Fishing report

-- LAKE MEAD -- The bad news is that striped bass fishing
continues to be extremely slow, with the fish holding in deep water.
The good news is that they typically become active in March as
they prepare to spawn.
Boaters who are drifting bait in deep water and trolling with
downriggers are catching small numbers of stripers at Las Vegas Wash,
Hemenway Harbor, the Muddy River and Fish Island. Many of those fish
have come from depths of more than 100 feet.
Largemouth bass fishing appears to be improving slightly, with
boaters finding the fish at the 25- to 30-foot level.
Rainbow trout fishing has been good following the Nevada
Division of Wildlife's weekly plants.
-- LAKE MOHAVE -- Boaters continue to cast plugs in the
Cottonwood Cove area as they search for large striped bass. The effort
paid off Saturday for one young angler, who caught a 14 3/4-pound
striper near Cottonwood with an A.C. Plug.
Other big fish that came from the lake last week were a 43
3/4-pound striper from Carp Cove and another that weighed 38 pounds
that was caught north of the narrows above Cottonwood.
There has been some action for largemouth bass, with the fish
being taken with jigs. Rainbow trout fishing should improve at Willow
Beach because it was scheduled to be stocked today by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service.
-- WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- The lakes are free
of ice, and fishing has been fair for rainbow trout at Haymeadow
Reservoir. A rainbow that weighed 4 pounds came from the lake last
week.
-- EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Even though ice covers a third of
the lake, there is ample open water for fishing. The action for trout
was slow last weekend, with anglers catching an average of two fish.
-- ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Runoff from recent storms has turned
the lake's water into a murky brown color. This has resulted in slow
trout fishing at the Lincoln County state park.

"Our eyes and hands and feet will give us the same assistance in doing
mischief as in doing good; but it would not therefore be better for the
world, that all mankind were blind and lame. Arms are not to be laid
aside by honest men, because carried by assassins and ruffians; they are
to be used the rather for this very reason."
