Does anyone know the difference between these reels? I have a Penn 49 and
349 that I recently aquired. The 349 seems to be a little beefier around
the reel foot. Both have the same ratio, about 3.25 to 1. Any help would
be appreciated.

The 349 was the top grade of the series, generally (as you noticed)
"beefier" than the others. The 49 was the most commonly used, and was
solid, although not quite as sturdy as the 349. The 149 was the
bargain version. although I don't recall all the details--its been a
couple of decades since I saw a 149--I remember the reel as slower
than the others, and without the second "anti-reverse" lever (I don't
recall what Penn called it, but that was it's function) that the 349
and 49 featured in addition to the free spool.

In article <7lbnkt$j4$1...@nntp4.atl.mindspring.net>,

The 1989 Penn parts catalog lists 4 variations of the Mariner. 349H,
49L, 49 & 149L.

The 349H had a line capacity of 350/30# Dacron and the other 3 had
capacities of 300/30# Dacron. Gear ratio on the 349H was 3.25-1, 3.5-1
on the 49's and 2.1-1 on the 149L. The 49L weighed 30 oz and the 49
weighed 29 oz.

The 349H came standard with the convertible handle with counter
balanced handles on the others. 349 also had harness lugs.

Although it is not explicitly stated, from the diagrams it appears that
only the 49L had the "optional anti reverse" lever.

Okay......let me see if I can shed more light on this subject........to start
off with.....the size of drag washers in the 3 reel models are different. The
349 uses a drag slightly larger than a 114HL ( 6/0 ).
Depending on which model 349 you have there are differences there too. There
are the black sideplate, 2 clicker versions that use bushings........there is
also a red side plate single clicker model that uses ball bearings.......The
349 is a highly sought after reel among Southern California's long range
fishermen. Once the 349 is re-fitted with the Newell Wahoo conversion kit (No
longer available from Newell ) you have a reel that has a faster gear ratio and
larger drags than the 114HL......Mine is often used to fish 50 or 60 pound. I
have completely re-done mine with Smoooooth Drag drag washers and a one-piece
frame from Accurate. This is one tough reel!!
Hope this helps.
Mike
