Okay, here's the preliminary round matchups for the Battle Of The Albums from
1969 (or Survivor if you prefer).

There are 83 matchups here, 166 albums in all. Vote for one album in each
matchup. If you want you can abstain from voting in some matchups if you don't
know the albums well enough or something. The easiest way to vote is to just
copy the album that you are voting for without copying the album that it is up
against. To be sure I get your votes, click on the e-mail box too when you post
your picks.

The 83 winners will move on along with the 45 albums that got byes, and those
128 albums will be matched up for the first round. As in the 1972 version of
this, if there's a tie, I'll drop my vote out and the other album will move on.

> Alice Cooper - Pretties For You vs. Bubble Puppy - A Gathering Of Promises

Oooh -- a tough one right off the bat. Not my favourite early Alice, so I
vote for Bubble Puppy.

Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry
Nazz - Nazz Nazz
>

> Three Dog Night - Three Dog Night vs. Zager & Evans - 2525 (Exordium &
> Terminus)

Ugh. I'll vote for Zager and Evans so that they get at least one vote.

>A Group Called Smith

> Jack Bruce - Songs For A Tailor vs. Kaleidascope - Kaleidascope

Also a tough one. This is my favourite Bruce solo album, so it gets a
somewhat reluctant vote.

>Edwin Starr - 25 Miles

> Canned Heat - Hallelujah
> Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On

> Neil Diamond - Touching Me, Touching You
> Spirit - The Family That Plays Together vs. Tom Jones - Help Yourself

Hmmm. I listened to this Spirit album a couple of weeks back and was
surprised to find I don't actually much like it. I'm voting for Tom.

> Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis

> Sha Na Na - Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay

> Joni Mitchell - Clouds

> Donovan - Barabajagal
> Box Tops - Dimensions

> Cold Blood - Cold Blood
> Frank Sinatra - My Way

> Spooky Tooth - Spooky Two

> Savoy Brown - A Step Further

> Mountain - Leslie West-Mountain
> Kinks - Arthur

> Dick Hyman - Moog-The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman vs. Illusion - The
> Illusion

I almost voted for Illusion thinking it was the British band -- but they
came later. I'll vote for Hyman.

> Association - Goodbye Columbus (Soundtrack)

> Lettermen - Hurt So Bad
> Oliver - Good Morning Starshine

> Rod Stewart - The Rod Stewart Album

> John Lennon - Wedding Album

> Guess Who - Canned Wheat Packed By The Guess Who

> Bee Gees - Odessa
> Charley Pride - The Sensational Charley Pride vs. George Harrison -
Wonderwall
> Music

This one made me stop and think, too. Probably Harrison's weakest album, and
there are SOME Charley Pride recordings I like. I haven't played this Pride
record a whole lot of times, but I've liked it when I have. I'll vote for
Charley.

> Joan Baez - Any Day Now (double album) vs. Love - Four Sail

This one's tough, too. I played the Baez album to death in 69/70, but later
grew to love the Love album. I'll vote for Joan out of nostalgia.

> Paul Revere & Raiders - Hard 'N' Heavy

> Tom Jones - This Is Tom Jones vs. Watts 103rd Streeet Rhythm Band - In The
> Jungle, Babe

Yikes -- I have to vote for Tom Jones again. Never expected to vote for him
once, let alone twice.

> Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendocino

> Monkees - Instant Replay

> Ike & Tina Turner - Outta Season

> Deep Purple - The Book Of Taliesyn
> B.B. King - Live And Well

> Grand Funk Railroad - On Time
>

> Love - Out Here vs. Pearls Before Swine - These Things Too

Well, Love lost the toss-up the first time so I'll go with them this time.
Two really strong albums.

> Vogues - Till
> Rascals - Freedom Suite vs. Ventures - Swamp Rock

Voting for the Rascals in this toss-up becuase I'm voting for another
Ventures album later.

> Meters - The Meters
> Bobby Sherman - Bobby Sherman vs. Edwin Hawkins Singers - Let Us Go Into
The
> House Of The Lord

Never expected to vote for Bobby Sherman, either, but I will here.

