Last I checked, Eureka was still in California. Perhaps the Jefferson
secession is being revived?
Nevertheless, there are a number of nice campgrounds along the north
coast in the Jenner-Mendocino-Fort Bragg area, with lots of places for
day hikes.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park, north of Garberville on 101, has several
campgrounds in the redwoods. Also, Standish Hickey, where Hwy 1
meets 101, south of Garberville has two campgrounds. Humboldt has
bigger redwoods, and more developed trails and touristy things.
If you want to stay on the ocean, there is Mackerricher State Park,
north of Fort Bragg. It's right on the coast, but I'm not sure what
access there is to the beach, or if there is any beach, I've only
stayed in the bicycle camping area which is off by itself on the other
side of the road. The best campground on the ocean I've stayed at up
there is Patrick's Point State Park, but it is north of Eureka. Some
of the campsites overlook the ocean, and you can walk down to the
beach.
About 20 to 30 miles north of Monterey are New Brighton State Beach
at Capitola (south of Santa Cruz), and Sunset State Beach at
Watsonville, both off of Hwy 1. In both campgrounds the beach is
within walking distance of the campsites. Be sure to bring plenty of
quarters as the state is installing quarter operated controls on the
showers. You need at least two quarters for one shower.
About 35 miles south of Monterey is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. It's
some distance from the ocean, but has lots of hiking trails. These
3 parks around Monterey are generally filled up during the summer,
so you probably should get reservations. There is another campground
at Andrew Molera State Park, a few miles north of Big Sur, but it is a
walk in, about 1/2 mile I think, and doesn't have any piped in water.
It has water in big plastic buckets which doesn't taste very good.

I forgot to include the following:
General State Park Information -- 916/653-6995
Just in case you needed a map or something. The other number assumes
you know where you want to make reservations.

If you're going to stay at any State Park along the California coast, you'll
need to make reservations well in advance. There are quite a few up and
down the coast. They are very popular during the camping season and will
most will be full if you don't make a reservation. California State has
a ticket agency handle the reservations. Here's the number to call:
DESTINET 800/444-7275
I can't emphasize to you enough how important it is to get a reservation
for these campgrounds.
Good Luck!

Try Salt Point north of Jenner.
