That's on the soundtrack to the film he did "The Fastest Guitar Alive"
around 1967, a Civil War story setting.

Okay, the probable reason you never heard it was that I believe it was
only issued on single in the USA in a badly publicized special MGM
"Celiebrity Scene" series in April 1967 that sold zilch. It did feature
shortly afterwards that year on the soundtrack album from "The Fastest
Guitar Alive" tho IIRC it didnt feature in the movie (as an actor
Orbison was a terrfic singer). And of course that high profile move
from Monument to MGM in the US certainly worked wonders for his
American career....not!

OTOH over here in England where Orbison had insisted on continuing to
have his new releases put out by Decca and where he never appeared on
MGM several of those US MGM stiffs became sizeable British hits
including "There Won't Be Many Coming Home" which was a #16 hit in
1966 in NME.

BTW I show a discrepancy in the reccording date of the song which I
list as 19th December 1966---but the song entered the UK NME chart on
3rd December 1966. Anyone got correct info on this?

Roger, not really any help but probably more questions. It would appear that either the discography date is wrong or the UK got a different version than the US. 45cat shows the single was released in the UK on 25Nov66. Praguefrank lists the date of the recorded version used for the US 45 release as 16Dec66. However, Praguefrank also shows that an unissued version was recorded on 12Aug66. So, the question, Roger, is the UK 45 version the same as the version released on the US 45 (I'm assuming the song on the soundtrack LP is the same as the US 45 version)? If they're the same version, then 16Dec66 must be wrong & the song would have been recorded between Aug-Nov.

Thanks for the input Bobby.

Yes,I see the Aug 66 unissued version as listed by Prague Frank but
The UK London release here is the same as the US "Fastest Guitar" LP
version I'm pretty sure. But I never heard (or even saw) the US MGM
single so can't comment on that.

OTOH the posted versions from Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" movie
(not out here till early January) sound slightly speeded up to me

Yes, it does sound speeded up & it's about 25 sec shorter than the mono
version I have but it's not speeded up enough to create that much of a
difference. Sorry, don't know the original source of my mp3, but it's
about the length of the time listed on the US 45 label.
