interested in some sort of connection to other lesbigay Tori fans. Also, if

I myself do *not* like the word "queer," because it implies a political
stance that not all gay/les/bi people take. The only positive thing
this term is used for is a sort of "umbrella" term for
gay/les/bi/transgendered people. Okay, okay, we've all heard the
argument before. Sigh. I actually like the term "homoamorous,"
myself. Think about it.....kinda cute, ain't it?

Hmm. I suppose I can see that. I like it because it doesn't have the
connotations of 'gay' (which gets fundies mad because we 'perverted' the
language) and because it is inclusive.

What we do need, though, is a term that can be applied exclusively to gay
men, as 'lesbian' can be applied to gay women. I object to homosexual or
gay being used because it does the same thing that the patriarchy does;
makes all the important people, the people who do things, male. How
'bout, since homo- comes from Greek (somo, the s got changed to an h...not
the latin Homo for man but the Greek homo for same), arsenahomosexual. Nah.

But it does not adequately describe bisexuals and transgendered folk, eh?

I like queer, myself - it's a nice short term (better than LesBiGay even),
people (think they) know what it means, and it encompasses many
preferences and lifestyles that tend to get lumped under the inaccurate
term "homosexual lifestyle" or worse yet, "sex perversion". I have to be
careful about using it, though, since I never know if it will offend
someone or not.

I do use that word frequently, but sometimes I think it implies

It's kinda bad, but the word "faggot" just popped into my mind. You
never hear women called that. But it's not a term that straight people
could use for gays because it's sort of an internal, esoteric slang. I
hope all of you get that idea--the same reason why some ethnic groups
call themselves names that if other ethnic groups called them would make
them upset.

Same here. I've been noticing how much lately I use it too. Hmm. I
have this culturally indoctrinated fear that my queerness shows, that I
seem gay to the average onlooker. Doh!

But I pose the querie: what makes us think that one trait is butch while
the other femme. Example: why is smoking Marlboros considered "butch"
while smoking Marlboro Lights considered "femme?" And why do we assume
that a really butch guy is a "top?" I know it shouldn't matter, but gosh
darnit, for some reason it does! Probably the fact that gay men have
their masculinity questioned at ever turn and try their hardest to make
themselves look "straight" (though see Robert the Faerie's sig file quote
on why this actually makes them look gay-as-hell!). Internalized
homophobia, perhaps. For example: I don't know why my slight
lisp-since-birth bugs the fuck out of me, but it does! People have
always assumed that I'm gay upon meeting me because of this, darnit. And
I try soooo hard to act butch, but when I speak, everything I've done is
contradicted.

Are you saying that nothing is being quoted, or that there is no
reference line?

I can answer the latter one; I get rmta-by-mail from Scott to back up
fortnet erratic feed, and sometimes I don't get a post for days after
receiving it in rbm. So, I reply to the rbm instead. It's annoying as hekk.

This is a problem that only (I think) affects people using TRN. It has
its own unique view of threading. Robert is posting using my mail2news
gateway, so there probably isn't any Reference: information available.

You've got quotes. But the best way I can describe it is by trying to
draw a thread tree, so bear with me.

The little broken off message is your message, not connected to the

do think i've heard "fem" a little more derog. than the "butch"

Kestrel, you have NO idea how much I needed that laugh. I've been feeling
low for a couple of days, the stagnation keeps piling on and I just found out

I can't tell you all how dissapointed I am... it really really stings.

My excuse? My GPA never recovered from the fall it took while my life was in

Yes, there is that problem with this strategy. However, I was hoping
it'd work the same way that last names disappear...people will respond to
mine more than the older ones, so that the older threads are phased out.
It worked though and I'm happy. :)

Hmm. I'm not even sure where the Ticketmaster is up here (if there even
is one...) I'll see though. I don't know...money is kind of tight this

Yeah, it would be cool. I have a lot of room up here, but I also have
three fundie roommates, so that is out of the question. And I know
Michelle doesn't have much room either.

