I'd go in the early/mid spring. I'm hoping to finally make use of my
folding kayak.

Note that many campgrounds in the area are closed for the winter,
through various times in April or May.
Ahern State Park in Laconia is on Lake Winnesquam, minimalist
facilities, but free and year-round.

For day use, with boat lunching onto Winnepasaukee, Ellacoya State
Park. There is an RV only camping area, no tents allowed.

Most camping areas in the Lakes region are private, not state or
federal. www.woodalls.com will help, or one of their printed guides.
Private ones will have more amenities.
I would recommend choosing a weekend which is not part of Motorcycle
Week, as camping in the area gets crowded.
Happy trails,

But I believe it's day-use only, no camping, and I don't think boating
(kayaking) is allowed.

Actually, I wanted it the other way around; tent, not RV.

I have Woodall's Tenting Directory, but, of course, the information is
rather minimal. I was hoping for specific comments... "so-and-so
campsite is always a mess," "this one has great hiking trails," etc.

There are put-ins on Winnesquam, at least one public beach as well.
Those lakes tend to have limited public access, but do have occasional
public boat ramps for small craft. The web page for Ahern did mention
camping, seemed rather basic and possibly new..

Just wanted to warn you if you did see a reference to camping there.

My usual camping in NH is further north, and almost always at Forest
Service sites if not into the woods. But I hike far more than I kayak.
Any particular reason to focus on Squam? There are other areas which
might work for you as well.
