SUBJECT: # 18716: Caught cheating red-handed.....
Submitted by Geoff M from GEORGIA on 5/15/2001 7:40:00 PM
Below is a notice about a pair of cheaters that were caught last night
at a popular night tournament (95 boats last night) that is held on
Lake Allatoona, just north of Atlanta, Georgia.
=============================
I’m both sad and happy to announce that at this past Monday night’s
tournament (5/14/01), we discovered a pair of CHEATERS .... Waymond
Hix and his son Russell. The team was immediately disqualified from
that night’s competition and barred from all future events.
Below are the events that led to their discovery ......
During the previous week the elder Mr. Hix was observed placing bass
into a holding basket under his dock that was accessed through a
concealed trap door in the floor. Upon inspection it was discovered
that the basket held 6 bass and a decision was made to identify the
fish in the event that they were presented for weigh-in at the next
tournament .... each fish had a hole placed in it’s dorsal fin with a
hole punch.
Then on the night of the tournament, the tournament director and an
observer staked out the dock armed with night vision binoculars. At
approximately 9:30 pm the pair were observed approaching their dock,
but gave every indication that they were “just fishing” the area and
continued this charade until around 10:15 pm when they were about 50
yards from the dock, at which time they proceeded to reverse course
and approach the dock with all of their lights turned off.
Once they were alongside, the elder Hix held the boat in place and one
livewell lid open while the son was observed removing 4 fish from the
hidden compartment in the dock and placing them in their boats
livewell. The first fish was placed in the livewell at exactly 10:21
pm. Then they slowly idled away.
At that time the County Sheriffs department was contacted and they
arrived about 1/2 way through the weigh-in. When Russell Hix presented
his fish (3) to be weighed, the tournament director immediately raised
the dorsal fin of the first fish and observed the hole in the fin. At
that time he and his father were confronted with both the physical and
observed evidence and told of their disqualification and were asked to
leave the area immediately under the Sheriff Deputy’s supervision.
Both criminal and civil charges are pending.

to have proof that this is happening but
glad they were caught. Its bad to know that sometimes your efforts are
overshadowed by criminals. That is what they are.

TENNESSEE says Hey Geoff
We had a similar situation happen in our area several years ago. One
thing i would suggest is to make B.A.S.S. aware of this situation. In
our case, B.A.S.S. contacted the bass club these individuals were
members of and let it be known that they absolutely would not be
welcome to fish the B.a.s.s. Federation State Tourn. Also note the
Tourn. they were caught cheating in was not even B.A.S.S. affiliated.
Even if they are not in a affiliated club now, I'm sure B.A.S.S. would
like to have these names for future referance. I think when someone
gets caught pulling this stuff, everything should be done in the
fishing tournament comunity to let as many tournament officials know
about individuals like these. Not for the purpose of humiliating or
slandering, although they deserve it, but to keep people like this out
of tournament fishing. Plain and simple, IT'S STEALING!

I saw that guy weigh in last and beat the entire field by atleast 2lbs
or close to it. Me and Jocko where just observing not in the "T" and
both he and I knew something had to be up with it. Jocko emailed me
the details that you described above. Damn what a shame someone has to
resort to cheating.

WAY TO GO! I truely hope they'll be prosecuted. They should be fined
and should have to pay all the entry fees for all the anglers they
stole from for the next 10 years.

Cheating is bad enough, but for a father to participate in this with
his own son is incredible. I'm glad my dad did not teach me those kind
of values.

Job!
Geoff, Your Mon-night tournament partner told me all about it this
morning. Unbelievable! I think that you guys handled the situation in
a most professional/ethical way. I'm glad that things didn't get out
of hand, which could have easily been the case. I just double-checked
my club roster to make sure this pair isn't on it.

that would be the night....
That we blanked a didn't stay for the weigh-in. Well, actually we had
one marginal fish that was dying, so all things considered, we passed
on weigh-in. Of course, I got 20 e-mails and a dozen phone calls in
the morning from people wanting to tell me about it.
It just amazes me that people continue to think they can do anything
they want to, without repercussions.
And to involve your son in that is just plain despicable.
Good job, Geoff.

