Could you give us directions to it?

I found this at the netnude site. Is this pretty acurate LoBall?
Were the people friendly?:
Magic Circle. Quartzsite, Arizona. Recognized by The Naturist Society and is on
the BLM's (Bureau of Land Management) Laposa South Long Term Visitor Area. The
Magic Circle is on public land, has been used as nude for 11 years with
signage, the ranger station will give directions to our nude area, we don't
charge anyone but the BLM does. We have potluck's each month, outings to hot
springs, to restaurants, to landed nudist resorts and then there is all the
things to do in Quartzsite and surrounding area. The fee for use of the area
and the trash and sewer dump and water station is $20 per week or $150 for the
season (6mo) and is paid to the BLM, we don't charge anything but do accept
donations to help defray the cost of signage and handouts giving visitors news
of upcoming events, potlucks, bonfires, gatherings by clubs, visits to hot
springs, etc. Since there is no shoreline we have to completely surround our
area with signs warning of nude sunbathing and we MUST remain in our area while
nude, and not climb on top of our RV's nude. Other than that we have a good
relationship with the rangers and last year there wasn't one complaint
registered with the rangers. There is lots to do in the area and Quartzsite has
the worlds biggest flea-market ever, along with the gem & mineral shows in Jan
& Feb. Directions: From Quartzsite, Az go south on highway 95 to mile marker
102 and watch on the left for the ranger station for the La Posa south Long
Term Visitor area (LTV). That is where you will pay for your sticker and can
get directions to the nude area, but after getting your sticker you can just
continue on the paved road and then on the dirt road and watch for the American
& TNS flags on the right. Don't try to go any further without stopping at the
flags and seeing Mayor Jim. We have had several RV's stuck in the wash because
they didn't get directions on where to go from the mayor's flags. Also the
mayor will give you a flyer with news of the upcoming events. No website at the
current time. Email Dick for additional information. Additional contacts:
(Summer months: James Helsel HCR 33 Box33965 Ely, Nv. 89301). (Winter months:
James Helsel Box 1045 Quartzsite, Az 85346) The phone numbers are (land line in
summer 775-591-0422) and (cell phone number all year 602-538-3751) Jim has two
hearing aids but doesn't always hear the cell phone.

>How did you like it?

If you like dry camping out in the middle of the low desert, as we do, it's
wonderful.

>I have never been there?

You'll need an RV -- or at least a good sized vehicle plus a tent and very warm
clothing and sleeping bags. In Dec-Jan-Feb and part of March, nightly lows can
be around freezing.

>Are there any people who stay there year long?

No. The BLM area is closed during the five or six summer months -- at least
partly because it's either very hot or very wet.

>Could you give us directions to it?

From Quartzsite, go south towards Yuma. Go past the La Posa North entrance on
the left. A few miles farther, turn left into La Posa South. Pay your fee at
the entrance.

Continue on the paved road past the dump/water/trash stations. Then continue
on the (now) gravel road looking on the right for signs saying "Magic Circle"
and "Mayor Jim" and "N." Turn right, follow the signs to Mayor Jim's flagpole
which has both a US and a Naturist flag. Don't take an RV into this first
entrance. Instead, go to the next cluster of the above signs which will also
include signs saying "Bw/oF."

>I found this at the netnude site. Is this pretty acurate LoBall?

The blurb below has many faults.

>Were the people friendly?

The people there are friendly and very helpful to those who are worthy of it.

However, chronic complainers and those who use rec.nude to misrepresent reality
will likely receive a cold shoulder.

>Magic Circle. Quartzsite, Arizona. Recognized by The Naturist Society and is
>on
>the BLM's (Bureau of Land Management) Laposa South Long Term Visitor Area.

It's "La Posa South" -- two words.

The Nevada nonlanded club named "The Magic Circle" is affiliated with TNS. The
~40-acre area of La Posa South LTVA called "The Magic Circle" is loosely,
informally, and unofficially administered by the founders of that nonlanded
club without any actual authority to do so having been granted by BLM.

>The
>Magic Circle is on public land, has been used as nude for 11 years with
>signage, the ranger station will give directions to our nude area, we don't
>charge anyone but the BLM does. We have potluck's each month, outings to hot

>springs, to restaurants, to landed nudist resorts ...

I'm unaware of any group visits to landed nudist resorts by those who camp in
the Magic Circle area of La Posa South. The nearest resorts are a fair
distance away.

That's accurate, although the English is abominable there as elsewhere.

>Since there is no shoreline we have to completely surround our

>area with signs warning of nude sunbathing ...

True, although the signs are small, widely spaced, and easy to miss.

>... and we MUST remain in our area

>while
>nude, and not climb on top of our RV's nude.