>There are 83 matchups here, 166 albums in all. Vote for one album in each
>matchup.

Here's my votes.

>Alice Cooper - Pretties For You vs. Bubble Puppy - A Gathering Of Promises

Have to go for Bubble Puppy here. Loved the "School's Out" album, but didn't
like much else by AC.

>James Gang - Yer' Album vs. Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry

James Gang gets my vote here. Nyro should stick to writing.

>Nazz - Nazz Nazz vs. Spirit - Clear Spirit

Gotta go with Spirit.

>Three Dog Night - Three Dog Night vs. Zager & Evans - 2525 (Exordium &
>Terminus)

3DN Easy here.

>Nancy Wilson - Hurt So Bad vs. Smith - A Group Called Smith

Smith here, they did the best version of "Baby It's You." I was surprised that
this album charted so big (# 17 - 28 weeks)

>Jack Bruce - Songs For A Tailor vs. Kaleidascope - Kaleidascope

Kaleidascope is the choice

>Brian Auger & the Trinity - Steeetnoise (double album) vs. Edwin Starr - 25
>Miles

I know the Auger was a big cult favorite, but I'll take Edwin Starr here.

>Archies - Everything's Archie vs. Canned Heat - Hallelujah

Probably the toughest choice for me in this round. As much as I like blues and
Canned Heat, this album did not contain any of the songs that I really liked,
so I'm going with the Archies here.

>Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On vs. Jay & Americans - Sands Of Time

Tough one, I liked "This Magic Moment," but not anything else that J & A ever
did. I'll go with FM.

>Lee Michaels - Lee Michaels vs. Neil Diamond - Touching Me, Touching You

Neil it is.

>Spirit - The Family That Plays Together vs. Tom Jones - Help Yourself

I like some of Tom's hits, but "I Got A Line On You" is a real good record,
I'll go with Spirit.

>Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis vs. James Brown - Say It Loud, I'm
>Black
>And I'm Proud

Very tough matchup. Elvis takes it.

>Sha Na Na - Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay vs. Young-Holt Unlimited - Soulful
>Strut

I liked Sha-Na-Na when I first discovered 50's stuff, but that didn't last long
- YHU takes this one.

>Joni Mitchell - Clouds vs. Muddy Waters - Fathers And Sons (Live)

MW easy

>Donovan - Barabajagal vs. Iron Butterfly - Ball

Donovan, no contest

>Barbra Steisand - What About Today vs. Box Tops - Dimensions

Sorry Babs, "Soul Deep" is one of my favorite singles of '69, Box Tops take
this.

>Aretha Franklin - Soul '69 vs. Cold Blood - Cold Blood

"You Got Me Hummin' was okay, but Aretha takes this.

>Frank Sinatra - My Way vs. Jefferson Airplane - Bless Its Pointed Little Head
>(live)

"My Way" is not a favorite, but I don't like JA much, and I don't like live
albums much, so Frank gets the nod.

>Les McCann - Swiss Movement vs. Nilsson - Harry

Harry hits

>Spooky Tooth - Spooky Two vs. Tom Jones - Live In Las Vegas

ST

>Savoy Brown - A Step Further vs. Winstons - Color Him Father

SB was pretty good, and they made that great rockabilly album as Warren
Phillips and the Rockets, but I'm going with Winstons here.

>Johnny Winter - Second Winter vs. Mountain - Leslie West-Mountain

Don't like LW & M at all, JW takes this.

>Kinks - Arthur vs. Neil Diamond - Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show

Screw this artsy Kinks stuff, I'll take Neil

>Dick Hyman - Moog-The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman vs. Illusion - The
>Illusion

Illusion easy, I still have the album too.

>Association - Goodbye Columbus (Soundtrack) vs. Bobby Vinton - I Love How You
>Love Me

Sorry Bobby.

>Carla Thomas - Memphis Queen vs. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

CT easy

>Jerry Butler - Ice On Ice vs. Lettermen - Hurt So Bad

ROFL!!!!!!! JB of course.

