Over west of there are two state parks. One has a climbing area that
looked popular when I drove through. Unfortunately, I can't recall
the name, but Texas has a state parks web page. The other possibility
is a bit farther west. Possum Kingdom State Park. It's got lots of
cliffs, but I don't know if they're happy with climbers there. I
didn't pay much attention as I was river camping on the Brazos below
the Possum Kingdom dam, where I did see some lovely looking cliffs,
but I'm a hill watcher, not climber. I don't have my Texas maps in
the house right now, so I can't even name the towns for you, but
they're both accessible from a fairly decent highway that runs about
straight west from DFW.

This link will give you a list of the Texas state parks. Look in the menu
strip at the top of the page for parks.

Yes, thanks. That's it. And it's practically in* the town from which
it takes its name, but seems nicely wild in spots. Nice park. Had I
been doing car camping, I'd have been happy to stay there.

We've stayed at LMW State Park. They do have some great climbing facilities,
but if you're going to camp, call & ask if there are any events going on around
it when you plan to go. We couldn't get any sleep because of a rock festival
going on next door. Another great place, about 45 min. from Austin, is
Enchanted Rock. HUGE granite dome w/ lots of hiking & climbing. Fills up fast
though......

Lake Whitney has some pretty steep bluffs near the state park. I don't know
about access.
Dinosaur State Park near Glen Rose has lots of hiking and mountain bike
trails.

Another good one would be Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
