I'm going to be back in the US for 5 weeks this summer, and will be
doing a drive from Maine to Indianapolis, back through DC, then back
to Maine during that time. If anyone wants to get together and fish
for a day or so, I'm way up for it.

My schedule is this:
Arrive in Maine on July 3.
Drive to IND, in time for a conference from July 8-12
Drive IND-DC on July 13
Return to Maine for the rest of the summer
Fly back to HK on Aug 8.

It would be fun to get together in Maine with any Maynahs, or meet up
with any roffians between Maine and Indiana, Indiana and DC, or DC and
Maine while driving through. My travel dates are flexible (just not
the week I need to be in Indiana, and my flight arrival and departure
dates).

Anyone interested, email me or post here.

And are there any fishing opps in or around Indianapolis?

Of course, I got the dates wrong by a day.

Arrive in Maine on July 2.
Drive to IND, in time for a conference from July 7-11
Drive IND-DC on July 12
DC-Maine around July 15

Maine for the rest of the summer

Fly back to HK on Aug 7.

No, damnitall, and I regret it already. I had a non-negotiable for
early summer (a wedding in the middle east), and the rest of the
summer was wide open after that. My heart was into the idea of
spending a solid amount of time in Scandanavia (man, I LOVE it up
there in the summer), then coming back to HK for another Mongolia
trip, then back to school. But the Mongolia trip evaporated (too few
participants this year), and then I had to find a place to get some
professional training, and it turned out to be in the US. I could have
changed that, but I kept imagining the angst of spending a whole month
wandering alone around Sweden and only being able to hook up with you
guys on the weekends, so at the last minute, I booked tickets to the
US, paid for the conference, and made my final plans to spend a month
wandering around Maine with my canoe and fly rod instead.

The very next frigging day, I hear from Roger that he has 6 weeks
vacation, and it turns out that it would have been a sweet summer
after all, with a travel partner and fishing galore, etc. But its too
late to cancel the tickets and change my plans now. So I'm stuck with
lots of 'what-ifs'. :-(

Even when we have complete control of our plans, we don't always have
control of them.

Pity! My summer was looking iffy because Åsa and I have bought a new
house - so we have to move, sell and clean the existing place, sort all
that crap out with the bank blah blah. But the house sold quick and we
will move late June so summer is looking better already..... The new
house is big and right next (literally) to a good fishing rapid on
Vindelälven (so Roger tells me anyway). I was thinking it would be a
nice place for you to idle between more extensive trips.

Next year maybe. You are always welcome to a spare room.

cheers

myron,
when you're heading from DC up to Maine, I might be able to share some
fishing over a decent Trico hatch up this way. Get in touch with me.

I should be in DC when you're coming through. Ping me here as we
get closer; maybe we can target smallmouth in the N. Fork of the
Shenandoah or some trout a bit west of there. If time is a
constraint, might find some smallmouth closer in on the Potomac.

Hey Dude,

On one of those legs you will be within 12 minutes of my houses. I've got
two and one's for guests if you need a rack and a burger and a beer.

I'm in Dayton Ohio..are you going to have room and weight in your luggage
for some mags? If not, I'll mail 'em....

I used to fish the White River near a campground just north
of Indianapolis. It's a pretty nice smallmouth stream there.
I was there for the Grateful Dead at Deer Creek Music Center
so fishing wasn't top priority and I haven't had an Indiana
license since.

I live two hours west of Indy and there are fishing opportunities
around here but by July the lakes fish better for largemouth than
the streams for smallmouth.

Give me a call when you're around and we'll find something to
cast to.

Here, here. read my mind. Tricos should be prime by then. Count me in
as long as it's after July 13th (will be enjoying Cicada Madness on Penn's
that week). Actually the weekend after may be perfect for a Trico jaunt,
I'll need a fix by then. .

Wow, it sure does! Why don't you guys all send me an email with phone
numbers, and I'll get in touch nearer to the time. For the week that
I'm in Indy, I'll be free every night after the sessions (from around
4pm onwards) and willing to make little jaunts anywhere, for fishing
or cameradie. As for the other legs (to DC, then to Maine), I'm fair
game to adjust my timing around trips.

