I'm going to be moving to Austin, TX soon. I heard there was some kind
of nudist area around there...can anyone give me more information about
that?

Thanks,
Jason

Yes, although there are a number of nudist and clothing optional facilities in
the Austin area, the closest and most well-known is Hippie Hollow, a county-operated
park which is located west of Austin on Lake Travis. Its clothing optional beach has been
in use for at least 15 years (as far as I can recall :-). Note that the beach
is not a sand beach, and is quite rocky in places (I mean BIG rocks) so some kind of
footwear is definitely appropriate.

Regards,

Ben

There used to be two clothing optional apartment building in Austin.
Are those still active or defunct now? If defunct does anyone know
why? One of my goals is to open a c.o. apartment building in San
Diego. I assume as a committed nudist I'll have a better shot at
success than some of the apartments that were run by slum lords
trying to make a buck. But I am curious what problems I can expect.
If anyone out there is interested in investing in my building let me
know. :-)

How about posting directions to Hippie Hollow, along with any personal
"review" of the place - I've heard a lot of folks talk about it, and hope
to visit this spring/summer, but a first -hand report would be welcome!

Take RR 2222 north/west of the city until it reaches the traffic
light at RR 620. There's a 7-11 across the street. Turn left. Turn right
at the next blinker. Parking is $5.00/day.

Alternatively, take IH-35 north to the 620 exit (that's Round Rock)
and head west until you pass the 2222 intersection.

The park itself is comprised of two large parking lots (which
get very full but never seem to quite reach capacity except on, like,
the 4th of July, a wide paved walkway that is reached by a flight of stairs
from the parking lot (there is a ramp), and a set of limestone terraces
that ring the lake. The number of terraces exposed is determined by
how much rain we've had recently. In a dry year it's quite a climb from
the rocks to the water. The rocks provide lots of nice places to sun
yourself on, but make diving dangerous: every year a few people hurt
themselves diving in. The paved walk is about a mile long and the park
extends some way past its end. It's legal to undress the minute you're
past the parking lot, although not everyone does.

The place can get pretty crowded on a nice summer weekend, but
if you get there before noon or after 4, you should be able to find a
nice spot. If you go during the week you can have the place pretty
much to yourself. There are no concessions stands or water fountains
but there are chemical toilets. I bring a stick of white sage to hold
in my teeth or I can't hold my breath long enough to use them...

The real problems at the lake are the heat and the fire ants.
You should bring lots of water, and wear a hat. Daytime temperatures
in the summer range from 95-105. We don't consider the water warm
enough for swimming until we've had a few 90 degree days, usually by
April. There's not much you can do about the ants except bring a beach
chair to sit on (they don't seem to be smart enough to climb chairs) but
I just sit on my towel and swat them. Some people spray their spots with
Raid which really pisses me off: deliberately poisoning the water supply!
Idiots...

Hippie Hollow isn't as nice a CO place as Sandy Hook or some
of the California beaches, but it's the only easily accessible spot in
Texas. This accessiblity also brings a rather annoying gawker
problem. Groups of gawkers will actually set up their cooler and
spend the day drinking beer (and throwing the cans on the ground!)
right behind their chosen victims. On the other hand, you can pick a
spot that's not easily gawked at - behind a bush or far enough down
the rocks - or set up near a large group of nudists so that you don't
feel so...exposed... :-) At any one time, the population runs about
50% nude and about 25% female. During summer holidays this changes to
75% nude and 50% female. I think that's because we get visitors from
pretty far away and those people come to get naked and swim in the
lake.

I've been there twice last summer; never did the female representation
rise above 18%. Each woman had 5 or more men hanging around her.

Not quite true; plenty of people show up after work to enjoy the long
summer afternoons.

> This accessiblity also brings a rather annoying gawker problem.

