The other option in my price range would be the Daiwa Jupiter Z
series, which only cost a few dollars more.
Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!
I had one of the Quantum that you are talking about. It was extremely poor
quality. I would have to agree with the Shimano suggestion. Goode Advice

Thanks a lot, guys! Looks like you're saving me both a lot of bucks and a
lot of hassle.
The Navarre Beach pier (right near the condo where we will likely return!)
has a lot of king mackerel
action at the time of year we would tend to go. Most of the anglers were
using 20 lb line or
better--lots of fish were landed in the 20 to 40 lb range. My wife never,
ever wanted to
fish with me, anywhere at all, until she saw those folks landing such big
fish so often, and then
she said she wanted a rod and reel to do that!
From what I've seen of the "low cost Shimanos", none of them can carry much
20 lb line. I have an
older Symmetre 3000 (same spool as the newer 4000's) and I like it very
much--the drag has always
been very smooth and reliable when playing Lake Michigan steelhead in the
15-17 lb range, but it
holds just 200 yds of 10 lb line. The new Slade 6000 can only spool 120 yds
of 20 lb test, according
to the Shimano site...........and I would like to stay under $50 per reel,
as I need to buy two.
That's why the Daiwa Jupiter Z's looked like a good alternative....if we
really need to be casting
20 or 25 lb test line.
What size reel and what test line do most folks use if they are targeting
kings from a pier? Were
the folks we saw "over-rigged"?

Not sure about the reels that you mentioned, but when I was fishing
for kings from a pier 30 years ago, my hot set up was a penn squidder
spooled with 20 lb. Ande on a 10 foot hatteras surf rod. We were using
8 ounce pyramid sinkers for an anchor and running a tied off sliding
leader with live bait. I don't really recall how much line it held,
but I was never spooled with it, although I do recall someone else
getting spooled on one when he had a big shark on. The other popular
choices were high speed 3/0 and 4/0 Penns, and then the odd 6/0 or two
that would show up for the fall season when you had heavy fish.
