My 1987 Bounder has a carburetor. I am not positive but I
have been led to believe that all Bounders on Chevrolet
chassis had fuel injection as of 1989.

Personally, I prefer a carbureted engine cuz I can work on
it with the tools I have on hand.

The last carbureted 454 was 1986. In 1987, they went to (TBI) throttle body
injection.

Light trucks went to FI in 1987, one year before the major redesign of
them.

Motorhome chassis might be different, though.

I've seen an "V 3500" dump body "boxy style" Chevy truck circa 1989 with
a 350 4BBL, so there is a chance that you will find carburetors up until
that point at least.

It was actually 1990 for all 454 applications, including motorhome chassis.
The only way a 1995 motorhome could have a carbureted 454 (as OEM) is if it was
built on a 1989 or earlier chassis.

The generation 5 block was introduced in 1991 and had nothing to do with what
type of fuel system the engine had.

I had a 90 Pace Arrow on an 89 chassis. It had a carburated engine. The 90
chassis had fuel injection.

As I debate what to buy, some of the older quality coaches with gas engines
come to mind. They seemed to have been built better than a lot of the new
"high lines."

I remember getting awful gas mileage with the old Monaco pusher we had,
though. If I do find one in good shape, or restorable, how much trouble &
cost is there to convert the carbureted Chevy 454, say 1986-88 variety, to
fuel injection...either TBI or Vortec? Is this something one should
consider only when the engine needs a major overhaul (or replacement), or
is it feasible otherwise? How about the gear splitter? Is that a better
improvement to do first than to convert the fuel system?

For that matter, what would be the cost to buy a brand new 454 engine with
the Vortec FI? Anybody have any of these answers?

GM performance products has a 502ci engine that is a replacement for older
454's. It was discussed a couple of weeks ago. I CAN'T RECALL THE PRICE.

Not an easy question because the transition from carburetors to
injection did not happen overnight but rather in stages.

I had a 1990 Chevy Blazer that had throttle body injection. One could
argue it was just a carburetor with venturis replaced by two
injectors.

I had a 1998 Suburban that had intake manifold injectors, one for each
intake port.

Now gasoline motors use direct injection, much like a diesel, to
inject the fuel into the combustion chamber.

I would think any chevy dealer would be more than happy to look at it. He should be able to just raise the hood and look. Being a 1990, it could've been changed from what the factory put in it, but a mechanic should be able to tell just by looking a the engine.

More than likely it’s throttle body injection. Sort of a hybrid system.

True, but you never know for sure unless you LOOK and know the difference on something that old.

Also, if he can't look and see, he could have a small block. People like those 454's and it could've been changed out and he has no idea.
