The final list of competitors for the 1979 Album Survivor tournament has been
determined. Thanks to everyone who nominated albums for the competition. All
nominees were included in the final list.

The final list consists of 382 significant Rock, Pop, and R&B albums released
in 1979. This means that in order to have the required first round of 256
albums, 130 albums will receive byes to the first round while the remaining 252
albums battle it out in a preliminary round.

An album automatically received a bye if it met one or more of the following
criteria:

- It peaked within the top 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart;
- It contained one of the top 20 singles of the year based on the American Top
40 year-end countdown list;
- It appeared on Dave Marsh's list of the top 40 albums for the year;
- It appeared on Robert Christgau's list of the top 30 albums for the year;
- It appeared on the Village Voice critics' list of the top 20 albums for the
year;
- It appeared on the Melody Maker critics' list of the top 20 albums for the
year;
- It appeared on the New Music Express critics' list of the top 30 albums for
the year;
- It was one of the top 45 albums for the year at the Acclaimed Music website;
- It appeared in the top 25 albums for the year at the rateyourmusic website.

Additional bye slots were filled with albums that received the most
nominations/seconds in the recent nomination process (generally this took at
least two seconds).

The preliminary round will be split into two halves; the first half of the
prelims will be posted later today.

Indeed. I moved it to the '78 list but failed to remove it from '79. Thanks
for the catch.

Okay, Bob Marley - Survival gets the next bye and the prelim slot that Bob
was in will be filled by something else.
