I've about had it with circle hooks. I've had great success hooking bass
under 3 pounds with them, but next to no luck hooking and/or holding larger
fish. I've tried sizes from 2 to 3/0, same results. I get all fired up
when I get a bite, feel for the fish, feel that slow/steady movement
characteristic of a "dude" bass. I've tried the sweep you're told to use on
the circle hooks, I've tried just reeling them in, & I've tried a stiff
hookset. Same results. I feel the fish for a second then it's gone. I
can't afford to miss bass, my tournament success depends on that not
happening.

So my quest for the perfect Senko hook goes on, circle hooks are out.

Commentaries?

Warren2,

I am a fan of circle hooks, but not for large bass. They work well for any
species when live bait is used and the "hookset" is delayed (i.e. the fish
partially swallows the bait). They work well most of the time with gills
and crappies. They work well on most fish, and they rock with catfish.

My theory(and is it just a theory) is that a large bucketmouth simply
doesn't have the right shaped mouth for the hooks to be at their best. For
the record, I wouldn't use under a 5/0 circle for bass over a pound. The
only sizes I own in circle hooks are sizes 10, 6 and 5/0. It also helps
with the hook if you push the plastic all the way to the eye and secure it
there otherwise the plastic can interfere with the hook rotating.

You wacky rigging or nose hooking?

I use circle hooks for these rigs, but the EWG for T-rigging.

I'm using the circle (or WAS), ewg's for T-rigging Brad. I'd rather t-rig
than nose-hook. I think a big part of the Senko's allure is lost when not
wacky rigging, though I have had success T-rigging including a tourney win
on the Upper Chesapeake earlier this year. I'm really dying to find a hook
I can wacky rig with & have confidence in. On alot of the tournament waters
I fish you only get a couple of chances each day, missed/lost opportunities
are VERY costly...

Yeah, they do have more wiggle at each end on the wacky rig. I have only used
a circle hook on the wacky rig, so I guess I can't offer much help to you, but
I have talked to several guys on the message board of the InsideLine and ther
are many opinions as to types of hooks. Some use straight shank hooks, some
EWG, some offset, some circle and others a straight chank with wire weed
guards.

I know several of the guys like to use Yamamoto's split shot hooks which are
like circle hooks, maybe you could try them.

I know what you mean and these are not the times to be experimenting either.

Quit playing with those Circle Hooks and get some 3/0 and 4/0 Eagle Claw HP's.
You'll love 'em.

Hi Warren2

Was it happen on TD circle hook I sent you before? I have no luck with Senko so far and Senko hater but I had many luck
with circle hook for tiny baits on my drop shotting. I had tried to use the TD cicle hook in size 1, K-Good (originator
of drop shotting) Tsunekichi's twisted circle hook, another maker's twisted circle hooks, some salt water twisted
eyeless circle hooks so far, and found the TD one is best for me. I know BPS has Gamakatsu one. And, Gary has one also.

Just came back from the tackle shops. One of five shops has stocked the Katsuichi's Decoy special shaped circle hook for
wacky rig.

Hi Hiromi,
Sorry to say, yes, I had similar problems with the ones you so kindly
sent me. I'm still up in the air with this, and the best thing I've been
able to find so far is a size 1/0 spinnerbait straight-shank trailer hook
(mustad). Tough to throw this one in the weeds.

3/0 sounds a bit big for Senkos, are you using them Jerry?

Well, I guess the only solution is to just send me your Senkos and stop
worrying about the problem alltogether. ;-)

Yep, and I love 'em. We'll have to play with them at NWC. I'll bring a few
extra.

http://www.jbnbc.com/event/010202/MVC-047S.jpg
The right one is proto type and the left one is selling product which fits for Senko 4 to 6 inch.

Just got an image of the Hunter Hook Worm 16 which is the wacky rig special hook from Katsuichi in Japan.

I upload it onto my web site at http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/9769/hunterhook1.jpg
