285 in Colorado?

Hi Gang,
Plotting my course, have any of you taken 285 from Santa Fe to Salida, CO?
If so, any reason I should avoid it?

part of Colorado and New Mexico, but we used to especially enjoy the
drive through the San Luis Valley. We'd usually detour over to the
Great Sand Dunes for a day and a night. We seemed to inevitably stop
in South Park for a horrible meal no matter which restaurant we
tried...for a while we had a small post-it on the dash of the MH, "No
Food Stops in South Park".
I remember quite a bit of truck traffic along with occasionally heavy
local traffic; but overall a well maintained road that traverses some
varied scenery.

ago, not the most scenic way to get there but nothing remarkable in the
way of steep hills, etc. I do remember a pass a ways south of Salida
but nothing your diesel can't handle very nicely. Also some curves but,
again, nothing remarkable.
Are you planning to take CO 17 from Alamosa north to where it joins 258?
Shorter route.

Passes don't bother me..... as you said that's why I have a big truck....

I'm on the Passport America map and don't even see 17... but my GPS will
take me as the crow flies...
Which I found out day before yesterday when it took me up a gravel
mountain road where I was actually 4 wheel driving to a dead end....
2.5 hours to get where I was going, 20 minutes to get back...
Apparently the GPS thinks I'm a crow.

My mountain directory shows a 7.2 mile downgrade for north bound traffic a
little south of Poncha Springs. Says it is 4%-5% with lots of 45 mph
curves. That is all that is listed on that route.

17 Runs "almost" straight north from Alamosa while 285 detours west for
awhile to get to Del Norte and Saguache then comes back east.

horrible meals we'd had in South Park, my tongue was kind of in my
cheek...We ate the miserable meals in and around Fairplay, which is in
South Park.
There's also a Middle Park and North Park in Colorado...

As mentioned above, Sand Dunes is a good stop - pretty and peaceful. If you are in that area long I would strongly recommend a side trip to the tiny town of San Luis, CO. It is about on hour south east of the dunes and very interesting. There is a mountain side on the edge of town with the stations of the cross depicted in 2/3 to fully life size bronze sculptures. You don't have to be religious to appreciate it. The artist has work in the Vatican as well as several other prominent churches and other buildings. His studio used to be in San Luis.
