Hello fellow fly fisher folk.......

Can anyone advise whether nail polish/varnish makes for suitable head cement.

My local tackle shop sells head cement for five times the price of a
bottle of nail varnish (AND nail varnish comes in so many colours - five
colours for the cost of one bottle of head cement).

Is there a strength difference?
Any and all opinions welcome................. cheers.......

For some years now I have been using Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails
brand fingernail polish in place of standard head cement, and find
it to be superior to any head cement I have used. For best results
I keep it thinned to the consistency I prefer with Acetone. Most
standard fingernail polishes, however do not work very well as head
cement substitute as they do not seem to form a good seal with the
thread.

I use Sally's on my epoxy flies, but for general tying use I prefer superglue to
head cement. Are fingernail polishes water resistent ?

I use Sally Hanson, Hard As Nails, nail polish for all my heads and it works great. I have never tried using a commercial head cement
so I can't recommend to use one or not. Definetely more expensive though!

Fingernail polish is water resistent. Unfortunately, superglue is not.
I've found though that it certainly will hold long enough to allow me
to lose the fly.

I have always used nail polish, and never had any problems. I use
different colors to identify various weights of nymphs.

I just recently discovered the ORVIS Store in Houston (about 3 hrs away).

Until then I had to tie with whatever I could find and the first thing I
found was nail polish. It's been working for years and I always lose the
fly before it comes apart. Maybe I should work more on my casting.

Several years ago, I tried Gudebrod rod varnish when I left the
flexament open and ruined it, and stuck with it. It doesn't stink, cleans
up with water, and works fine. My flies stopped falling apart (mostly)
when I got better at finishing the heads. The cement may not be that
important. Some pretty good tyers, including Art Flick and James
Leisenring, didn't use it. -- Roger Wiggin

another good use for Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails is to coat your
beadheads. the brush makes it real easy and it keeps the beads from
getting dull.

I never had a problem using nail polish. I used it as a lacquer for wing
cases. As far as head cement. as long as you use a good wip finish, who
needs any cement ????

I've tried many different head cements and I always go back to Hard as
Nails. Another "non fly shop" product I use from time to time is called
"Dritz Fray Check". You can buy it at fabric stores. They sell to keep
fabric hems and seams from fraying -- also works for tying thread.

Hey Roger,

Hey flytier1,
Perhaps you should re-read my post... No implication that your flies
fall apart or that your leader detaches. The fact is that superglue is
not water resistant. The other fact is that the fly will certainly
last long enough for me, get it, "me" to lose the fly. Simply my way
of saying that I've never seen one come apart.
I've used superglue for years and you're right, it must be used
sparingly.
So... no slur intended to either your flies or your leaders. The guy
asked a question, I gave an answer.

Watch the superglue! Last month I decided to tie one more Wooly Bugger
before picking up my daughter at school. I had to go meet her with a #8
Brown Bugger cemented between my left thumb and index finger, trying the
whole time to look nonchalant in front of the mothers there to pick up
their kids, difficult driving with also. D.Lowe

To remove superglue, simply use nail polish remover, acetone (sp) based,
it works every time, I build models of sailing ships and often manage to
glue the rigging to my fingers. I use nail polish on my flies though works
better for me.

I use Sally Hansons Hard As Nail #300 clear pearlescent with holographic glitter.
It's Awesome.
