Album Survivor game. A total of 40 ballots were cast; not all voters
made choices in every matchup. Thanks to all who voted! In case of
ties the number of prior votes is the tiebreaker; albums that received
byes into this round are credited with the average vote count of
winning albums from the prelims.

Commentary: Lesser albums from big names including Zeppelin,
Crosby-Nash, Dylan, the Allmans, and Santana fail to advance. Several
potential sleepers score solid points including the Tchoupitoulas, the
Residents, and Leon Redbone. Of acts with two discs in this
half-round, Thin Lizzy and the VDDG advance both, Zep and the Trammps
split, and Sun Ra fails to shine in either.
Note 1: The Outlaws album turns out to be ineligible and will not
advance; the Gordon Lightfoot album will be re-seeded in the second
part of Round 1 and this opens up another slot for an album that was
originally eliminated in the prelims; the lucky dog this time is Jaco
Pastorius - Jaco Pastorious.

I'd sure like somebody to comment on this Pablo album, and also the
Wild Tchoupitoulas disc; these are completely off my radar screen and
yet seem to have rather strong support, both critically and in the
voting so far (particularly the Tchoupitoulas).

The Augustus Pablo album is intrumental reggae, played on a melodica--a
plastic child's toy, really--and absolutely haunting. Pablo was a
reggae producer and one of the forefathers of dub.
The WTs are actually the Neville Brothers in their first and legendary
joint recording. Seminal New Orleans stuff.

Pablo and King Tubby are associated with dub music (instrumentals of popular
reggae songs). Though many reggae artists were more popular, I think that
classic 70's dub music, especially from Lee "Scratch" Perry as well as this
release, get to the essence of Jamaican music.

Although I think large portions of this article are hornswoggle, for
instance describing later Marley albums as "overproduced" -- come on,
let's get some perspective here -- the central question about the
Marley legacy is a valid one.

It's the slightly snobbish equivalent of saying, for example, that the
really good Elvis records are the ones he made for Sun. Which, of
course, is perfectly true, but still a form of one-upmanship. Marley's
style (and politics) changed as his audience grew and changed. Which is
what happens to almost all successful musicians.

It's a bit higher than typical in early rounds for the past few
contests; in middle rounds we have been edging close to 50 votes
recently.
