DOes anyone have opinions or comments about Cabela's IM6 and C44X fly rods?
They seem quite inexpensive (especially in the packages with Cabela's reels).
For that matter, any comments on the Cabela's disc-drag reels?

I just received a Cabelas blank in the mail last week. I got the 4 piece
IMS 9' for #10-11. wrapped it up yesterday. I previously had one of their
Fish Eagle I blanks (9'#8) that was OK, but not as fast an action as I like.
I don't think that will be a problem this time. The quality of the IMS
blank appears to be very good, the action is fast and it's definitely stiff
enough for offshore. I think it'll throw a 12 weight real nice (though my
#11 Monocore felt damned nice on it too). Cabelas was the only place I
could find a 4 piece blank for over a 10 weight at a reasonable price. The
IMS was $152. Their IM6 of the same blank was $116 but is out of stock. Ditto
on the CX44. But for a $36 difference ya might as well splurge :-> Next month
I'll take it to Mexico to try it on actual fish (though I may fasten my lab
to it to stretch the line out and get a feel for the rod :-> ), I'll let you
know how it fishes.

I have an IM6 8.5 ft, 5/6 weight outfit which I've been very happy with.
The Cabela's outfit seemed like the best bet for the money and I've never had
any problems. The packages have changed slightly since I bought mine (91?),
so I cannot vouch for the new reels. Mine included the Hemmingway MCD reel
which was almost certainly manufactured by Sth (on the foot of the reel was
a Made in Argentina mark identical to Sth). Highly recommend the rods
and feel that the packages are well balanced.

Yes, I own a 8.5 foot Gary Borger 5-6 weight C44X and love it. Living in
Bozeman, MT it gets fished all year at least twice a week. The rod has a
very fast action and a relatively stiff butt, it works best for nymphing
and very large drys. After using my rod, two friends also purchased Cabela's
rods, A 9 foot 3-4 C44X and a 8 foot 5-6 C44X. I have used both and believe
that they are the best value out there. The Gary Borger line of rods is
no longer offered, but I am just as pleased with the Cabela's line. The
Cabela's line has a different taper than the Borger, making it a little
softer in the butt, and possiblly better all around. To my knowledge the
C44X line is made by Loomis and is the same as those carrying that name,
The IM6 rods are made by St. Croix in Wisconsin and are also good rods.
Another note on the rods, the Cabela's rods are given a two fly line weight
range, and are sent with the lighter line. In my experience the rods
perform substantially better with the heavier line, so choose the rod based
on the heavier line weight and plan on buying a new line.
My rod was sent with the MDD reel, OVERKILL! the drag in my 4-5-6
reel will honestly stop anything short of a tarpon dead in its tracks.
The reel is of good construction and very smooth and quiet. I believe that
the same company that makes STH reels also makes the Cabela's reels. The
reel I have is true disk drag, I believe that the packages come with
the MCD which is a caliper disk drag. The caliper disk drag is sufficient
for all fresh water except mabey steelhead and northern pike. The caliper
drag models are much lighter and balance the rods better.
I recommend the C44X rods if you like the feel of a Winston or
a softer Loomis, and I think they(Cabela's C44X) are more for your money.
You can't go wrong with the reel either, but if you want something with
better finish choose a Lamson or an Abel (at a much higher cost).

Happy Fishing,

Can anyone offer any opinions on comparison between the Cabela's rods
against say Loomis or Sage?

The pricing on the Cabela's rods are definitely very attractive enough to
venture on the building of one.

Regarding Cabala's rods and reels. I bought one of the rods designed by Borger
about 3 years ago with a Hemingway MDD reel. I couldn't recommend any other
combo more highly. I also have a Sage RPL III and I use the Cabela's reel on
it too. I don't think you could buy a better reel at any price. I see in the
new catalog that they have changed the name of the reel but the spools for
the MDD and MCD will fit them. I would tell you that I like the Cabela rod
better than the Sage but they are totally different sizes and styles so any
comparison would be misleading. Suffice it to say that I love the rod just as
much as the Sage, though I love them both!

Good luck, Arlie

FYI - Cabela's fly rods are made from G. Loomis blanks.
