraced"
On Iraq in particular:
---------------------------------------------
The United States must deal with the threat of Iraq "on our terms," he
said.
That means U.S. strategy must be mindful of the survival of Pakistan's
leader, avoid an escalation of Middle East violence and protect the
security and interest of allies like Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Gulf
states.
Gore said that once a strategy for Iraq is developed, "we must be
prepared to go the limit."
----------------------------------------------
That's about what the current administration has been saying since
September, isn't it? Yes. Did we screw around in Afghanistan? No. We
went to "the limit". Do you have doubts that Bush will take Gore's
"advice", and develop a strategy for Iraq, and then go to the limit?
Apparently you don't, since it scares you that Jr will listen to Daddy,
and go to the limit. Does Gore scare you too - when he says the same
thing?
On the war on terrorism:
----------------------------------------------
Gore said a long view of the fight against terror is essential.
----------------------------------------------
Isn't that what Bush told us in Sept, and frequently since then? Not
very original on Gore's part.
On Korea:
---------------------------------------------
He said the United States needs to keep the peace on the Korean
peninsula by being ready for war.
He said that in the 1990s, the Clinton administration showed "that a
creative, sustained program could help move the North Korean regime in
new directions."
--------------------------------------------
"ready for war"
Well...yeah. Novel idea, Al.
Here's the article:
http://www.nandotimes.com/nation/v-text/story/250148p-2357210c.html
Except for a few lefthanded swipes, most of the article could have been
about Bush, whom you affectionately know as Jr - instead of about Gore,
whom I affectionately know as The Guy Who Will Say Anything That Fits
His Personal Agenda.

Hi Bob, I haven't read the book and don't plan on it, I've heard the spin
from both
sides and I think it's a lot to do about nothing. Everybody has some kind of
bias,
well maybe except you. BUT, since you have read the book, maybe you could
answer this, did Goldberg make any claims that Dan Rather allowed his own
political bias to influence his newscasts? Not a trick question. Any
specific
examples of this in his book?
Deano
Great point, I've heard recently that FOX News is experiencing some
financial problems now. Don't know how that will translate on the air
but perhaps some of their more recent anchor additions validates the
point you make. Rivera, Greta, etc.
Deano
Ralph didn't say that Gates was a "good" republican like you. ((:-)
Deano
Maybe you didn't read the very bottom of this rant, this isn't Freddy.
Another
false charge from the right.
Deano
I couldn't have said it better. In fact, I tried and missed.
Lon
Chris,
Your liberal leanings are showing again. They aren't becoming to many of
us.
Lon
I do not remember any specifics re Rather and don't know if I want to take
the time to look them up, except there is one point in the book where Dan is
asked what he thinks of the NY Times political leanings. His response was
that "It's middle of the road."
However, I think I have figured out that he has devoted so much energy
to the rv business that he is a complete and utter dunce on political
issues.
As exhibit A, I present:
> 1- the only thing that

Ask Terry McCauliffe. He said that making big money (in his case

You probably scare easy. Powell was appointed by the President. He
either follows the President's lead or he is gone. Just like MacArthur.
He gets paid to implement policy, not make it. He can advise and
suggest, not dictate.

You're right, I didn't read to the end since the entire article was a

What specifically did he say that gave you that impression? Or was it
simply that he didn't carry that air of superiority that seems so common
with the right with media types such as O'Reilly and Limbaugh?
By the way, I'm not saying that Rather isn't a liberal anymore than you
can claim that O'Reilly isn't a conservative, but I don't think it makes a
hill of beans difference unless or until they start using thier media outlet
exclusively to promote thier own agenda. Everybody has an opinion,
that's what makes this country great, what would be scarier than hell

Lon, the only person showing their ignorance in this is -you-.
Claiming Bill Gates is a liberal shows that.
You assume he is a liberal because he choices to be philanthropic with
is personal money. While a true liberal is philanthropic with someone
else's money.
You assume that Bill's driving factor is money, it's not. It's
winning, being right and being the dominate player. His money is only a
by-product of this drive.

Well, I suppose Hillary can be blamed for being so hated that
anything she put an effort in to would be stalled by the GOP- with no
effort at compromise.. so, I guess it is her fault.

I suppose that saying the emperor has no clothes is twisting
reality, but... I find it rather amusing and somewhat frightening that
we are in an Orwellian war right now- one with a faceless enemy,
constant dire warnings- each one being on better intelligence than the
one before- "War is Peace".
I heard on <gasp> NPR last night that the largest terrorist
organization in the US is the ELF- domestic terrorists (and let me say
up front that I think they are a bunch of kooks- and they *are*
terrorists- even though they are... left wing...).
But- being home grown, this means that we cannot just look at
"durn furriners" now. Which means that the erosion of our personal
liberties and freedoms will continue- this time under the GOP reign.
But.. as I said before- I truly hope I am wrong.

I gota pass a story allong. The ELF types decided to destroy some tree's
(genetically altered) that they objected to being raised. They went to the
farm and started ripping things up.
Only it appears they couldn't tell the difference between the highbreed
poplars and raspberry canes. I would have thought good "green" people
would clue in that one as thorns and one doesn't.
I guess they were city type "greens", that had never raised any food for
themselves.

You don't seem to grasp the difference between people like

O'Reilly/Limbaugh are ENTERTAINERS. People tune them in to be
entertained, they don't watch them to get news.

C'mon Chris, I didn't mention Clinton, and I hate to see you - of all
people - stooping to the simplistic and transparent tricks that dominate
arguments here.
But since you brought him up:
What do you think Clinton would have done if he had experienced 911 in
the first year of his first term?
Or, Who should have been POTUS - if not Gore - and what would he have
done?
Or, What would you have done if you had been POTUS?
It's easy to criticize and demean the person in the decision hot seat
when your own balls are not on the block, but much harder to present a
reasoned argument for or against decisions when - or as though - you
will have to personally suffer the consequences of a bad - or unpopular
- decision.
And don't forget that Bush got 'popular' Because he made those first
potentially dangerous and risky decisions - he didn't make those
decisions Because he was popular. He used - and continues to use - his
Presidential balls for what Presidential balls should be used for - that
which I think he sincerely thinks is in the best interests of the
country, and not for personal gratification - political or otherwise.

Well- since my tachyon polarizer which enables me to sidestep

But.. if he was doing just what the current POTUS is doing, I would

I have not seen a truly good and qualified candidate make it
out of the starting blocks in quite a while- we have been choosing the
lesser of two evils for some time now- which is why I do believe we
need some sort of campaign finance reform (whether the present bill is
the best one- I don't know- but at least it is something).

But- the decisions are all popular now- we were kicked in the

I disagree with that to some extent- and if Iraq is such an
enemy, why did we *not* deal with them when we had the perfect
opportunity- nothing has changed as far as they are concerned.
I just find it rather amusing that we as a nation are selling
our freedoms out wholesale because of this mess- all for a little
non-existant security- and that the very people who would be howling
the loudest if a Democratic administration was doing exactly the same
thing are defending every decision.
But.. again.. I pray I am wrong about the whole mid-east

I see where the "Axis of Evil" tag has caused Iran to suddenly round up