Also, how long would it be? One day would prolly be best. Michelle
doesn't want to roleplay, but wouldn't mind if we did for part of the
time. The way I see it, we could do some gaming for say three or four
hours (usually the limit...attention spans and fatigue and all that),
then watch movies and stuff later. I could bring Duck Soup, 200 Motels,
and um, well, I have Logan's Run, but not the complete movie (I REALLY
want to see this again, so if everyone's willing, I think it'd be great
to rent it). We could also play cards, trivial pursuit, talisman, or
whatever else is our fancy. Ideas?

(I think Abby's place would prolly work best, btw, since it is in Boulder
[right?] so it would be central to all of us)

i both agree and disagree. it's important for gay men to define
themselves apart from others. and yes, i have heard and used fag to
describe others/myself. doesn't really work when a straight person uses
it...usually. however, the reasons for a distinct term for lesbians has
to do also with the sexism that pervades everything and for a need for
women to define themselves as distinct from their gay male counterparts.
however, i think queer is the best. a new term for everyone.

I decided to get over it and have been quite activly running amock this week.

appearence and preference change constantly, but my sexuality too. I think
intolerance (like heterosexism and homophobia OR heterophobia and homosexism)
derives from these defnitions. I try to express myself without any restrictions
and allow myself to change my views whenever necessary. i do understand your
point though, sometimes I too am able to rate my femininity/masculinity and
heterosexuality/homosexuality but it is just for fun and nothing permanent.

The point isn't who you're attracted to, the point is the labels
themselves are evil. It's an excuse for people to write you off without
knowing anything else about you. Labels encourage that.

Well, not that I do find them attractive or anything, but I can explain
why they're sometimes "fetished."
1) Authoritarian fantasies.
2) Stereotyped masculinity.
3) Doing it with someone you're not "supposed" to do it with (cop,
fireman, etc).

But Robert is the one who is saying he's a homosexual. No one
else is telling him that he's gay. Now I think labels are
wrong if you look at someone and say "oh, he's a [whatever]"
without knowing him and not getting to know him because you
think he's something. So you're saying that if I'm to call
myself a teenage girl (which is true) that I would be wrong in
labelling myself like that? What if I wanted to say I was a
coffee mug? Would that be wrong of me? There is a difference
between what you choose to say you are and what other people
say you are. Labels aren't wonderful things, but as humans, I
think we need them. We classify everything...this doesn't mean
we have to go separate ourselves into groups...it is just
another way to identify ourselves.

Heh. Actually, the Navy is the only branch of the military where men
DON'T look good in uniform. At least not the enlisted men.

Yeah, I find that aspect of them creepy too. But there's just something
about the uniform...Dan mentioned several reasons (and I want to
reply to his, but the post hasn't reached fortnet yet!)...it's an
expression of maleness. Besides, it gives me pleasantly malevolent feelings
reading some of the alt.sex.stories.gay stories where two men make out in the
middle of camp, or whatnot...perverting that het ideal. BWAHAHAHA!!!

wow...i'm quite impressed. when i first saw this thread pop
up in discussion i thought *damn...there'll be flamers here,
i shouldn't even bother looking*...i'm SO glad that i was
wrong!

i see so few discussions amongst gays and bisexuals that
aren't bombarded by rude, ignorant homophobes...with
their teeth bared and snarling.

any-who....

i've probably been bi all me life. when i look back, now,
i realize that there were a few girls i had had crushes
on...of course, i didn't realize they were crushes back
then...where i grew up, that wasn't an OPTION.

and, to get back on the topic....

Well, these are pretty much the same thing. Our society equates
authority with masculinity.

Personally, the one aspect of men in uniform that turns me on is the fact

Just a random thought still on the subject.
At the 7 pm Detroit concert, my male heterosexual friend and I sat next to
two other guys.
We didn't think anything of it, seeing as we could have also easily looked
gay.
But, afterwards, my friend told me that he overheard one say to the other,
"Tori Amos music turns me on. Let's go back to my place."
I found this both cute and amusing.
I would have felt the same though if it was a guy and a girl.
Just a fun little anecdote.