Propaganda. It's federal land. There's nothing to stop anyone from parking
anywhere and putting out their own signs.
Moreover, I have never heard Mayor Jim or his various delegates mention not
going on top of an RV while nude -- although I suppose I wouldn't do so if we
were parked near the boundary with textile rigs nearby.

>Other than that we have a good
>relationship with the rangers and last year there wasn't one complaint
>registered with the rangers.

Most complaints are from those who deliberately park at the borders, gawk, then
file complaints. The rangers tell them to park somewhere else.

>There is lots to do in the area and Quartzsite

True.

>... but after getting your sticker you can just

>continue on the paved road and then on the dirt road and watch for the
>American

Very bad advice. Mayor Jim doesn't always fly the TNS flag, and there's
another nearby flagpole with an equal-size
American flag. It's easy to go to the wrong place. Moreover, you can't see
the flags from the gravel road when there's no wind -- and you can't see them
at night. Refer to my directions in another post in this thread.

>Don't try to go any further without stopping at the
>flags and seeing Mayor Jim. We have had several RV's stuck in the wash
>because
>they didn't get directions on where to go from the mayor's flags.

More propaganda. There are two entrances into the Magic Circle area. Use the
second one for RVs. There's absolutely no reason to go to Mayor Jim's site
first. Even if you do, don't count on anyone being there -- or paying any
attention to you.

Jim, Bev, or whoever Jim has designated as the "Assistant Mayor" of the moment
will come around asking you to sign their guest book. You don't have to go to
them.

In many ways, it's wise to avoid them until you've parked and changed into
uniform. Your nudity saves you a lot of questions and changes the tone of the
questions you are asked.

>Also the
>mayor will give you a flyer with news of the upcoming events. No website at
>the
>current time.

True, or it was the last time I checked.

>Email Dick for additional information.

From what I've heard, Dick spent last winter in Florida, which my informants
regard as a major blessing.

>Additional contacts:

I contacted the BLM office by e-mail yesterday. They said that this area is
indeed open all year.
They said the 6 month pass is good from Sept 15th till April 15th--after that
these are the charges AND one can only stay at a campsite for 14 days at a time
while during the sept 15th - april 15th time one can stay for six months in one
spot.

From April 16th through September 14th, the fee is $5 daily per vehicle or $50
annually per vehicle, for up to 5 people per vehicle. There will be a $1 per
person fee charged for each person over the 5 person limit. The maximum stay
is 14 days in a 28-day period. Visitors must pay daily fees or purchase annual
permits at the La Posa South Contact Station or at the BLM Yuma Field Office.

OK. Since you talked to them, I won't dispute that. My data isn't recent, and
I may have misunderstood what I was told.

I'm surprised, however, since there are pretty severe safety and environmental
risks associated with summer use of the La Posa LTVAs.

First, it gets to 115 degrees F out there, sometimes worse. There's no
power at all, and all water must be hauled.

Second, that desert floor is like iron in winter. Any damage from
vehicles is minor and gets washed out when monsoon season rolls around.
However, damage done by vehicles during the big summer rains isn't so easily or
so naturally repairable.

I'd been told that BLM closed those LTVAs to camping during the summer --
primarily for those two reasons. It sounded wise to me.

Apparently not.

Yes it is. There is no one there in the summer, it is way to hot. But in the

The areas are open, but are hotter than hades unless you have a really good
solar system (solar powered swamp coolers are available) or a good generator
and AC.

We're open all summer if you want a cool soak and a hookup. Lots of people
from the Magic Circle and Quartzsite in general visit here all year long. We
had at least three Magic Circle parties here this season. Contact us offlist

I lived in the desert in both AZ and CA for three years just under a tarp out
of my car--no RV with no air conditioning year round.
It can be done. There are indeed people in Quartzsite in AZ and people in Slab
City in CA that do just that; certainly not many.
It is not for the feint of heart that's for sure!
But myself and my son and my animals did just fine. :-)

How far from Hwy 10 is marker 102? I am not at all familiar with that area,

few miles from town or quite a long distance?

Well yes El Dorado can be downright unfriendly. Both the owners have said they
are not "people persons".
But sometimes they are in friendlier moods or they have some nice people
working there at times--so just depends on when you happen to go.
El Dorado is not next door to a truck stop.
The truck stop is across the road and down about a half mile.
The part about El Dorado being undeveloped is the joy of the place.
THe owners have kept it a out in the country/desert hot springs soaking type
place.
And with not much lighting at night-you can really see the stars!

There are a dwindling number of people there; some are still coming to soak.

April is rarely too hot; it's been mostly in the 80's with 7 - 20% humidity
= heavenly. The reason many people leave in early April (or late March)
isn't because of the heat, but rather to be home in time to file their
taxes.
