It has weight rooms w/free weights and machines like Nautilus,
stationary bikes, treadmills, sauna, and a beautiful beach which allows
nudity. (men's and women's beaches are separate)The water is fairly warm
for the Atlantic Ocean, as it is part of the bay.
Just about two miles from downtown Boston. Inexpensive, too.
$50.00/year. No day passes or guest passes are offered. Elders 62 and
older get a price break - $5.00/yr.
The equipment is certainly adequate, though old. Not quite as flashy as
your average upscale health and fitness club, but considering the cost
it is a great value.
If you are unfamiliar with South Boston, be advised that it is very
conservative and "straight."
I've lived in Boston all 53 of my years and have been running a
non-landed club of some kind for the last 30.
I disagree with your statements.
If you managed to go nude it was an annomaly.
Naturists (male and female) that have attempted to go nude there are
frequently told to dress by the staff and failure to do so will result
in expulsion from the grounds with instructions ot never return.
It's been like that since they renovated the place just over a decade
ago.
One may hope that what you experienced is a turn or change in policy
but official policy there is no nudity.
DMK
I can assure you with certainty that there is no nude beach or nude use
there, except in total privacy.

It is true that official policy is that nudity is not allowed, and there
are signs up to that effect. About two years ago, it was enforced. But I
was there yeaterday, and there were 8-10 guys sun bathing and swimming
nude. I can assure you, I am not lying about this. A very relaxed,
casual attitude toward nudity prevails there today.
It probably is determined by whomever is running the place, whether or
not to enforce the no nudity policy. The present management is not
enforcing the no nudity policy.

Which in and of itself is a reason to issue caution to potential users
which was missing from your original posting.
Keep in mind that you are posting to a world-wide network here and
that it is possible that some people will drive 2-3 or more hours to
have the nude experience. It would be a shame for people to get there
only to find that the staff of that day was enforcing official policy.
Appropriate caveats should always be included so that potential users
are properly informed with ALL of the information and not just wishful
thinking.
I could offer a number of places where people get lucky to be nude but
official policy has been otherwise, and for that reasons these places
have been de-listed from shared information posted out to naturists,
and they are no longer carried in large publications such as the WORLD
GUIDE.
Report the whole story, please.

I will get a membership and scope it out more thoroughly. It may be that
I have observed an anomalous occurance, and that enforcement is the
norm. But if you live in Boston, it is worth checking out even if it
does not turn out to be reliably co all the time, their health and
fitness facilities make it worth while considering the relatively small
investment of $50.00 a year. $4.17 per month.
I would recommend that it NOT be listed in publications and web sites as
a co recreation area. It is trying to walk the fine line between being a
family oriented city funded health facility, and still providing a
relaxed approach to co swimming. It is what they call an "open secret."
If the Curley Community Center acquires a reputation, and it becomes
widely known that nudity is allowed, it will probably change back to
strict enforcement of not-nudity.
Which is why it is OK to tell people about it, in forums or word-of-
mouth, but not a good idea to publicize it. If the Boston Globe gets
wind of it, it will be over. If some nosy reporter finds out about it
and does an expose, they will be shouting it from the rooftops.
Do not...repeat do not...put the Curley Center in any nude guides to New
England.

Usenet postings are archived and last for decades.
The infamous "L-Street Brownies" are in residence there. Their name
for "brownies" comes from a time when nude sunbathing was openly
allowed and the result was their deep "brown" tans.
They are now less brown but still take an annual "Polar Bear" swim on
January 1 there.
It may be the "Curley" center after James Michael Curley a former
notorius mayor (and half-assed relative of mine by marriage someplace
along the way), but to the townies in Boston it will always be the
"L-Street Bath House".
:-)
Cheers!

Hmm.. I was ready to jump in my van and take a ride to Boston from the
Berkshires, about a three hour jaunt. We have no public pool whereas
once can swim nude. There are skinny dipping spots provided one don't
get caught and even a couple where no one checks, although they did
close the parking lots to a few.. At Cumminton and Cold River parking
is for "live parking only". Unattended vehilces will be ticketed and/
or towed, its a long hike to civilization from either if they take
your vehicle.

There's always Berkshire Vista for a paid venue, and the Ledges is
within a much shorter travel radius.
I you're going to give the Curley Center a try, be advised that you'll
have to purchase a yearly membership. Seriously, if you are going to
drive that far, you should keep going 'till you get to Cape Cod. There
you can check out Herring Cove beach for the gayly oriented or Longnook
for the straightly oriented.
I don't thing the Curley Center is worth going out of your way for. It's
good if you live near by, and intend to make use of the weight room, and
other exercise stuff.
I just got a membership, and have been going there, so I am an "insider."
One thing very few people know is that you can go there for free. If
you are going just to use the beach, go in the L Street entrance, tell
they guy at the desk you are not a member, but are just going to the
beach. Tell him it is your understanding that non members can use the
beach. He will sternly advise you that you can go on the beach, but
you cannot use anything associated w/the building. You can't use
showers, lockers, weight room, sauna, just the beach.
Some things it is advisable to know if you are considering going
there. South Boston is a very conservative enclave of the city. It is
not gay-friendly. If you are gay, it is advisable that you not be real
flamboyant about it. If you can't pass yourself off as straight, don't
go there.

Is that the health club or South Boston in general?
I need to know so I can tell my openly gay friend up on Telegraph Hill
that he needs to sell his house right away.
Given the number of years he has been there I think he could get a
great return on his investment.
