So my fiancee works for a business that gets calls from
all across the country, and she receives a call from
a place, and the computer brings up the name "Milpitas, CA".

"Oh, you're in MILL-pih-toss"

"Um, it's pronounced mill-PEE-tiss"...

So: half of the people who read this say:
"Well, of course, it's mill-PEE-tiss: what else could it be?

And the other half (including, probably, all of Northshield) say:
"What? You mean it ISN'T MILL-pih-toss??"

You learn something new every day.

More like "mill-PEE-t's" or "mill-PEE-tus". In any case it's
about 35 miles south of me...

Our usual problems come from people who never learned any Spanish
and then see the local names. Not to mention the ones that don't
know that "Andreas" is "Andrew"....

And then you get those of us who say: "What? You mean it *isn't*
Mil-PEE-tass?"

The SCA branch in San Francisco now is the Shire of Cloondara.
But once upon a time it was the Province of St. Andrews, whose
arms contained a saltire (St. Andrew's Cross) fracted, and whose
motto was "Non Est Culpa Nostra" (It's Not Our Fault).
