I am putting together a pair of 30# lightweight stand-up outfits
that I will be using for school bluefin, yellowfin and sharks. I
am considering the above mentioned reels but
have no specific experience with either of these models.
I would be interested in comments from those of you that have
used both reels.

Thanks in advance,

Ray

Ray,

I own more Penn's than Shimano's but I think the TLD is a better reel than the
GLS.

If you think you might occasionally hook up with a larger sized fish you might
consider one of the Shimano 2 speeds (either TLD 20 II or TLD 30 II would work
fine for what you describe) ... I have a couple of the 30 II's and they are
excellent light tackle reels for marlin ... caught/released two blue marlin est
at over 300 lbs on 30 # test in Venezuela with the TLD 30 II and low gear
really helped when the fish went deep and sulked.

Having had a lot of stand-up fishing experience with both these reesls on the
long range boats out of San Diego I give my pick to the Shimano.
Reason?......Free-Spool ability. The Shimanos free spool much better than the
Penns making live bait fishing a little more productive since the bait has the
ability to pull the line off the reel. One more thing, IMHO the Shimano drag
is a superior drag.
Best of luck!

I own both, and have caught 100#+ tuna and marlin on both.
I prefer the TLD25. I think the TLD is slightly better in many ways, but
the only significant difference for me is that the lever drag adjustment
is more linear on
the TLD than on the GLS.

Bill is right about the TLD 2 speeds. They look the same
as the single speeds, but they are about twice the reel in terms of the
size of fish they will handle. The drags are better and the low gear can
make a huge difference.

Definitely agree with everyone else, the TLD is a much better reel. I'm
basically a Penn fan
but as far as graphite lever drags are concerned, Shimano is way superior.
Got my first tld
last year, a charter special and a TLD25 this year and they blow my penn
GLSs apart. the shimanos
are precsion instruments and the GLSs are just plain old clunky. I fish the
TLD 25 with 40lb test for just the occasions you are talking about. Charter
special I use for drifting bass. Personally, I think penn doesn't make them
too good for fear of cannabalizing their own international sales. For fifty
lb test and above I will probably always use Internationals though. hope it
helps.

I have used both, spending a decade in the retail tackle business I have
sold hundreds of both....I own and use the TLD25 for 5 years catching blue
marlin, tuna, and wahoo on mine. The Shimano is the superior of the
two...trust me

Shimano drags are a lot smoother, but we buy Penn here as we are far from
service agents and they are so durable, and reliable.

I think the Penns are decent (especially in the 20 pound class) for the money
but don't compare to the shimanos for durability and life....
