time the FURTHEST we've been yet in these Singles Battles.....back to
when even the oldest inhabitants of the group were young kids.....
And get ready to commence with....
THE 1950 BATTLE OF THE SINGLES!
Okay,as with previous contests the entrants will all be recordings
that were first issued as 78RPM singles during that year (45RPM was in
its infancy then tho some on the ball labels were already adopting the
format of the future following the lead of the format pioneer RCA)
The list of proposed entries (the makeup of which I believe
aproximates to the makeup of the group as a whole) appears below.
Because it was not unusual in those days for multiple versions of the
SAME song to chart pop I've set a rule to include only the TWO highest
charting versions of a song which I've extended to three versions
where all three all charted Top 10 (as for example in the case of "My
Heart Cries For You" where Guy Mitchell,Dinah Shore and Vic Damone all
made the Top 10)
With that in mind I'm asking for any REALLY IMPORTANT hit record
omissions you see here----this means MAJOR hit records that I might
have missed (but remember---ONLY IF THEY FIT THE CRITERIA LAID OUT IN
THE PRECEDING PARAGRAPH).
I'm also inviting PERSONAL NOMINATIONS at this time from anyone
holding valid contest ID----these can be be anything (including the
hits I might have left out for reasons stated above) as long as they
are bona fide 1950 released singles.Voters can choose up to SIX
nominated records each.
PLEASE!!!!---before submitting lengthy lists of alleged "missed"
releases (and yes Phil Zorn this means you!) PLEASE consider that many
early 1950 hits of all genres were actually late 1949 releases which
is why they don't appear (which explains why Anton Karas' "The Harry
Lime Theme",Red Foley's "Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy",The Ames
Brothers' "Rag Mop",Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Almost Lost My Mind" and
several dozen other big "1950 hits" are not here)

Yeah, know this sounds silly to have to say but there are people out
there that seem to think it a good idea to do this
Okay,I also need to know any record listed that DOESN'T belong--most
likely because its NOT from 1950. The notification of any such errors
or any other kind of mistakes etc will be appreciated and if proved
right,they will be corrected and the record taken out
The cut off time for submitting your personal nominations plus any
additions,corrections etc will be midnight (EST) on SUNDAY 8TH
NOVEMBER.
There will obviously need to be a preliminary round when all personal
nominations are added.This will be published here (and on the website)
on Monday 9th November. Please note that unless the entrant was a bona
fide major (and I mean MAJOR!) hit in its genre then ANYTHING from
the list below is liable to be selected at random to fight that
Preliminary Round (in order to bring the total entrants down to the
required 512 figure needed to start Round One of the Singles Battle
proper).
Snippets of most of the records featured will appear in the usual way
and enough time will be allowed in the Prelimary Round and Round One
for voting with this in mind as happened in the last few contests

researching and coming up with a Swing List for DDD (It is only ONE of
my tools, and sources, and not the deciding factor); for example, says
Duke Ellington's "Cocktails For Two" was a number 1 record, and "Take
The A Train" only made it to # 11. The former is not part of the
essential Duke Ellington, but the latter is an all-time American
classic,
and essential of American music in general, and not just jazz or the
pop charts.
Similarly, "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Fats Waller (the original version)
only reached something like the high 20's according to that same
Whitburn book, and nowadays many regard it as his signature tune.
Views only indicate current or cumulative interest by certain segment
of today's population. I'm not saying HW doesn't deserve some robust
interest, or that isn't a nice thing to see, but you are misleading F
R or anyone else about quality and relevance of any piece of music or
its importance to music history and culture by the number of You Tube
Views some recording gets, or any other unbalanced measurement.
That's only one perspective, not a 360-degree perspective. Why do
like to mislead people so much away from a more logical overview of
measuring the importance of certain pieces of music.
True quality sometimes keeps up with quantity (that happened a lot
with the Beatles), but Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" was a # 1 record in
1968 too, but I wouldn't trade the last good vinyl 45 of even a minor
Morrison & the Doors song existing in the whole world
(hypothetically) for a remastered boxed set of the complete works of
Goldsboro.
Get off this quantity schneid argument; it carries or should carry
little weight. People like F R should give it a large front-end
discount for significance, as I do, as long as you keep putting that

Yet the American people voted Obama for president overwhelmingly and the

I've always considered CNN to be the most "moderate" of the three
leaders. However, their ratings show that people want "opinion"
journalism, like Fox and MSNBC, as opposed to something closer to
straight reportage.
For me, when it comes to election coverage, I always choose CNN as they
aren't as slanted as the other two.
MSNBC is as much a left wing house organ as fox is a right wing one,

It's a real shame on this one. It's definitely from 1949 (I did a LOT
of research in Billboard for this contest. Her record appears right at

As of this moment the total number of contender records is 535 meaning

Do I think "Music! Music! Music" will end up in the final Top 8 of all
contenders as you intimated? No I don't.
What I DO think is that it is a contender in the sense that I included
just four pop records in that "front runner"s thing---"Mona Lisa","The
Tennessee Waltz","Goodnight Irene" and Teresa's song. I see them as
the four pop records likeliest to go furthest in the contest (always
depending on the breaks they get of course).

Yes,of course my taste in music is the best as far as I'm concerned as
yours I'm sure is the best as far as you are concerned. Those are our
subjective views of course since neither of us can "prove" our taste
is better.
As far as opinions about the music and records we discuss on here are
concerned it's a different matter since---as with any subject you care
to name---the opinion being put forth normally carries a lot more
weight if it is coming from someone who a) has studied the subject
avidly and has a deep and abiding knowledge of the records and music
in question b) has a clear long time familiarity with said records and
music and c) has a definite "feel" for,understanding of---and maybe
most importantly PASSION for---said records and music rather than
someone with merely a cursory interest or passing acquaintance.
You don't always have to agree with that opinion of course but I would
have thought it abundantly self evident that an opinion---ANY
opinion----about 1950's music coming from someone like Bruce who quite
clearly has a great knowledge of and familiarity with the music is
worth immeasurably when set against that of someone like Sharx whose
opinion about anything is worthless
