Does anyone fish the Nipigon near Thunder Bay Ontario anymore? The world
record brook trout was caught on this river. Is the river still fishable
or has it become over developed?

I have often asked the same question. If my memory is correct,
the angler was Dr. W.J. Cook, the fish was 14 lb. 8oz., caught
about 80-90 years ago. If the fishery is still viable, it should
contain great big fish genes.

Yes! Thousands of people fish the river each year.

That is true. 14 lbs 6 ounces caught from the Rabbit Rapids in
1916. Unfortunately, the Rabbit Rapids no longer exist, having
been inundated by a power development. There are yet many miles
of excellent river still available, though.

Oops, no make that -- the river sucks and is a stinking cesspool
and you all should probably best stay as far away from it as is
humanly possible lest ye live to regret your actions... ;-)

Absolutely, the river is fishable, and relatively undeveloped.
The major stressor on the river has been water level changes
associated with hydro-electricity production but this has
recently been alleviated somewhat by agreements on when and how
levels should be manipulated.

I have fished Lake Nipigon many times, not the river. Has nice brookies
(specs to Canadians) with good size. If you're there in early spring,
drive on to Steel River for steelhead run.
