More police patrols needed at nude beach
A string of sexual assaults at Tower Beach have two female victims
demanding more patrols from police.
UBC grad students Heather Roxborough and Stephanie Lepsoe say men at
the clothing-optional beach have made a habit of intimidating women by
masturbating nearby.
"A man comes up, starts a conversation two metres away, sits down,
strips down and starts masturbating while he's looking at me," Lepsoe
said of an August incident.
Roxborough suffered the same fate when a different man masturbated
near her.
RCMP Const. Annie Linteau said no reports have been filed regarding
such incidents.

At Haulover I've witnessed this behavior. Once, early one morning when
the beach was empty except for me, another guy, and a young couple,
the guy started masturbating near the couple. He eventually was scared
off, but still the young lady was upset by the incident.
There's also a lot of sort of clandestine self-pleasuring going on,
and guys getting chubbies or even sporting full erections. Haulover
has a handout card about "beach etiquette" that plainly states the
illegality and inappropriateness of sexual behavior, but the more time
I spend there, the more I can see that many people are there for a
sexual thrill.
I'm not quite prepared to say at this point that I believe the current
scene at Haulover is more about sex than it is about nudism, but I'm
beginning to think in that direction.
I'll continue to go there just the same. There's no need for me to
feel contaminated by the behavior of other people. They have no power
over me. And nothing can top the contentment of reading a good book,
nude by the shore, on a clear and sunny South Florida day.

Scared off? Why not arrested?
Sounds like the police should have been called. Lewd behavior should not
be tolerated in public. It's a crime.

It may be a crime but it also seems quite common at nude beaches.
In principle I like the concept of nude beaches but in practice it
doesn't seem to work.
I have one idea that might work. Give over the running of nude
beaches to a private group. Let them charge like five dollars for the
maintenance of the beach. Set up a gate that one must enter to go to
the beach and then if they see anyone behaving inappropriately they
could ban them from the beach and even file charges agains them.

I asked them if they wanted me to complete the call to police that I
was in the process of making when I came over to their location. The
woman said "yes," the man "no." The exchange was taking place while
the masturbator was taking off up the beach. The woman then changed
her mind and said, "No don't call them." I had no intention of
swearing out a complaint against the guy. The activity took place 40
yards from me, near the couple's blanket. They were the object of his
offense, not me. If they didn't want to go through the hassle and
strain of dealing with the police, in the process making the asshole
who offended against them a recurring part of their lives for untold
months or even years ahead, I wasn't about to counsel them otherwise.
Personally, I don't think of the police as "saviors." The government's
big foot often breaks the china of victims, too, and usually the
services of the police should be used only as a last resort. There is
no magic bullet in police possession that will right every wrong in
the world, and one's personal judgment about which course is the right
one to take in a given situation is often superior to the judgment
that might be found in a court of law.

By not having law enforcment on your side you risk having the police deem
the pervert as a "nudist" and then tarring you with the same brush.
My local club clearly has the good will of the police and can count on them
when someone acts out. The cops don't see all nudists as perverts. They
see perverts as criminals.
