Commentary: whew! Many close races in the heavyweight division,
including one tiebreaker and six one-point margins. This is the part
of the contest where big names start to drop against even stronger
competition; notably we are bidding farewell to Marvin Gaye, AC/DC,
Skynyrd, Billy Joel, Deep Purple, and both of Patti Boyd's sweeties,
along with Tom Petty from the tough opening matchup. The other
hard-luck award of the round goes to Graham Parker who loses a
tiebreaker to the Stones and a 2-pointer to Bob Seger. Of other acts
with 2 discs entering the round, Grand Funk and Burning Spear also
suffer a double defeats, while Southside Johnny, Ry Cooder, Van Der
Graaf Generator, Waylon Jennings, The Residents, and Robert Palmer all
win one and lose one. Four acts manage to put two discs forward into
the final 64: Seger, Wings, Thin Lizzy, and Parliament (who actually
advance 3 if you include the Funkadelic variation). Joe Walsh also
advances in both his solo and Eagles jackets.
Musically the contest has been nearly stripped of reggae discs which
had come into the round strong; only Peter Tosh's disc manages to
smoke its competition. The last vestiges of fusion, the other big
'76 genre trend, also fade away as Herbie Hancock, Jeff Beck, and
Chick Corea leave. We enter round three (posted soon) heavy on funk,
proto-punk, and lots of radio-friendly spunk.

I was keeping track of that one myself, and here was my tally:
Gallagher - 1111111111111111 (16)
Roncrap - 111111111111 (12)
So those 5 additional dumbshit votes that placed her ahead must have
been sent to him privately. Funny enough, I noticed how most of the
posted votes for her were within the first 20 ballots cast to that
thread (before most of this group's better-informed members started
weighing in.) It's as if her remaining sympathizers lost their
confidence and were too embarrassed to voice their feelings out in the
open.>:(~

In this case, I must direct shame on two people:
1) Tamanend (again), this time for not abstaining. In a prior Survivor
(I think it was 1978) he said "Linda, I love your liberal politics, but
your music is much too conservative for me."
2) A certain R&B lover (whose name I won't mention) who went with Linda
because 1) he had no clue who Gallagher was and 2) he was merely
lending agreement to his girlfriend (also a poster.)

A real shame. Both "Blackheart Man" and "Reggae Got Soul" are both
classics--and both, incidentally, better than the Tosh album. Of the
ex-Wailers, aside from Marley, Tosh got a lot of attention because he
was recording duets with people like Mick Jagger, but in the reaggae
world he's far less important than Bunny Wailer. Oh, well. My interest
just sagged.

There's still some interesting roots music surviving...Cooder, etc.
Gee, I wonder who you mean.
Fisrt off, I bought all of Ronstadt's singles around this time, and
never liked anything by Gallagher. Secondly, Diane and I disagreed on
lots of matchups.
She voted for the Eagles, I voted for Petty.
She voted for Cooder, I voted for 10CC
She voted for Toots, I voted for Rundgren
Your accusation is totally baseless.

Travesty. But again, Rory is from the UK, so...

NOT! a debut album by AC/DC, as I pointed out. Only in the US. Here in
Australia they already had two albums by '76. Still, they should have
won here...
