If before you had kids your morning routine involved strolling to the
bathroom wearing nothing but a towel slung over your shoulder and a
smile on your face, eventually you’ll have to keep Mr. Happy under
wraps once your kids get older. When you live under the same roof
with people, it’s inevitable that there’s going to be some exposure.
Your daughter might catch a glimpse of your unit if you don’t shut the
bathroom door when you take a leak, and your son might happen upon his
mom’s boobs if the bedroom door is ajar when she changes; but there’s
a big difference between inadvertent fleshy peeks and parading around
the house in the raw like it’s the locker room at the gym.

Of course you want to teach your kids that the human body is a natural
thing and you don’t want your kids to freak out over seeing someone
naked, but you’ve also got to teach modesty and privacy so they don’t
get sent home from school for taking their pants off during an
educational video because “that’s how Daddy likes to watch television
in our house.” Just like in that Seinfeld episode, there’s a big
difference between good naked and bad naked—but that line is
subjective.

There’s no denying that nudity is a touchy subject in our culture. It
can be the deciding factor between a PG-13 and an R rating from the
MPAA, or cause for banning thongs on beaches. While the powers that
be might control what your kid sees in public, you’re in charge of
what is exposed at home. There’s no right answer, but it’s up to you
to decide, noodads:

When should your kids stop seeing you naked?

This is the latest installment in our Master Debaters Question of the
Week Series. There are some topics that seem to fall into the
consensus category: drunk driving is bad, guns kill people,
Transformers are better than GoBots. But that only covers less than 1%
of the decisions you and your spouse make towards the upbringing of
your kids. The majority of issues tend to fall more in the gray area.

Here at Noodad.com, we take pride in delivering important advice for
dads. But we realize that some of our advice is subjective. The
collected readership surely has things to add and unique perspectives
to contribute.

So where do you weigh in?

on all issues be the leader except on the nudity bit...follow the
children....when children demonstrate they want to not be seen naked
and see naked....follow them....they are privey to news and behavior
as well as adults and they hear about too much nudity and this is
where they start their apprehension about being nude and seeing
nude....nudity of ones self in public is an emotional process ...not
to be tampered with.....jz

Oh, I forgot to post my 'two cents'.

There is no reason for stopping, no one is hurt or 'damaged' by the
exposure that is a fallacy made up by people who want everyone to be
as afraid of being naked as they are.

To get some sanity back to this topic. ( When Should Your Kids Stop
Seeing You Naked? Options ). I have been equally guilty of making the
mistake that you should cover up in front of the kids because my
parents did it that way. If as a young parent I had been more
enlightened at the time I would have carried on wandering round in the
buff when it suited me in front of the children and let them decide fi
they were happy to be in the buff themselves.

To be open about being nude in the home and elsewhere when appropirate
is far healthier. The answer I feel is that you should not stop your
kids seeing you naked but you should respect their wishes if they feel
they want to cover up. As an aside it is important to set a good
example to your kids so naked or not you need to keep yourself and
them in trim.

Zee has a very valid point - within your own family and amongst
naturist friends nudity is probably regarded as completely acceptable
but if you appear nude in front of less understanding visitors and
especially their children you are crossing their boundaries even
within your own home. Outside influences can and do place guilty
connotations on innocent practices. Dan I admire your sense of
conviction and hope that it does not get you into any trouble. A
chance remark by your children could cause you bother when you have
done nothing wrong.

As a Boy Scout, Troop 475 when it was Sponsored by the East Durham
Babtist Church, East Durham, NC

The problem I have with the argument on the whole is that during the
Summers, I was a Farmboy. My family owned a farm in Orange County,
NC: and as kids, if we had to pee, we peed in the crops. Boys or
Girls. I was 9.

Little later, in the Boy Scouts, the campsites had Outhouses.
Sometimes, Camp was co-joined between the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub
Scouts, Brownies, and the like.

There wasn't a matter os seeing my elders in the nude, my elders
relieved themselves near us.

It wasn't a matter of seeing my Peers and Friends naked, at a Boy
Scout Camp where else did you clean up but in the Lake?

This thread is really uptight in my view, and much uninformed.

Of course but with reservations. Out of curiosity I checked the link
and given by Anna and read the comments mainly made by textiles but by
and large well thought out. CBHS you are talking form the viewpoint
of a naturist, as naturists we collectively feel that there should be
no need to cover up within in your own home or in appropriate outdoor
"public" settings. However whether we like it or not we do not live
in enlightened world but in a bigoted narrow minded one.