>Oliver - Good Morning Starshine vs. Steppenwolf - At Your Birthday party

I liked "GMS" a lot, but I had the Steppenwolf album and liked a few things on
it, Step it is.

>Rod Stewart - The Rod Stewart Album vs. Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude

I've got the WP album, but I really didn't like when he remade rock records,
I'm going with RS here.

>John Mayall - The Turning Point vs. Moby Grape - Moby Grape '69

JM

>Yes - Yes - Atlantic 8243 vs. Herbie Mann - Memphis Underground

Don't like hardly anything by Yes except for "Roundabout," Mann gets the nod.

>Association - The Association - WB 1300 vs. Blues Image - Blues Image

"Ride, Cpatain, Ride" was good, but I remember thinking the rest of the album
sucked. I never thought anything by the Association sucked, so they get it.

>Chambers Brothers - Love, Peace And Happiness (live double album) vs. Friends
>Of Distinction - Grazin'

FOD for sure

>Spiral Starecase - More Today Than Yesterday vs. Three Dog Night - Suitable
>For
>Framing

Very tough one, but I loved "More Today Than Yesterday," I'll go with the SS.

>Jethro Tull - This Was vs. Little Milton - Grits Ain't Groceries

LM

>Otis Redding - Love Man vs. Steppenwolf - Monster

OR

>Richie Havens - Richard P. Havens, 1983 vs. Watts 103rd Streeet Rhythm Band -
>Together

Never thought much of RH, the Watts band takes it.

>John Lennon - Wedding Album vs Mike Bloomfield - Live Adventures Of Mike
>Bloomfield & Al Kooper

ANYTHING is better than this Lennon album.

>David Peel & The Lower East Side - Have A Marijuana vs. Guess Who - Canned
>Wheat Packed By The Guess Who

Guess?

>B.B. King - Completely Well vs. Bee Gees - Odessa

I liked the Bee Gees then, but Riley wins this.

>Charley Pride - The Sensational Charley Pride vs. George Harrison -
>Wonderwall
>Music

CP

>Joan Baez - Any Day Now (double album) vs. Love - Four Sail

JB

>Paul Revere & Raiders - Hard 'N' Heavy vs. Steve Miller Band - Brave New
>World

Never heard the Miller, but I know that I like a couple of things on the
Raiders album for sure

>Tom Jones - This Is Tom Jones vs. Watts 103rd Streeet Rhythm Band - In The
>Jungle, Babe

TJ

>Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendocino vs. Zephyr - Zephyr

SDQ

>Monkees - Instant Replay vs. Ray Stevens - Gitarzan

I liked "Teardrop City" but I also liked "Gitarzan" back then. The Stevens
album has overdubbed fake live shit and a few remakes of his older hits, so I'm
going Monkees here.

>Ike & Tina Turner - Outta Season vs. Johnnie Taylor - Who's Making Love

JT

>Bob Seger System - Ramblin' Gamblin' Man vs. Deep Purple - The Book Of
>Taliesyn

BS - Anything to remove "Taliesyn" from these rolls :-)

>B.B. King - Live And Well vs. Country Joe & The Fish - Here We Are Again

BB

>Grand Funk Railroad - On Time vs. Joe Simon - The Chokin' Kind

JS

>Love - Out Here vs. Pearls Before Swine - These Things Too

Abstain here.

>Steve Miller Band - Your Saving Grace vs. Vogues - Till

The Vogues records from '69 were all putrid, SM takes it.

>Rascals - Freedom Suite vs. Ventures - Swamp Rock

Ventures

>James Brown - It's A Mother vs. Meters - The Meters

JB

>Bobby Sherman - Bobby Sherman vs. Edwin Hawkins Singers - Let Us Go Into The
>House Of The Lord

I didn't dislike the Sherman stuff that much, but the EHS takes this.

>Johnny Winter - The Progressive Blues Experiment vs. NRBQ - NRBQ (Columbia
>9858)

NRBQ

>Barbra Streisand - Hello Dolly! (soundtrack) vs. Cowsills - The Cowsills In
>Concert

Can't bring myself to vote for Babs, I'll go Cowsills with "Hair."

