It has been too long since I studied electronics, but I am prettty certain
that marine batteries don't have a memory problem, like the Ni-Cad batteries
do. And I think (for no particular technical reason) that draining a marine
battery fully could cause more problems than topping it off, as the plates
might become pitted or deformed.

Recharge after every use no matter how little it is used. An
automatic charger is best as it will regulate the amps being pumped in. A
chart should be obtainable at the place that you purchased the battery or at
a good R.V. dealer concerning deep cycle batteries. The amount of amps
induced is very important. An automatic charger is the best as it starts
with a higher amperage and tapers off to a lower maintaining amperage, known
as a " taper charger" Deep cycle batteries are a totally different animal
from nickel cadmium batteries and should never be considered in the same
sentence except to say that they are different. Special considerations are
given in the time after storage for a period longer than three months. They
should be kept off of cement floors and kept at a temperature as warm as
poss. (but not in the house, explosive gas are given off by batteries and
also are quite corrosive and nasty to breath in ) as charging will keep the
cells as charged as poss. without an oxide layer being built up that will
not be too thick to burn off after the storage period. Again as technology
advances batteries will improve and a good dealer and instruction manual is
well worth the trouble to seek one out. It will only help in the longevity
of your trolling motors staying power when you really need it ( maybe an
emergency ) Wally world K mart sell a line of batteries called Nautilus and
have a dedicated charger that is an automatic taper charger for gell and
regular batteries and also has a setting for a straight ten amp charge.
Takes the worry out of charging for you. Using ten amps all the time can
deminish the life of a battery if time over the amount of discharge is not
considered. This can be the death of a battey from overcharging.