No one (including virtually all textiles) considers that is improper
in anyway for a couple to routinely wander about their own homes naked
and most couples who have no children or whose children have left home
do not lock the bathroom or attempt to shield themselves from their
partners. However few of them would appear nude in front of their
relatives (including parents and grown up children) or neighbours;
many would be acutely embarrassed if by accident they happened to seen
naked by anybody other than their partners. Single sex changing areas
are the exception.

When you come to the topic of covering up in front of your chjildren.
Virtually everyone agrees that when they are babies or pre-school it
really does not matter. Many parents find it easier and safer to
bathe with their small children. One mother said that she herself saw
no reason to cover up until the point when her child passed comment at
which point she would cover up in front of the child. There is a
difference between almost parading naked round the house which many of
us do simply because we find it more comfortable that way, especially
in warm weather and walking from the bathroom to the bedroom. or
simply being in the bedroom nude. I think that perhaps a spirit of
compromise is the best approach. My personal view is that parents
should continue to act normally through out the time their children
are with them and if they are seen naked by their children or see
their children naked (at whatever age) just act the same way as they
would as if they were clothed. Make no attempt to cover up or suggest
the other person should cover up, if your child does pass comment then
perhps be more mindful in future. If you have never tried to cover up
the chances are they will simply accept you as you are. There is no
doubt that in societies when the young are accustomed to seeing their
parents naked and having questions about sexual differences properly
explained you do have much better balanced individuals.

As to whether you should extend your nudity to all areas of the house
even to the extent of not dressing in front of visitors that is far
more contentious and you have to temper your convictions with a dash
of common sense. Your friends who know you well almost certianly
accept that for you nudity may be the norm and some of them may even
be inclined that way themselves. You have to be prepared to be
dressed when appropriate and remember that others round you do not
always share your views.

Perhaps a more diffcult question how would you handle a situation
where you child happened to see you and partner making love and tihnks
that it would be fun to join in. This happened to my wife and I once
when our 2 year old came unexpectly into the bedroom.

Euphemisms, euphemisms, and more euphemisms. That all reduces to, "I
would have been nude when I wanted to, and let the kids do the same."

Which further reduces to, "I would have had a clothing-optional home."

Is "passing comment" sort of like "passing gas"?

Why do you say "... parading naked"? Do you "parade" when nude but
not when clothed? You sound like a textile trying to make mere nudity
into something it isn't.

Why? What's "appropriate"? Who decides?

So? Aren't they equally obligated to remember that you don't share
theirs? Are you defining yourself as subordinate to textiles?

I'm having a very difficult time undersanding exactly what you're

Since when do textiles "parade in the raw" even in a locker room? All the
textiles I've ever met are too shy to be nude, even in a locker room.

The kids today won't even shower together. The boys are homophobic and are
SURE that being nude in the shower means they are gay. They'd rather STINK
all day in their classes. The girls are no better.

So what's this "parading" this article alludes to? Textiles don't parade.

And, for that matter, neither do nudists --- We PRANCE!!!

I seem to have upset some of by the use of term "parade" which perhaps
could have been put better. By parading I mean going about
unconcerned about your nudity and not really caring what others may
think. As a former textile who became a naturist I feel that I can
understand both points of view. I feel that there is viewpoint held
by many people that within a family enviroment there should be no
reason not to feel free to go certainly from the bathroom to the
bedroom naked; if you happen to seen by other family members then so
what. I also explained that that I became a naturist relatively late
in life after my children had grown up and had I been more enlightened
when younger I would have had a different lifestyle.

Perhaps the naturists who have been naturists throughout thier lives
find it difficult to empathise with the textile viewpoint which in
society is more common than ours. If you consider nudity purely
within the relative privacy of your home you take a number of
positions from one extreme to the other.

At the most prudish you even shield yourself from your partner, many
couples (well one partner anyway) only make love in the dark and
rarely see each other naked.

At the other extreme some people will not only walk naked between the
bathroom and the bedroom but spend time relaxing or doing routine
chores naked not caring who (family members or not) is around them.

Most of us probably take a position between these extremes being
mindful of the opinions of those around us. As naturists we like
being naked and are not afraid of being seen naked but few of us want
to push this ethos to the point of offending those may not share our
views. In hot weather I will spend time when in the home naked simply
because it happens to be more comfortable and I am either on my own of
with my partner; there are times both of us are naked or only one of
us. However if we were expecting visitors or answering the door we
would cover up. That does not mean that I do not believe in body
freedom but simply that I have chosen to be pragmatic about it. In an
ideal world nudity should be regarded as simply another form of dress
acceptable in many more places but we know that will never be since
the majority do not appear to share this belief.

Jenny and others I'm sure that you will demolish my posting; you have
different views which are equally worthy of debate.

The answer is simple; Never!