>Grass Roots - Leaving It All Behind vs. Joe South - Introspect

Tough one. As much as I like thr Roots, I think the South is a better "album."

>Mary Hopkin - Post Card vs. Peter, Paul & Mary - Peter, Paul And Mommy

Another tough one. I'll go with MH.

>Stevie Wonder - For Once In My Life vs. Tommy Roe - Dizzy

Sorry Stevie, but I'm taking Roe here.

>Rare Earth - Get Ready vs. Ventures - Hawaii 5-O

RE

Tammy

>Temptations - Puzzle People vs. Three Dog Night - Captured Live At The Forum

TYA

>Andy Williams - Happy Heart vs. Booker T. & MG's - Uptight

I sent my votes in by e-mail, I'll just restrict myself to some comments
here in the ng (I figure another list of choices isn't going to benefit
anybody...).

Boy, using the charts rather than poster suggestions sure leads to some
weird entries, doesn't it? I mean, Dick Hyman playing Moog? And I'm as
diehard a proponent of the solo Beatles work as you'll find, but even I
thought it was weird to have those "experimental" Lennon albums and
Wonderwall Music in there. Nonetheless, I voted for two of the three. I
also voted for one of the Andy Williams albums just because it was a
favorite of my mom's back when she actually owned a turntable.

Still, it would be nice for future rounds to take some nominated
non-charted titles too. I know you ended up adding a couple in, but you
could ask for nominees a couple of days before.

The toughest choices to make: Rod Stewart over Wilson Pickett and Peter
Paul & Mary over Mary Hopkin (her later album, Earth Song Ocean Song, is
better).

Man, how many albums did the Temptations make in 1969? B^)

My favorite of all the albums up for vote, by far, is Dimensions by the
Box Tops. Note, however, that that is NOT counting the many classic
albums that were given byes.

No, I'm just going to stay with what we've got. After this I'll work backwards
and go to '68.

>How were the byes determined?

I mentioned in another post, the byes were determined by me, choosing albums
that I thought were most likely to do well with the voters and/or were huge
hits at the time.

Once the next round starts there will be 128 albums alive and an album will
have to win 7 matchups to become the eventual champion.

What is a "bye" exactly?

> As in the 1972 version of this, if there's a tie, I'll drop my

[THE VOTING BEGINS.]

> Alice Cooper - Pretties For You vs. Bubble Puppy - A Gathering Of
> Promises

My vote goes to "Pretties For You", one of the most creative albums
of all time. "A Gathering Of Promises" had a great single in "Hot
Smoke And Sassafras", but the rest of the album is mediocre.

> James Gang - Yer' Album vs. Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry

Close, but I'm going with "New York Tendaberry" as it has more
literate lyrics.

> Nazz - Nazz Nazz vs. Spirit - Clear Spirit

Two strong albums, but "Clear Spirit" is the superior of the two.

> Three Dog Night - Three Dog Night vs. Zager & Evans - 2525
> (Exordium & Terminus)

"Three Dog Night". Almost anything is better than Zager & Evans.

> Nancy Wilson - Hurt So Bad vs. Smith - A Group Called Smith

"A Group Called Smith".

> Jack Bruce - Songs For A Tailor vs. Kaleidascope - Kaleidascope

"Kaleidoscope".

> Brian Auger & the Trinity - Steetnoise vs. Edwin Starr - 25 Miles

Abstain.

> Archies - Everything's Archie vs. Canned Heat - Hallelujah

"Hallelujah". No contest.

> Fleetwood Mac - Then Play On vs. Jay & Americans - Sands Of Time

"Sands Of Time". This was their attempt at competing with Zappa's
"Crusing With Ruben And The Jets" from the previous year.

> Lee Michaels - Lee Michaels vs. Neil Diamond - Touching Me,
> Touching You

"Lee Michaels". Excellent keyboards and percussion work. In fact,
it's all organ and drums.

> Spirit - The Family That Plays Together vs. Tom Jones - Help
> Yourself

"The Family That Plays Together". No competition here.

> Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis vs. James Brown - Say It
> Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud

This is a close one, but I'm going with "Say It Loud".

> Sha Na Na - Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay vs. Young-Holt
> Unlimited - Soulful Strut

"Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay".

> Joni Mitchell - Clouds vs. Muddy Waters - Fathers And Sons

"Fathers And Sons". I like Joni better when she reaches her jazz
and electronic periods.

> Donovan - Barabajagal vs. Iron Butterfly - Ball

"Ball".

> Barbra Steisand - What About Today vs. Box Tops - Dimensions

"Dimensions".

> Aretha Franklin - Soul '69 vs. Cold Blood - Cold Blood

Abstain.

> Frank Sinatra - My Way vs. Jefferson Airplane - Bless Its
> Pointed Little Head

"Bless Its Pointed Little Head". One of the greatest live albums
of the 1960s.

> Les McCann - Swiss Movement vs. Nilsson - Harry

Abstain.

> Spooky Tooth - Spooky Two vs. Tom Jones - Live In Las Vegas

Abstain.

> Savoy Brown - A Step Further vs. Winstons - Color Him Father

Abstain.

> Johnny Winter - Second Winter vs. Mountain - Leslie West -
> Mountain

"Second Winter".

> Kinks - Arthur vs. Neil Diamond - Brother Love's Traveling
> Salvation Show

Abstain.

> Dick Hyman - Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman vs.
> Illusion - The Illusion

"Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman". I've used just about
every model of Moog synthesizer ever made. One of my old Minimoogs
is in a video with Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.

> Association - Goodbye Columbus (Soundtrack) vs. Bobby Vinton - I
> Love How You Love Me

"Goodbye Columbus"

> Carla Thomas - Memphis Queen vs. Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

"Hot Rats". One of the first serious jazz-rock fusion albums.

> Jerry Butler - Ice On Ice vs. Lettermen - Hurt So Bad

Abstain.

> Oliver - Good Morning Starshine vs. Steppenwolf - At Your

> Birthday Party

"At Your Birthday Party".

> Rod Stewart - The Rod Stewart Album vs. Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude

Abstain.

> John Mayall - The Turning Point vs. Moby Grape - Moby Grape '69

"Moby Grape '69".

> Yes - Yes - Atlantic 8243 vs. Herbie Mann - Memphis Underground

"Memphis Underground".

> Association - The Association vs. Blues Image - Blues Image

"Blues Image".

> Chambers Brothers - Love, Peace And Happiness vs. Friends
> Of Distinction - Grazin'

"Love, Peace And Happiness".

> Spiral Staircase - More Today Than Yesterday vs. Three Dog Night -
> Suitable For Framing

Abstain.

> Jethro Tull - This Was vs. Little Milton - Grits Ain't Groceries

Abstain.

> Otis Redding - Love Man vs. Steppenwolf - Monster

"Monster".

> Richie Havens - Richard P. Havens, 1983 vs. Watts 103rd Street
> Rhythm Band - Together

"Richard P. Havens, 1983". Love the Zappaesque cover art.

> John Lennon - Wedding Album vs Mike Bloomfield - Live Adventures
> Of Mike Bloomfield & Al Kooper

"Live Adventures Of Mike Bloomfield & Al Kooper".

> David Peel & The Lower East Side - Have A Marijuana vs. Guess Who
> - Canned Wheat Packed By The Guess Who

"Have A Marijuana". David Peel is a riot!

> B.B. King - Completely Well vs. Bee Gees - Odessa

Abstain.

> Charley Pride - The Sensational Charley Pride vs. George Harrison
> - Wonderwall Music

Abstain.

> Joan Baez - Any Day Now vs. Love - Four Sail

"Four Sail", but this is one of Baez's better albums.

> Paul Revere & Raiders - Hard 'N' Heavy vs. Steve Miller Band -
> Brave New World

"Hard'N'Heavy".

> Tom Jones - This Is Tom Jones vs. Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band

> - In The Jungle, Babe

Abstain.

> Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendocino vs. Zephyr - Zephyr

"Mendocino" by a hair.

