Well Sunday was my first trip on Canadian ice. The morning started out
rough, the bait shop in Wiarton is closed on Sundays, but being a small
town, 2000 plus, everyone seems to know each other. When I stopped in
at the local mini-mart to see if another town close by had a bait shop,
the owner informed me that the bait shop owner's wife cooked at the
motel next door to the bait shop. Well I hustled my buns over to the
motel and found Ted's wife, and sure enough she opened up to sell me
some bait, a good thing because I was about to abort that first attempt
at Canadian ice-fishing.
I chose Gould lake, as it has a healthy panfish population, and I was
in the mood for a fish fry. The bait shop owner's wife said that was
where her hubby was, and as he is trying to quit smoking, she was glad
he was "occupied." Not her words...but this is a "PG" group after all.
Plenty of ice, and a goodly portion of snow atop the ice. Not my
favorite conditions, but after a test hole or two I was confident the
ice was safe. There were about 20 other anglers spread out across the
lake, and my first holes indicated I was only in 5'of water. I dropped
a minnow down the hole and minutes later a perch welcomed me to
Canada. Throughout the day I got 60 perch, two smallmouth (out of
season), one pickeral (walleye), and I hooked an "Oh my Lord what the
heck do I have on, I can barely budge it." The hook slipped
out....bummer. In that I was fishing a very sensitive wisp of an ice
fishing rod, perhaps it was a good thing the hook tore out. Next time
buddy!!! All in all it was great...and the two smallies were a bonus
as they kept me guessing as my rod was bent triple as they cavorted all
around the ice hole.
Can't wait till next weekend......Lord I love Canada. Now I know why
those draft dogers never went back to the U. S. of A.

"Mad-Mikey" At first, fishing and hunting were just hobbies,
then they became addictions taking all my time
and money. If they ever find a cure for these
sicknesses--- I'm refusing treatment.

Try getting a 50 lb. lake sturgeon on 6 lb. test thru the
hole sometime, Mikey! Had one totally destroy a home made
jigging rod once. Got the next one, tho.
Sorry, no pics. Just as well- it's illegal to catch sturgeon
here on rod and reel. I put it back (after I got my jig back)-
but some folks take a dim view on pulling them out of the
water at all....

I have only been fishing for sturgeon once, in the Columbia River in
Washignton. I caught one almost 4 feet and one that was over 8 feet. That was
awesome, on 80lb braid. I was probably more excited catching the 4lb
smallmouth at the launch ramp before we headed out though.