I get a kick reading this kind of garbage from self-anointed authority types
who believe they know what's best for the world. People like Oprah Winfrey
and Barak Obama come to mind. What's further amazing is the numbers of
human cows and sheep out there that haven't developed the brain power to
figure out what's best for them independently. These are the followers of
idiots like Oprah and Barak, who will walk over a cliff if told to.
What's the hang-up with little girls seeing daddy's dick or little boys
seeing mommy's tits? Do they not notice the family dog or the horse in the
pasture and eventually ask, what the hell is that thing? Why is it there?
Does any mom breast feed her son anymore? "Wow mom, so that's what makes
the big bumps under your sweater! Hey I remember them, you use to feed me,
and when I cried you held me to them, hugged me until I was all better."
No, instead we get a juvenile writer with a 14yr old's fixation with boobs,
and most likely an adequacy issue.

One of the first nudist couples I ever met had a 12 year old son who used to
go naked with his mom and dad to the clubs from Virginia to Florida. His
dad said the boy used to run around naked but one day decided he didn't want
to, so they didn't force him but they didn't stop being nude and taking
weekends at the clubs either. Kids should be respected and not forced into
situations where they are not comfortable, but kids should never be allowed
to gain control of their parents.

Well, see, in any other context this is called 'walking' or 'going about'
or 'not minding' or 'no big deal', and _not_ 'parading'. 'Parading' is,
anywhere else, going down the middle of the street with the aim of having
the crowd's attention, along with the rest of the festivities; which is
rather the opposite of your definition as regards caring about attention.
I don't really see why one should accept a gymnophobic idiom when it really
doesn't make any redeeming sense. Thus, one objects to the term.

Please use the term "prance" in the future. Nobody could *possibly* object,
and it draws _such_ an accurate picture.

The majority don't need to share the belief. They need only live and
let live.

But they need to be encouraged to do so. You don't appear to be
willing to encourage them.

The thing is, you aren't debating yours. You're just stating your
views -- without stating _why_ you hold the views you hold.

You didn't answer any of the questions I asked. I still don't
understand _why_ you 'believe' as you do.

Dan, is that your view or what you think Freeco's view is?

If you knew that a neighbor (or perhaps an aunt or a baby sitter) had
been vigorously brainwashing your kids to the effect that nudity was
bad-bad-bad, would you allow your kids to choose to be clothed.

Would you have allowed your kids to become Moonies, attend Moonie
services, and pass out Moonie literaturre door to door if your kids
(while still kids) had suddenly decided that was what they wanted to
do?

To me, there needs to be more of a distinction than the one you
offered. YMMV.

I've looked up the definition and I disagree - "pragmatic" is fine in
this context.

Sadly there are a lot of people who do not believe in live and let
live where nudity is concerned. I've said that I'm a naturist on
other forums which are mainly textile and the reaction varies from
live and let live to downright hostile. I happen to be quite happy to
be nude on a clothing optional beach where the majority may be clothed
and I have talked to them about why I'm a naturist including saying
how they should try it at least once.

> But they need to be encouraged to do so.  You don't appear to be

Naturism is something which I enjoy but I accept that many people will
never want to bare themselves for a variety of reasons. Of course I
want like more people to try it or at least to accept those that do.

Surely debating is stating your views then responding to others who
may win you round to their way of thinking. Before I became a
naturist I just did not appreciate why anyone should want to be naked
on a beach, yes I was curious but I had never tried it. One day on
holiday my wife and came across a nudist beach which did not know was
there and thought "Well why not". I had not expected that removing a
pair of Speedos could feel so much better but it did.

Since then I have been much less self conscious about nudity and find
I prefer to be naked more of the time than I used to. That is my
personal view and not one I expect my friends and relatives to share.
I have mentioned to friends and work colleagues that I do go nude on
the beach at times and the reaction is mixed. Some do as well, some
never will and yes most of them do think you should be free to choose
for yourself.

> You didn't answer any of the questions I asked.  I still don't

Then do I understand why you believe as you do. Being comfortable
being nude in any situation varies from person to person. As our
children get older we have to let them form their own views which may
be different to ours. My personal level of comfort in that being nude
anywhere it is accepted is fine. For me that is the locker room, the
beach (or other sunbathing/swimming venue) if clothing optional or
secluded, home alone or with my partner or even as a life model for an
artist or group of artists. If someone wants to ramble, climb or
cycle nude then whilst I would not choose to do that myself I think
that they should free ot do as they wish. I just like the feeling of
fresh air all over but I would not like the confrontation that could
come with being nude in the wrong situation.

I would be very concerned if any child under six were afraid to take
off their clothes and get wet. Not that I would make them, but I would
want to know what the heck was going on. That's common in abuse.