> Monkees - Instant Replay vs. Ray Stevens - Gitarzan

"Instant Replay".

> Ike & Tina Turner - Outta Season vs. Johnnie Taylor - Who's
> Making Love

"Outta Season".

> Bob Seger System - Ramblin' Gamblin' Man vs. Deep Purple - The

"Ramblin' Gamblin' Man".

"Here We Are Again".

> Grand Funk Railroad - On Time vs. Joe Simon - The Chokin' Kind

"On Time".

> Love - Out Here vs. Pearls Before Swine - These Things Too

"Out Here". But almost too close to call.

> Steve Miller Band - Your Saving Grace vs. Vogues - Till

"Your Saving Grace".

> Rascals - Freedom Suite vs. Ventures - Swamp Rock

"Freedom Suite".

> James Brown - It's A Mother vs. Meters - The Meters

"It's A Mother">

> Bobby Sherman - Bobby Sherman vs. Edwin Hawkins Singers - Let Us
> Go Into The House Of The Lord

Abstain.

> Johnny Winter - The Progressive Blues Experiment vs. NRBQ - NRBQ

"NRBQ". They do a Sun Ra remake: "Rocket Number Nine".

> Barbra Streisand - Hello Dolly! (soundtrack) vs. Cowsills - The
> Cowsills In Concert

Abstain.

> Grass Roots - Leaving It All Behind vs. Joe South - Introspect

"Introspect".

> Mary Hopkin - Post Card vs. Peter, Paul & Mary - Peter, Paul And

"Peter, Paul And Mommy".

Abstain.

> Guess Who - Wheatfield Soul vs. John Mayall - Blues From Laurel

"Wheatfield Soul". I like Mayall's song about staying at Zappa's
house, but "Friends Of Mine" is just too mind-blowing to even
believe your ears. (Can this amazingly absurdist song really be
happening?)

> Monkees - The Monkees Present vs. Supremes & Temptations - On

"The Monkees Present".

"Johnny Winter".

Sorry Joe, Funk #48 is one funk too few, while Laura was fully-formed and
amazing in this period.

Hm. Canned Heat vs. the Canned Band. I'll take the Archies -- despite their
synthetic pedigree pop never came much tighter nor bubblegum tastier.

Despite the title, I don't think this is technically a Mountain album.

Diamond's title track was great, but "Victoria" was greater. Kinks.

Todd, you realize that you just voted for a group that is 2/3 non-North
American over Zager and Evans. You may want to reconsider, I heard that Zager

Indeed. Bobby Sherman is really really embarrassing. But Edward Hawkins
Singers and their religious stuff just gives me hives. What an awful pair to
choose from!

I think I disliked Bobby Sherman as much as Hawkins at the time. (I was 16
in 1969.) But now I see his stuff as a harmless, artificial confection. The
Hawkins stuff I saw at the time as promoting something that that is pure
evil. ("Hated it to death" is about right.) Now I see it as just primitive
and harmful.

I turned 12 late in the year. I liked "Little Woman" then, and didn't mind a
couple of his other hits from 1970.

At that time, and still now, I really didn't care about the lyrics, or the
message of the record. I just couldn't relate to a soulful gospel sound with a
large church chorus like that. It also didn't help that the record was very
long, so when it came on the radio I would have to wait a long time for it to
be over, although I usually would just change the station. Now I really like
the lead vocal on "Oh Happy Day," it's sung with tremendous feeling.

I also experienced the Black church first hand when I got older, as my ex-wife
was Black, and her father was a Babtist minister.

On the contrary, all three of thsoe albums have gotten MORE than one vote

Haven't seen Geir around in ages, and Scarlotti wouldn't know 98% of these
albums, although he would probably give each of the above three albums their
first vote.

The books I looked at said that everyone in 3DN was North American-born
(but they really don't remember) except Hutton, and he was raised in the
US. Who else was non-NA?

Despite the fact that their name comes from a phrase used by
indigenous Australians, there are no Australians, indigenous
or colonial, in Three Dog Night.

Secondly, there were seven original members, not merely three.