Save the postage, Asadi. I think I can arrange to be in Dayton on
Sunday the 6th, since its just outside of Indy, or else on Saturday
the 12th while I'm on my way to DC. Any fishing around there? We can
possibly do a Sat/Sun thing the weekend of the 12th, if you're free.

Hmm, the weekend of the 19th might be a few days late. Tom and Mike,
where do you guys live? I'll be in DC probably only for 2-3 days, but
I might be able to find other things I can do to fill the week. Any
chance of getting together mid-week; maybe around the 16-18th?

Got the email with the cell number.

The only campground I know in the area is on the White River and
called appropriately enough White River Campground.

http://www.co.hamilton.in.us/parks_details.asp?id=2933

It's a county park of Hamilton County, Indiana. It's a nice enough
place and when I camped there years ago you could catch smallies
within easy walking distance of your campsite (between aluminum
hatches). One thing that's changed is that there is now a No
Alcoholic Beverages rule. I know damn good and well that rule
wasn't in effect when the Grateful Dead were following me around.

Bottom line: I don't know of a suitable place near Indy anymore.

I'll take a drive over to Turkey Run State Park and check out the
campsites. Turkey Run is just about equidistant from my house and
Indy. I've been there several times but never camped because it's
so close to the house.

Sorry to respond late, I just got back from five days in the Smoky
Mtns, a trip I dearly needed for sanity's sake. As Mr. Reid hinted, I
live in Indianapolis and would enjoy getting together while you're
here. You can use my house if you need to also.

There is a tailwater a little over an hour east of Indianapolis
towards the Ohio border plus the Mad River is 2½ - 3 hours away from
Indy and about an hour from John's Driveway. Plus we have some small
mouth water that's decent enough between me and Kenny and the White
River he mentions. I am six hours from the banks of the Ausable and
six hours from the

Yah, rub it in, why don't you? I shoulda been there too.

So details, man ... we want details ... make me totally miserable. :-)

SO did the weather pan out OK? The only saving grace I could see
about me having to cancel my trip was that the weather looked like it
was going to be pretty bad last week.

Hey Wayne:
Sounds good. I have accommodation all lined up, but I'll be done my
seminar each day by late afternoon, and I'm always up for a beer or a
evening trip to cast some flies somewhere. I'll have a rentacar with
me, so I'm mobile. Maybe we can get a group of folks together later in
the week.

Send me your contact info in Indy, and I'll get in touch before I
arrive.

Not so much to report. The weather was wet until Late Sat morning when
the sun came out finally. I would think it would have been none too
pleasant even in a good tent. No real downpours or much thunder but a
constant steady rain and it got cool at times too. Especially on
Friday when I walked up high and there was a cloud/mist line I walked
into, brrrrr. Then after pulling the fleece and raincoat out of the
day pack and fishing what should have been brookie water, I caught
several rainbows and only one brookie.

Correspondingly the fishing got better Sat afternoon too. Until then
it was tough going, even in the brookie waters though some fish were
caught every day. Fished Parson's, Abrahams, a couple of Prongs of the
Little River, and a few other esoteric creeks just trying to find
something happening.

See ya next year I hope.

I was reading another forum about fishing in that area, and someone
else reported a similar experience (finding rainbows up higher than
expected). I wonder if that's the result of the low water of last year
(fish moving up high).

I think I could have survived the weather OK. My camping setup is
pretty much waterproof (right, Wolf and Jeffie?), but it could have
gotten old after the first 3 or 4 days.

What, no Hazel? :-) Sounds like fun anyway. Even with bad
weather, I really missed the trip.

Besides the Little and maybe Bradley Fork on the NC side, I had
planned to spend some time on Lynn Camp, as I really fell in love with
that stream last year (my first GSMNP brookies were caught there), and
they are going to be shutting it down as a restoration project after a
"fish out" later this year.

And of course, if last year was any indication, I could have counted
on catching the biggest fish of the trip right within sight of my tent
in Elkmont. On a Pass Lake. :-)

> See ya next year I hope.

I hope so, too. I already have it penciled in on my schedule. Two
weekends before Memorial Day.
