Please help a newbie understand how I can hook up a 12 Volt Marine
battery to my Jayco popup.

I've got a 12V converter but have no idea how I can hook up a battery.

I have done this with my Jayco Cardinal. There is a 'hot'
12V pin in the connector at the trailer hitch. I went to
the Jayco dealer and got one of the cables with the plug that
goes into this connector. It is just a connector plug with
about 4-5 foot of leads attached to it.

First you need to find out how the connector pins are wired.
You can see the ground wire because it is attached to the
frame just behind the connector. Get the 12v battery and
hook a couple of leads to it. Attach the battery ground
lead to the connector ground pin. Probe the other pins
one at a time with the battery 12V lead. You will see the
trailer lights light up one at a time. Write down the
pin assignments for future reference. Eventually, you
will get to a pin that does not appear to do anything.
Go into the trailer and switch the Converter power switch
from 120VAC to 12VDC. Turn on one of the interior lights
and it will light up when you have 12v on the connector
hot 12v pin. I cut off each of the connector plug cable
wires EXCEPT for the 12V and ground. This is the cable you
got from the dealer. Just attach battery clamps to the
end of the cable and hook it to the battery.

I put the battery in a plastic battery box and run the
cable into the box. Be SURE that you have the polarity
correct. Battery '-' to frame ground and '+' to the
connector 12v pin.

I carry the battery in the van and hook it up whenever
I need it. It makes it easy to re-charge it this way.

Kevin,

Get a spare connector from your Jayco dealer and wire it to the battery when you
are in the campground. The connector is the same as is used in your wiring
harness from your car. I don't remember the Jayco color code right now, but I
would bet that it is RED for the 12 V Hot wire and White for the ground. The
rest of the wires would be unused.

I don't know Jayco specifically, but on most pop-ups there's a switch
inside the camper which lets you select EITHER operation off the battery OR
off the converter when you're plugged into a 110v outlet at the campground.
The converter is not a charger for the battery - it's a separate power
supply. If you are NOT connected to a 110v outlet and your inside switch IS
in the 110v position, you will be unable to get power from the marine
battery. If your camper is equipped to use a marine battery, there should
be a carrier bracket and cable connections on the front tow bar. The cable
should be equipped with a fuse holder - be sure it contains a fuse. Observe
correct polarity when connecting the battery. When you close the pop-up, be
sure the power switch is off and/or the battery is disconnected. That's
because accidentally leaving a lamp on in the closed camper can cause
damage or fire.