Here is their pertinent data:

Chuck Negron (06-08-1942: New York, New York)
Cory Wells (02-05-1942: Buffalo, New York)
Danny Hutton (09-10-1946: Buncrana, Eire [Ireland])
Mike Allsup (03-08-1947: Modesto, California)
Jimmy Greenspoon (02-07-1948: Los Angeles, California)
Joe Schermie (02-12-1948: Madison, Wisconsin)
Floyd Sneed (11-22-1943: Calgary, Alberta [Canada])

I have confirmed the above information from four different sources.

While not a Beatles fan by any stretch of the imagination, I
admire John and Yoko for their intellect, their creativity, their
nonconformity, and their radical politics, as well as their deep
and passionate love for one another. John Lennon also gets brownie
points in my mind for returning his MBE medal in defiant opposition
to the imperialism of the British Empire and for moving to New York
City and applying for permanent residency. Also, John had the
wisdom to use the great Kiowa blues guitarist Jesse Ed Davis on his
records, not to mention a bass player from my high school in
Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, Gary Van Syoc.

That all depends on what your definition of marriage is. I use the
Native American definition that says that a marriage is consummated
by the creation of the couple's first child together, and by that
definition, I have been forever bonded to four women.

Must be in the blood.

By the way, if it wasn't for the "dominant culture" you wouldn't have any of
these records. If Europeons hadn't come over to this country, and it was still
inhabited solely by native Americans you could still be living in a tee pee and
using your archery every night to look for supper.

Seriously, where do you think civilization would be right now if we had to rely
solely on native Americans for any scientific advances that would have
accurred?

By the way, do you have a phone, or do you communicate by smoke signals?

Why use the communication mode of the "dominant culture?"

You should denounce your computer too while you're at it.

Guys like you crack me up. Whenever it's convenient for your position you cry
this "native American" shit, but you have no problem taking advantage of all
the great things that people of Europeon descent have invented.

Your anti-Europeon bias is ass backwards too. You should be angry at those who
came here and took your people's land, the North Americans whose ancestors were
from Europe, rather than those who stayed in their own areas.

Jim Morrison and Frank Zappa could very well have had ancestors who took part
in massacres of American indians. At least you know that couldn't have happened
with the ancestors of people like John Lennon and Ray Davies.

It is indeed a wonderful LP. JED also played on Taj's first LP.
I think its "Statesboro Blues" influenced the Allman Brothers'

I have no idea, but this might be a good time to mention that PBS is
starting their seris on the Blues next week. Since the blues helped
to create rock and roll and a lot of blues songs became famous as
rock songs in the sixties, it might be of interest.
http://www.pbs.org/theblues

NPR is running a parallel radio series on the Blues, starting next Monday.
Though, at least locally, it's running at the same time as the tv series.
http://www.yearoftheblues.org/radio/index.asp

CBC is running the same radio series, on "Radio One", Mondays at 8pm.
It started running two days ago, though I bumped into it hafl way through.
The same episode reruns on CBC "Radio Two" on Fridays at 10pm.

> The local newsgroup bully, Bruce Grossberg, spewed:

All of the sports I named were traditional to Native Americans:
Lacrosse (Haudenosaunee), Tlactli (Maya), the others universal
to most nations.

My nations (Onodowaga and Lenape) never lived in tipis. We lived in
huge multi-family longhouses with the entire city surrounded by a
log stockade. Only a small percentage of Indians lived in tipis. To
project that one architectural style on to all the other nations is
ignorant racial stereotyping.

> Seriously, where do you think civilization would be right now if
> we had to rely solely on native Americans for any scientific

> advances that would have accurred [sic]?

Considering that a number of pre-contact Amerindian civilizations
(Maya, Toltec, Mexica, Inca, Cahokia, Haudenosaunee, etc.) were
in many ways such as agriculture, architecture, astronomy, and
medicine more advanced than many of the European civilizations,
I'd say that the world would be far better off had the invading
conquistadors not destroyed the indigenous repositories of
knowledge.

> By the way, do you have a phone, or do you communicate by smoke
> signals?