Argue for your limitations, and they are yours. : )

Here's the Theory:
Labels can be fine, but they can also be personally limiting and
damaging. After all, these are labels that were taught to us, the
criteria were taught to us. Little kids who say, "I'm a winner" are
echoing the lessons of others just as little kids who say, "I'm a loser"
are. Declaring yourself a homosexual is fine, depending on what you mean
by it. If you mean, "So far in my life, I have been sleeping with others
of the same sex, and I am not at this time attracted to members of the
opposite sex," you're open. In this case, not being open limits only
you. But that's not true in every circumstance, and even beyond that,
you run into the fact that language is a shifting signifier and what
your label means to you may not be what your label means to me. If you
identify yourself to me by saying, for example, "I'm a conservative,"
you may be thinking, "I don't believe we should have much involvement
with foreign government and I believe the government should be involved
in our lives as little as possible." I may be hearing, "I don't believe
in freedom of choice, and I think people should be made to pray in
school." Strike one against labels. They preclude genuine conversation
by limiting us to cliches that have variant significance. Labels also
become battling grounds in and of themselves. Am I a victim of child
abuse or a survivor of child abuse? Why has negro/negroid become a
hurtful term? Why do so many feminists battle over the use of the
general pronoun "he"? Why did Sojourner Truth ask, "Ain't I a Woman?"
Why did Denise Riley ponder, "Am I That Name?" Because labels are far
more than simple catagories--they are inclusive and exclusive by
definition, confining rather than liberating. They are boxes, and, while
they can be used to forge identity, they can also be used to freeze it.
If the label you've embraced for yourself is a destructive one, like
"Stupid," they can destroy you inside.

The fact:
Or at least as I see it. Labels are necessary and can be used
constructively as points of entry to conversation rather than walls.
Unfortunately, many people we encounter in our lives will only see them
as walls. The fact that I am a Christian automatically closes doors on
me that might not be closed if people took the time to learn what
Christianity means to me, who I really am (and some of those doors would
remain closed but for legitimate rather than superficial reasons).
Similarly, the fact that I am of mixed race closes doors for me all
around (a label I wear on my face, no less, and one I could not change).
Labels can be very valuable. But use them carefully. They are also one
of the foundational building blocks of hate.

I agree that labels are (for the most part) intensely evil, but I
think that if a person feels comfortable labelling (and thus defining)
him/herself, then s/he has a right. And you just have to go with it.

yeah, i never really figured out the bi thing until later. i never
picked up the bigotry my parents taught me about gays, but i really did
think it was either/or. i didn't think of my girl crushes in the same
light at all, i figured if i liked boys then i was straight. so i was in
for a pleasant surprise... :)

Really? Wow. Except for Andy and the thread xposted to the boulder and
CO newsgroups, there haven't been any homophobes posting here. In fact,
I still haven't received any hate mail for being gay. Pretty cool, huh?

Well, I was looking back in my middle school yearbook, and i had

Actually, no, I'm not very fond of the word 'penis' at all. However, it
is a scientific word, so that makes it okay (but then, pecs is derived

into my temples that being heterosexual is the proper and good way to be

this is something i've never heard of. but then i guess i don't hang
around with people who would say that sort of thing. breast men are just
fine by me, but i tend to avoid dating them. i wish i could find a
balance, someone who will pay proper attention to my breasts but can look
me in the eye at least once a week....i've found a few of those, but
they're pretty rare.

I like suits, but there are some requirements:

A) They can't be shiny.
B) They can't be too tight, or too loose, or too plaid.

That's about it. I like suits. Not all the time, but once in a while. In
fact, the other day I went job-huting, and wore a blue oxford shirt, with
my dad's red tie and a navy blue vest and jeans. I looked *good* if I do

I totally agree. I had a really strange dream about Coolio a few months
