We were discussing national saints at work yesterday. Of course, we all
know that the patron saint of Ireland is St. Patrick, and of England is
St. George, and of the Isle of Jersey is St. Helier (though I cannot remember
the patron saints of France, Scotland or the other Channel Islands).

I asked one of my co-workers, who is of Ukrainian descent, who the patron
saint of the Ukraine is. He couldn't tell me.

Now I'm curious. Is there one? Does anyone know who it is?

(On the other hand, maybe I have a nifty research project on my hands)

Greetings!
My favourite lil' saints' book, _Saints Preserve Us!_
by S. Kelly and R. Rogers, lists St. Josaphat, a 17th
century saint who tried to reconcile the Orthodox
and Catholic churches, as saint for Ukraine. This is
in the eyes of Ukrainian Catholics, I believe--
dunno what Ukrainian Orthodox would go for. However,
I know that most Ukrainians would probably agree on St. Vladimir
(or St. Volodimyr, which is the Ukrainian spelling),
the guy who got the whole ball rolling in 988. There's
a big nifty statue of him out front of St. Vlad's
on Spadina in Toronto, and you see Ukrainians wearing
the little tridents which are his dynastic symbol all the time..

Cheers!

Oh, as a side note...the patron saint of Paris, France, is St.
Genevieve. Now *how* would I know that? :) :)