There you go with the racial stereotypes again!

> Why use the communication mode of the "dominant culture?"
>
> You should denounce your computer too while you're at it.

Our great prophet and orator Sagoyewatha told us two centuries ago
that it is fine to use any technology to advance our Indianness as
long as we stay true to our traditional spirituality.

> Guys like you crack me up. Whenever it's convenient for your
> position you cry this "native American" shit, but you have no

Technology in the Americas today is a result of a complex web of
numerous multicultural contributions that have combined and
recombined into the world we live in. It was certainly not only
Europeans who invented things. Africans, Asians, Hispanics, and
Native Americans have all contributed greatly to progress. To
learn more about what Native Americans have contributed, try
reading these books:

Encyclopedia Of American Indian Contributions To The World:
Fifteen Thousand Years Of Inventions And Innovations
(Emory Dean Keoke & Kay Marie Porterfield, 2001)

Indian Givers: How The Indians Of The Americas Transformed The
World (Jack Weatherford, 1988)

Native Roots: How The Indians Enriched America
(Jack Weatherford, 1991)

> Your anti-Europeon bias is ass backwards too. You should be angry
> at those who came here and took your people's land, the North

I'm angry at both when the situation warrants it.

The emperors, nobles, soldiers, and religious leaders of the
imperialist British, Spanish, Portugese, French, and Vatican
empires all greatly enriched themselves even at home through the
genocide, slavery, and other exploitation of the indigenous peoples
in their colonies, or else they would not have continued to fund
the expeditions that created and maintained those colonies.

> Jim Morrison and Frank Zappa could very well have had ancestors

> who took part in massacres of American Indians. At least you know

> that couldn't have happened with the ancestors of people like

Jim Morrison most likely did since many members of the paternal
side of his family were in the occupying military forces for
generations. Morrison courageously chose to defy the right wing
part of his family and take more after the left wing heritage of
his maternal Clark side.

Frank Zappa was born in Baltimore, but his father had emigrated
from Italy.

> You've had at least one child with four different women?
>
> That's a lot of squaws.

When you use an epithet that is sexually and racially degrading to
Native American women simply because you disagree with something
that I as an individual have written, you debase your own position
greatly.

"Distinct and diverse, indigenous peoples are nations, born of
the Earth, placed by the Great Mystery in sacred relationship
with our homelands and territories throughout time. Our
ancestors lived free and independent of western colonialism and
subjugation for an untold succession of ages, until the empires
of Christendom invaded our region of Earth, which is commonly
known in the foreigners' tongue as the 'Western Hemisphere'.

Our ancestors gave us the gift of a sacred birthright - which is
our very being as naturally existing nations of people. This
sacred birthright is comprised of our languages, cultures, lands,
deserts, mountains, forests, and our relatives such as the bison,
caribou, salmon, cedar, sage, sweet grass, and corn pollen, as
well as all other forms of animal, plant, and bird life, even the
trees, flowers, and tiny insects. Our sacred birthright includes
our spiritual and ceremonial traditions, our songs and sacred
ceremonial places, our oral histories, and the burial places of
our ancestors.

Our sacred birthright includes our philosophies and sciences,
our economic systems and agricultural practices, our petroglyphs
and artifacts. And our sacred birthright also includes the rivers,
streams, springs, lakes, aquifers, seas, bays, inlets, oceans,
and all bodies of water, the precious and sacred liquid that flows
through the veins of Mother Earth, that sustains all life, and
without which life itself cannot continue.

In totality, our sacred birthright is an inherent right to live in
peace, free of domination, subjugation, colonization, hate, and
war. In short, it is our sacred birthright to live the spiritual
way of life bequeathed to us by our ancestors.

Yet, for more than five centuries, dominating political systems
from Western European Christendom have worked to maliciously and
thoughtlessly destroy our sacred birthright, while heedlessly
disrupting the balance, harmony, and beauty of life in the
process."

Last call today for anyone who wants to vote on this. Deadline is tonight at
midnight EDT.

way.

Okay, here's the preliminary round matchups for the Battle Of The Albums from
