There are actually several different meanings for the word "nanori"
which is written with the kanji for name followed by the kanji for mount
or ride. First of all it is associated with the ancient practice of
announcing one's name on the battlefield. However, another meaning of
the word and the one which was used in my previous posting is the name
which is assumed by male members of the court nobility and the samurai
classes upon becoming adults at about the age of 12. Unfortunately,
there can be a great deal of confusion concerning Japanese names because
of errors in translation or translitteration and the fact that I know of
no books published in English other than a small pamphlet published in
the SCA which even attempt to deal with period Japanese names. I am
attempting to write my own pamphlet at the moment which I hope will make
a small contribution to the information currently available in English.
(Incidentally, I am familiar with both P. G. O'Niel and Koop & Inada.)
Actually, my project is starting to near completion and I will start
pulling test prints from the laser writer down in Maryland soon. So,
now I have a pamphlet in search of a publisher.

Is the nanori a _personal_ name, like "John" or "Akio", or is it
a "family" name, denoting lineage or household affiliation? The examples
you gave seemed to have two sorts of names in them -- "first son" followed
by what looked like "family" names of the 'Matsuyama' type.

How does this name relate to the more-or-less ordinary family
names that I know modern Japanese use?
