Any advice for the Outer Banks?

Family vacation this year is in Nags Head, NC (I am told)...

Outer banks!!
So of course I am packing my surf rods but would also like
to get out into the gulf stream... any advice?

I see the oregon inlet fishing charter website...But thats about all I have
seen... Seems like EVERY charter runs through them? Wondering if I need
to make some reservations or show up at the docks with some cash in hand
and see who is not working? I've done that in the past in other
fishing towns and have succesfully had great days of fishing for less
money...

I also need to gather some info on surf fishing there as well...
Places/areas/rigs/bait/techniques????

I've done some surf fishing in Chincoteague,VA but I'm thinking this might
be a little different...

Any and help is greatly appreciated!!!

I can't help with the Outer Banks, but I'd be interested in any info you have on
Chincoteague. I'll be going up for a couple days while the kids are there in
July. TIA!

We have fished the Outer Banks for years. You can also get charters from
Pirates Cove on Roanoke Island. I cannot advise you as to whether
reservations are required. For surf fishing the most popular place is the
point at Cape Hatteras, but it is usually mobbed. Essentially any other
place along the ocean will be good if the fish are there and bad if they are
not. Perhaps the most common rig is a double bottom rig with cut bait. My
favorite bait is menhaden (bunker) but people have good luck with shrimp,
bloodworms, and mullet too. Lures work for blues and trout but it can get
tiring casting and reeling in for hours. Go to a bait and tackle shop and
ask for advice - you'll get an earful. It can also be fun fishing off the
bridges. My favorite bait shops are Frank and Frans in Avon and Red Drum and
Dillons (2 places) in Buxton - a bit south of Nags Head though. Be sure to
try Sam and Omie's restaurant! If you have 4WD and will be driving on the
beach be sure to lower the pressure to 18-20 lbs. I am not sure however if
beach driving is permitted during the high season - we usually go in the off
season.

I found Pirates Cove to be $25 a day higher than Oregon Inlet....$1375 vs
$1350 per day...
But I like Pirates Cove web site availibility program better..

Getting close, Im excited..
Nearly went to Chincoteague,Va this weekend to fish..
maybe next weekend..

If you go to Pirates Cove, I can recommend First Crack. We went out last
summer and caught a sailfish and a mess of dolphin as well as having nice
fights with a marlin and a tuna that got off.
