I agree. I'd choose 1971, then 1970.
Ray Arthur
Yup, 1971.

How do they determine what year something should be ranked on that site?
Miles Davis' "Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965" was recorded in 1965
(obviously!), but released in North America in 1982. It may have been
released in Japan earlier though I'm not sure.
Definitely 1971
What do you perceive as the "pop/rock era?"
I would agree that 1976 was probably the worst year between 1950 and
1985.
Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" and Bob Seger's "Night Moves" are two
of the best albums of '76. ELO's "A New World Record" is also not bad.
1976 also has a lot of one-hit wonders :)
Let's see what RYM shows for 1976:

I guess they have "Mothership Connection" as 1975, although I've seen
it listed as '75 and as '76. Definitely recorded in '75, but dubious if
it was released before the start of '76.
The only songs fron this year in my top 100 for the 70s are:
39 ¦ Blitzkreig Bop ¦ Ramones
64 ¦ Do Ya ¦ ELO
93 ¦ The Fire Down Below ¦ Bob Seger
Here's their top 100:>
Yech- yep, bad year. The only ones I prefer are-
8 Aerosmith: Rocks
13 Thin Lizzy: Jailbreak
16 Rush: 2112
20 Boston: Boston
38 Kansas: Leftoverture
39 Queen: A Day at the Races

Thanks for posting that link; it reminds me of that awful year's saving
grace (for me)--Warren Zevon's debut album.
They list "The Modern Lovers" and "Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers" as
two different albums; is that correct?
DianeE
I find the ones below good, and listenable...
( Contrary to others, surprise :-), I find 1976 not a bad
year... )

You should definitely check out Have Moicy! -- a lot of great stuff,
including "Jealous Daddy's Death Song" ("I'm telling you boys -- don't
you monkey with my widow when I'm gone") and "Slurf Song" (my fave)
which ends with the life cycle of a spaghetti dinner, including a trip
to the outhouse and, reluctantly, on to the sink: "Oh I see the dishes
over there, they fill me with despair."

No surprsie that there's plenty of good soul/disco/R & B albums that
are not here, as they are probably not even entered into the site's
datebase.
No.

That was just a sidelight after I saw the list.

No, I said that I agreed that it was "the worst" year for music between
1950 and 1985.
It's a "great" year compared to any year since 1989.
Some soul/disco items that I don't see on there (it's a big list, maybe
I missed something here)
Disco Inferno - Trammps
The Manhattans (featuring "Kiss And Say Goodbye")
O'Jays - Message In The Music
Ohio Players - Contradiction
Johnnie Taylor - Eargasm
Isley Brothers - Harvest For The World
KC & The Sunshine Band - Part 3
Commodores - Hot On The Tracks
Brick - Good High
Stylistics - Fabulous
Gloria Gaynor - I've Got You
Blue Magic - Mystic Dragons
Also missing is "That's Where The happy People Go" by the Trammps,
which the site erroneously has in 1977.
And 1974 kinda sucked for music.
1979.
Back To The Egg, Off The Wall, the first two Joe Jackson albums, Armed
Forces, London Calling, The B-52s, Repeat When Necessary...
The release of 'Deep Purple In Rock' and the 'Woodstock' album.

Thinking of browsing local stores to see if there's any re-releases
Anyone with info on recent releases of top albums from 1971?
Thanks.
iTunes ought to start downloads for albums of the 1960s and 1970s --
at bargain prices - say $3.99 each for most albums, $6.99 for hit
albums (top 20 Billboard list)
If I say that Candy Cummings is the worst player out of 200 or so hall
of famers, does that mean that he's a bad baseball player?

I'll let you know when you've heard even one of them.
Oh come now... In those days we had joy, we had fun. We had seasons in the
sun!
Hmm, now that you mention it, you may be right.

Although I try not to deviate from the '60's & '70's, I have to admit, I
picked up a Joe Jackson's greatest hits CD, recently. He was/is pretty
good, IMO.

But, um, "Marquee Moon" came out in '77.

1970
?
After The Gold Rush
Abraxas ("Samba Pa Ti" - one of my top 10 all-time favorite tracks)
Workingman's Dead
Moondance
American Beauty
also:
Ladies Of The Canyon
Alone Togther
John Barleycorn Must Die
Cosmo's Factory
Let It Be
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Sweet Baby James
All Things Must Pass
Live At Leeds
Bryter Layter
Woodstock
Full House (Fairport Convention - 3/4 of a very good album)
-L.I.
Blondie's debut HEART OF GLASS
I'd say it was very good year (no song title pun intended) for music
1974 would easily be my pick, and you didn't even list most of my
favourite albums:
Big Star's "Radio City" (winner of the Survivor contest)
John Cale's "Fear" and "Slow Dazzle"
Faust's "IV"
Nico's "The End"
Richard & Linda Thompson's "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight"
Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom"
I'd also add:
Blue Oyster Cult's "Secret Treaties"
Matthew Fisher's "I'll Be There"
T. Rex's "Zinc Alloy & The Hidden Riders of Tomorrow"
-------------------------------------
Ah, you're right. I've been habitually calling it a '74 release without
bothering to check the label. '75 was the year he put out two albums.

How about 130 years of major league baseball. If we take the worst
player who ever played in the major leagues, that does not mean that he
is a bad baseball player. Do you understand the level that these
players attained, and the level that musicians who had releases in 1976
attained?
The worst charted hit of 1976 is 100 times better than the best thing
that an ameteur like you has ever played.
1970. 1971 a very close second. Then 1977.
Greg
1. Ramones: Ramones
19 Camel: Moonmadness
27 Bob Marley: Rastaman Vibration
28 The Flamin' Groovies: Shake Some Action
37 Graham Parker: Howlin' Wind
50 Heart: Dreamboat Annie
51 Graham Parker: Heat Treatment
61 AC/DC: Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap [AUS]
62 10cc: How Dare You!
77 Magma: Üdü Wüdü
86 Manfred Mann's Earth Band: The Roaring Silence
87 Be Bop Deluxe: Modern Music
90 Be Bop Deluxe: Sunburst Finish
98 Jon Anderson: Olias of Sunhillow
Lots of real disappointments among the rest of the list.
Sure, there were albums from '76 I adored that weren't on the list. but it
was a very very weak year.
> The only songs fron this year in my top 100 for the 70s are:
> 39 ¦ Blitzkreig Bop ¦ Ramones
> 64 ¦ Do Ya ¦ ELO
> 93 ¦ The Fire Down Below ¦ Bob Seger
And Do Ya is a remake of an old Move song. I prefer the original.

Hmmm -- two of the albums I dislike the most intensely from the 70s. In '78
I was listening to British New Wave stuff.
Greg
Tapestry - Carole King
Sticky Fingers - Rolling Stones
Whos Next - Who
Every Picture tells a story - Rod Stewart
