singular or plural with "everyone"

There is a slight complication with "everyone". Within the same
sentence, Cariadoc is quite correct - "he" or "he or she" is the
proper choice. However, when the pronoun appears in a separate
sentence, "they" is correct. So - "Everyone is getting his own
plate. They will return shortly."

To be ideologically inoffensive, one should say (depending on one's
listener's ideology) "Everyone is getting his or her own plate."