We have a society obsessed with models parading down a runway with all
sort of silly twists, hip shakes and stupid facial squeezes; and adult
women and men feel obligated to dress up and parade like them. We have
celebrities parading on the red carpet, across the stage, along the
avenue, voguing for the camera and everybody wants to be like them.

How fitting that it is naturists, the only remaining natural people,
who are accused of "parading" as if there was something wrong with
just being yourself.

In fact, parading around in "new" textiles or showing off how well an
outfit "matches" is one of the unchallenged ways our society creates
unhealthy images of what is important in being a woman or a man.

It will sure never be if nobody pushes the envelope. It was the same

wait for the right time. Of course the right time never comes to those

DON'T FEED THE ZEE!
You are absolutely correct again. Few days ago a stunning Teenager
walked into the local convience store, wearing a white, semi-
transparent Frock, a light, see-through Bra and Panties, and the boys
in the store: all their jaws dropped to the floor.

I'm from Miami, I knew she was dressed quite appropriately for South
Florida.
Her car Tag was from Brevard County.

Some use Naturism for their Erotic pleasures. I sometimes admit Guilt
to this too, but I'm not ashamed of admitting it, nor am I going to
allude to a shame of being aroused. Sorry, not this guy.

Mine. I think I was pretty clear about the order of what I said in the
paragraph above.

> If you knew that a neighbor (or perhaps an aunt or a baby sitter) had
> been vigorously brainwashing your kids to the effect that nudity was
> bad-bad-bad, would you allow your kids to choose to be clothed.

Of course. I have a strong belief in leading by example, not by force
or coercion. If my children are young, and I am naked, I don't think I
need to say or do anything.

> Would you have allowed your kids to become Moonies, attend Moonie
> services, and pass out Moonie literaturre door to door if your kids
> (while still kids) had suddenly decided that was what they wanted to
> do?

I strongly believe that children need to be taught to obey their elders
when they are young. What goes right along with that, is that when they
are exposed to adults with bad ideas, that they need to be protected.
My wife and I worked extremely hard to teach our children to question,
and not to accept things blindly. So it would have depended on their
age. When they got older, I would not have had a problem with it. My
children are *extremely* powerful. It might have been the end of the
Moonies!

We agree on that. And while I agree with your philosophy, I do think
one cannot always protect children from bad influences. And
situations do arise where you have to say, "You will do X" or "You

There really is no reason to stop being nude around your children.

To stop is to teach them that there is something wrong with nudism.
If you stop because they hear from someone else that there is
something wrong with nudity is to basically tell your children
"They're right, We're wrong".

I didn't do that, I never changed my ways around mine as they grew up
and the only 'difficult period' was when the girl reached puberty (or
it reached her) and she became 'modest' and started covering up more.
Her embarassment centered around the 'female problems' of puberty, but
we dealt with that 'issue' and she went back to nudism without a
problem and is a happy normal young lady, with no hang ups like other
girls her age.

In my opinion to change your practice because of your children is to
give them undue control over your life.

If your spouse didn't cause you to stop being nude, why should your
child?

For what's it's worth Dan the home situation you have described is
exactly how it should be, you seem to have raised a perfectly balanced
brood and that should be the envy of us all. I came to naturism later
in life after 2 failed relationships and when the children (2 boys)
had grown up so I'm not best qualified to answer this question.
However I totally agree with what you say. A couple who are used to
wandering about the house naked should not change their habits when
children come along and if the children question this as they get
older discuss the issue but do not change the way you are. Numerous
studies have shown that children who live in environments where they
see their parents and siblings naked without regarding it as out of
the ordinary are better balanced.

Well put.

Oh, no. Those weapons were found, so said Senator Rick Santorum in June of
2006:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2006/06/22/report-hundreds-wmds-iraq/

So don't believe what Charles Duelfer, the CIAs top weapons inspector in
Iraq, said in April of 2005 about finding nothing:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7634313/

They were finding those weapons as early as 2003. Certainly Rick Santorum
would know better than the CIA, don't you think?

But, according to the NY Times, the biggest WMD is the economy:

Anyway, I don't know Laura Ingraham. But it appears she had a show with some
organizational problems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3lCfHtaR30

but the important issue is the textiles believe both to be true....you
guys never win because you use nudist attorneys....a textile attorney

I just don't see any reason to change just because I have a child.

This is a hot thread.

I open it up and smoke wisps out of the keyboard!

The simple fact is if you go on Vacation to South (Miami) Beach, and
decide to watch the Sun rise, and you have your kids with you, they
are going to be around nude bodies in a Public setting.

I have yet to see anybody wear a Fur to the Beach in the middle of
Summer, or at anytime.

And should you be as niave as to term a 'thong' as clothing, do you
have hang-ups.

All I got to say.
