Everything in pop seemed reset by the end of the 70s and it really can't
seem to get back. Is rock and roll dead, has it done everything it
could? Questions from the 70s.
There was an episode of The Simpsons where Homer said the best year in
music was 1974, I've wondered about that. Did someone read posts of
mine years ago trying to explain that year?

I know less about The Strawbs, I just remember their being at least one
single in the early 70s.

I still haven't discovered Big Star. I really didn't like their first
album.
I discovered Love so to speak quite late. Their jazzy sound or whatever
it is leaves me a bit flat. I saw an incarnation of them live several
yeas ago in aus, great night and supporting everything I say about the
60s compared with later years. 7 and 7 is live has to be experienced.
In Australia (or Melbourne really) alternative radio really began in
1977, with some broadcasts of a difficult to listen to station a couple
of years before that, all on FM. See the movie Dogs In Space about that
period. It was all top 40 and what the station deigned to play till
then. The Saints for example were entirely unknown in Melbourne through
all their early singles. But Blondie had success here in 1977 and came
over. There was one only Sex Pistols single played, Pretty Vacant, in
1977. Andy Gibb had the biggest selling single of 1977, enough said.
And I wondered for years why the single The In Crowd by Bryan Ferry came
and went quickly in 1974, one of the best things I have ever heard.
That's the 70s they wanted, but it didn't exist apparently. Schlock
horror like Living In The 70s by Skyhooks, with a badly mixed Electric
Prunes sound in there somewhere. That's the 70s I knew, a single from 1974.
