I know a guy in Lousiana who might will make you one, and customize it for
you. He's a welder and makes boats on a as wanted basis. For full
disclosure, he is also my uncle.

unfortunately, no one builds a jon boat without the little
bench seats inside. obviously, this means that it is impossible to
build casting decks over the top of them, since no one has ever done
that or ever even thought of doing that.
why don't you call somebody near you that offers jon boats for
sale and ask them the same question? or did someone here give you the
impression that they were jon boat builders/customizers?

Go to Norkolk. Ask for a Jon boat. They'll tell you it's anything
leaving port with a load of sailors. :-)
Look up cataraft or other real casting deck floaters. A Jon boat is
worthless for this purpose.

I'm not a naval architect, but it's very possible that the stock seats in
these little boats provide some of the structural stiffness and stability of
the hull. That being the case, I doubt anyone who values their liability
insurance would sell you one without them.
Quite honestly, I don't understand why you simply can't build your custom
stuff over top of or alongside the stock stuff. I'd assume you want the
casting platform level with the gunwales (gunwhales), but the seats are
below that. Just cover 'em & use 'em for supports. Gotta be cheaper
than a custom hull.

I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but we sure do like 'em, and as
requested, no seats or anything inside, all ready to build the boat of your
dreams....
Just add a small block Chevy marine setup - you'll need to design or rig a mount
- I suggest JB Weld'ing in the front rails and motor mounts from a 75 Camaro;
call Bubba at Bubba's Salvage, he's in the book - run the prop shaft through the
pre-formed hole, attach the prop, and yeeeeehaaaa!
And as I have helped so much, would you be kind enough to send a video of the
"launching".....

BTW, for them what cares, "Chevalier's Pirogues" is how you find "Knight's Jon

My guess is that the seats help stiffen the
sides of the hull.
One of the saltwater fly fishing magazines
this month has an article by someone who
modified a small Lund for fly fishing. You
may want to take a look at it for some ideas.

Both Lowe and Alumacraft make very good Jon boats without the middle
seat. Bob Stearns wrote an excellent article on the subject in the
June/July 1998 issue of Saltwater Fly Fishing. For a good set of

Also ask for the decription of how he modifies ice coolers for
seating.
Sometimes dealers don't stock the ones without seats but they are
available as special order items. I'm thinking you are talking about
a larger boat - say 16 feet. I haven't looked into the options
available on the little car-topper models.
