Some of those songs have a good pedigree, as Leon Russell did
the writing.

I've always wondered where Gary came up with the "Playboys"
name. A nod to Bob Wills, or a tribute to Hugh Hefner? Or none
of the above?

Has anyone seen GL & P lately? I was wondering how well Gary's voice has
withstood time, and if the show was worth seeing....as sappy as some of his

songs were "This Diamond Ring", "Sure Gonna Miss Her", "Save Your Heart For Me"
I have to admit they are still in my collection and still a part of my youth.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Leon Russell wrote some of their
stuff too. Help, anyone?

King Pineapple - I have the GL/P Legendary Masters CD. Here are the
songs (writers). I believe everywhere you see Russell's name, it is
Leon, but I'm not positive:

Autumn (Sloan/Barri)
Count Me In (Glen D. Hardin)
Doin' The Flake (Russell/Leslie/Lewis)
Everybody Loves A Clown (Snuff Garrett/Leon Russell/Gary Lewis)
Face In A Crowd (David Gates)
Girls In Love (Alan Gordon/Gary Bonner)
Green Grass (Roger Greenaway/Roger Cook)
I Can Read Between The Lines (Kenneth Johnson)
I Don't Wanna Say Goodnight (Sloan/Bart)
I Won't Make That Mistake Again (Garrett/Russell/Lewis)
Jill (Garry Bonner/Alan Gordon)
Little Miss Go-Go (Russell/Brown/Leslie)
Loser, The (With The Broken Heart) (Don Nix/Leon Russell)
My Heart's Symphony (Glen D. Hardin)
Save Your Heart For Me (Gary Geld/Peter Udell)
Sealed With A Kiss (Peter Udell/Gary Geld)
She's Just My Style (Snuff Garrett/Leon Russell/Gary Lewis/Al Capps)
Sure Gonna Miss Her (Bobby Russell)
This Diamond Ring (Al Kooper/Irwin Levine/Bobby Brass)
Time Stands Still (Garrett/Russell/Lewis)
Tina (Lewis/Curtis/Russell/Garrett)
Way Way Out (?) promo theme from a movie circa 1966
Where Will The Words Come From (Sonny Curtis/Glen D. Hardin)
Without A Word Of Warning (Snuff Garrett/Leon Russell/Gary Lewis)
You Don't Have To Paint Me A Picture (Leon Russell/Thomas
Garrett/Roger Carroll Tillison)

BTW, I love sappy pop and "This Diamond Ring" was one of my very first
45's so I remember it fondly ;)

Cheers! -Jeanie McWeezl

Al Kooper hates the recording. He wrote it as a blues, but the producer at
Liberty/Imperial got his hands on it and turned it into what we all remember
now. (Can't remember right now the name of the producer, although I'd heard of
him before.)

Kooper was on "Fresh Air" promoting his autobio.

I saw him last fall with the Rock and Roll Army, he sounded just the same
and did a good job on the four songs he sang.

Kooper tends to dismiss that whole period of his career, IIRC. I remember
reading a book about the Blues Project way back in junior high and in it he
was very critical of the stuff he wrote.

Al hates a lot of his "early" stuff, at least that's the
impression I get after reading some of his comments thru the
years. A friend of mine met him recently, and said the man still
has what we could call an "ego" problem.

Pretty sure it was Snuff Garrett.

I saw Gary on a "Happy Together" show with The Grass Roots, Buckinghams
& Turtles (Flo & Eddie) about 13 years ago

My comments:
I don't suppose they told me I was nasal
I don't suppose they told me I was hoarse
I just found out today that I will not be touring and I'm

Sure Gonna Miss It
They Told Me To Kiss It
Sure Gonna Miss It Everyday

I spoke with Gary Lewis in 1991. He said that he sat on the beach in
Venice with Leon Russell and wrote songs quite often. Russell at one
point returned to his homnetown (Tulsa, Oklahoma) and recruited some
musicians to become the Playboys; one of them was Tom Tripplehorn, uncle
of current actress Jeanne Tripplehorn.

I believe it is the same beach where the Doors wrote some of their songs,
such as "Hello, I Love You."
