Me and fellow group member, Gilbert Archibeque got to fish together for two
days on my home lake, Lake Mead. The fishing was TOUGH! we each caught 1 fish
in a day of practice, and a day of tournament fishing. On Friday we met, ate
breakfast and fished the lake, we had about 4 bites all day, and I caught one
on a crankbait late in the day. The tournament itself had 333 boats entered!,
we drew a boat number and we were out about in the middle. We fished some
areas close for approximately an hour before deciding to make the 45 mile run
to the Overton arm, and area Gil had never been. We entered the Muddy River to
see about 40 visible boats in the thick brush, I knew there were at more back
in the brush that we couldn't see. We fished there for awhile and we only saw
one other boat catch a fish in a few hours of fishing. On our way out we
stopped at an area, first cast Gil had a follow on a crankbait, next cast he
had our fish, a 1.33. That fish must have been a fluke because for the next
couple of hours we threw crankbaits in the brush similar to that area without a
bite. Then we made the run home. At the weigh-in we saw many boats come in
and head straight to the ramp, not stopping to weigh-in fish, approximately
half of the field caught zero, so we beat alot of guys with one fish. The
event was great fun, even though it was really cold and not many fish biting.
I had a great time talking with Gil about the group and about fishing. It was
a pleasure to fish with a great guy and a fellow group member. We are planning
to do this next year, hopefully the fish cooperate so we can cash a check.
Thanks again Gil. p.s. we also took pics of our fish to show off when they are
developed.

Good Report. I hope the "Muddy River" is its name and not the conditions
you found it. Cool to Cold muddy water is the toughest of the toughest
conditions to fish. The fish would be holding extremely tight to cover and
the strike zone would be less than 6 inches. At this time of year, I think
I would have used my sonar to find schools over rocks in 30 to 40 feet and
Carolina Rig Tubes, Vertical with Little George, Jig a heavy spinnerbait or
dragged the bottom with a jig-n-pig. Even at Mead, the water has to be in
the low fifties to high forties.

Tyler is a Great guy to fish with. At his age of 17 he has a lot of knowledge when it comes to Bass
fishing.
I learned a great deal about fishing from him and hope to fish with him again next year.
We had talked a lot and had lots of fun. I would have got lost at lake mead if he wasn't there.lol
Next year we will pre-fish for a week and set up a good plan and do better.

That 45 mile run was the longest run I have ever made in my boat. Lake Mead was nice.
My 17 foot Champ, 171 did well on lake mead. I'm glad the weather was nice with low wind.
I had fun running the boat at 55 mph hopping over wakes from the other champs. The 22 footers tried to get
us to eat their wakes but we kept on going!!!
The boat got some good air while staying in good control.
I thought that scared Tyler but he just laughed and said that there are other crazier drivers in tougher
weather. LOL

Yes the fishing was tough, plus it's hard to fish in a tournament when there were full time pros at
their home lake.
Some of the winners stayed in one spot all day catching fish.
The third place guy, a pro, fished alone and made a 70 mile run to his honey hole and did very well.
If the wind had kicked up it would have made it hard for him to get back. as the 7 foot rollers will get
you.
They need to separate the pros from the weekenders to even it out a bit.
We may plan another trip in the future for a tournament or just for fun.
Maybe we can fish the American Bass team open in April.

I have to say this, Tyler is one really nice kid and a lots fun to fish with. This guy will be a pro
some day because he has the right approach and attitude to be a winner.
I had lots of fun and I found it to be a privilege to fish with Tyler Brinks.

Thanks,

Gil

You must be right.
I did catch that bass right when the bait hit the brush.
I need to think better. the bass did tell me what the wanted,,,uhg
pitching a noisy jig seval times at each bush may have produced.
This is why this group helps me,," we learn as we go"
I will learn to use my X 75 better and apply that to lake apache in Az. next month.
The bass will be on the rock piles at that time.
The use of the sonar is one of my weaknesses.
I will be at apache at sunrise on 15nov2000

Thanks Loomis,