5/16/2001 7:58:00 AM Submitted by RobShaw from Va Beach says Tim, that
was my thoughts exactly!!
Just think how many times you have fished against these guys......yet
this was the ONLY time they were caught!!!
If all of the proof and facts are truthful, the names of these
individuals need to be spread far and wide (GA Federation,Charity
event organizers, etc.)
The fact that a Father has taught and participates in cheating with
his Son tells me that this is a man with absolutely no moral values or
beliefs. I would not participate in ANY event that these individuals
were registered/associated with!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5/16/2001 8:46:00 AM Submitted by Tx_Ranger from TEXAS says Let's make
people aware of the consequences...
I think it's great that the situation was handled correctly, and the
proper authorities were notified, rather than forming a "lynch mob".
But where can people find out exactly what the laws are about cheating
in a tournament and what the reprocussions are? Because I would be
willing to bet that whenever people decide to cheat, they really don't
realize exactly how severe the punishment is if they get caught, even
if it's a small, local tournament. They probably figure if they do get
caught, then they just can't fish that tournament any more. But in
reality, it's much more severe than that, as these two have found out.
If someone would look up and post the laws described, and make people
aware just how much trouble cheaters can really get into, maybe we can
deter a few more people from considering doing this.

long night -- HEY TMIKE
It was definatly a Monday to remember, Hix was very lucky that Geoff
and company called the police. Although I think the situation would
never ever occurr again if he would have let us REDNECKS take care of
it at the weight in. (HMM.. however given the age of HIX smart move
calling the police). I am just glad we caught someone early in the
year maybe it will stop anybody else that may have been thinking
about. Triton Mike you should start fishing with us on Monday night's
it is a good time. How do you like Cartersville?

5/16/2001 10:45:00 AM Submitted by MartyB from GEORGIA says The
previous Monday
Hey Geoff, I realize you may not have evidence of cheating by this
father/son team the previous week, but didn't they win by a couple of
pounds and get big fish the week before? I understand they won about
$1,700 that night. Here is a link to last week's results for those who
are interested:
http://members.tripod.com/~allatoona/summer2001/5-7.html
(When I got the link, I noticed the "CHEATER" label next to Mr. Hix's
name for last week.) Good work, Geoff. My instinct as an entrant would
have been the lynching route, but I applaud your calling law
enforcement so he wasn't bludgeoned. I truly hope he is prosecuted.
Imagine living on the lake, enjoying tournament fishing, and not being
able to show your face at the local boat ramps. He will pay the price
unless he moves. He would probably do well to get a haircut and a new
boat so that he is not so easily recognizable. He picked an awfully
large group of locals to steal from. NOT smart!

First off I wanted to thank Geoff McCarthy for following through with
his hunch. My hats off you sir!! Jeremy I think I am going to like it
here. Gonna move just south of here after the wedding to Acworth so
the wife can be closer to her work and help with the traffic nitemare.
As for fishing with you guys on Monday plan on it!! After we are
settled in Acworth I am going to finally bite the dust and and attempt
rid myself of the restaurant biz and become a civilian for the first
time in 12 years. Then I can concentrate on da fishin a little more. I

5/16/2001 12:06:00 PM Submitted by MartyB from GEORGIA says What are
you talking about Tx Ranger?
I didn't notice any fisherman attractant. Just kidding, the guy that
updates the site always puts a new hotty up each week. Nice to look
at, but you can never get to the results until the girly is finished
loading. They are usually wearing just enough so that its not porn. As
far as the 5 fish limit weighing 5.22, I am proud to say I've caught
limits on The Dead Sea (Allatoona) that weighed less. I think I've won
money a time or two that way. There is an abundance of 12 inch cigar
shaped spotted bass on the lake and sometimes you just take what you
can get.

I think a few good old Georgia boys should dispense with some
"Southern Justice" for these two. I doubt any jury in Georgia would
convict.
Then again, that's the state that spawned the Kennedies.