True, plus the homosexual exhibitionistic sex players. I saw three
separate incidents of show-off circle jerks and masturbators, one of which
set himself up 3 feet from where I was sunning on the rock. I tried to
ignore him, but he kept at it until I moved away. No wonder women feel
threatened and stay away in droves. As much as I dislike it, I support
the clubs' rules requiring a gender balance.

Well, I'd expect some day-to-day variation. One time I was there
with 5 college women from UT... I think my figures are pretty accurate,
averagely speaking, that is.

>> If you go during the week you can have the place pretty much to yourself.

I meant that there are only a few power boats and you can usually
find a cove to share with maybe one other couple. I _have_ been there
and been one out of 4 people in the whole park... Depends on your timing.

>True, plus the homosexual exhibitionistic sex players. I saw three

I have seen very little of this. I've seen a few perverts jerking
off in the bushes, but never had an actual confrontation. For what it's
worth, my wife sometimes goes alone, and I know of several other women who
do also.

Blechh. Are you saying that without blatant sexual discrimination
men would be frequenting nudist clubs to jerk off in front of each other?

Gender ratio is not the problem. The real problem is people who come not
to participate but to stare at the others who are nude and to make them
uncomfortable. Clubs don't have to have strict rules on gender balance
to control gawkers, all they have to do is to show them to the gate.

When I moved here in 1988 there was one nudist apartment complex on
Manor Rd very close to the airport in what I would consider not a
very nice part of town. The complex was well laid out for a nudist
clientele, built like a stockade with only two entrances into a
central courtyard and all apartments facing in. Nothing was visible
from the street. Later that same year, 1988, the complex was sold
to a new owner who immediately evicted all of the nudist tenants
and made it a textile complex. At that time the apts suffered from
a low occupancy rate which the new owner sought to remedy by making
them non-nudist. To my knowledge that was the last nudist apartment
complex in Austin. I don't know of any here now. I do recall the
Austin Apts being discussed in a fall/winter issue of N in 1988.
They also talked about some Apts in Arizona. Someone recently
mentioned some nudist apts in Dallas but I don't know any details
about those...

Sure...

Leave downtown Austin headed west on FM2222, follow 2222 about 10 miles
to FM620, turn left on 620. Go approx 1 mile and turn right onto
Commanche Trail. You'll see signs for a restaurant named "Oasis" and
Hippy Hollow Park. Follow Commanche Trail for about 1 mile
past "Oasis" and you'll see the park on your left. Enter the park, pay
the $5.00 park entrance/parking fee, park, and follow the walkways down
to the waterfront area.

as for review:
The park itself includes a paved walkway that skirts the lake side on
a hillside for about 1/2 a mile. Below the walkways are teirs of rock
ledges that people walk along, lay out on and store their stuff while
they explore the lake on floats and rafts. The park includes two sets
of latrine facilities located along the main walkway at the entrance
and at the 2/3 point. Nudity is fully legal anywhere in the park
(the parking lot is questionable). The crowd there ranges in size from
<50 to >500 on a nice day. The people range from UT students to
famalies, to singles, to well just about anything. The very far end
of the park from the entrance is now predominately gay. Other areas
are mixed with packs of UT students, older couples, younger couples,
individuals, and the obligatory gawkers. Drawbacks to the park are
the gawkers, sometimes multitudious, boats crusing offshore with
binoculars, and sometimes rowdy types within the park itself. It
is regularly patrolled by the sherriffs dept who try to keep it
orderly and safe for everyone. The sherriffs deputies are very
friendly, helpful, and have no prob whatsoever with the nudity.
I enjoy visit whenever I get chance.

Hope this helps,

According to a story in today's newspaper, sharks tend to classify
an evenly tanned human being as "not good food" but they are attracted by
contrasts, such as tan-lines and swim suits. So, next time someone asks
you why you're always taking your clothes off, tell them
"So the sharks don't get me".

I missed the reference as to which paper this was in. Can someone tell
me? I'd really like to get a copy.
