Being a camper/climber I like to travel light so as to have as much
energy as possible reserved for climbing. Much to my surprise, the new
L.L. Bean catalog has a Gore-Tex bivi sack for sale at the remarkable cost
of $99. Could this be my low cost savior? Does anyone out there have
experience with L.L. Bean bivi's or tents? I have never used any of their
gear and would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

I don't have the Bean bivy, but judging from the quality of the rest of
their gear, it is very high on my shopping list. I just have to find the
$99! ;-)

Seriously, although Bean does sell some overpriced yuppie trendy junk
clothing, for the most part their technical equipment is well-made and
well-priced.

Just another thought:

If you're thinking of getting a new sleeping bag anyway, look to one covered
with Gore-tex. The extra cost is about $99, but a sleeping bag with gore-text
shell weighs less than the combination.

Cheers,

Sean.

You can no longer purchase a sleeping bag covered with Gore-tex --
only Gore Dryloft bags are available nowadays. Dryloft is only
water-repellent, not waterproof. Not that the old Gore-tex bags were
ever waterproof because of the number of non-sealed seams on the
bags. . .

If you want to keep your sleeping bag dry, get a bivouac sack.

So, here is the question my Dad (the backpacker) asked me (the camper).
He had a bivi sack, but what he wanted to know was how to get into it
in the rain, so you enter dry.

Well? I'd love to give him a good answer.
