For the millions of Elvis Presley I fans who couldn’t afford his LP and EP’s but desperately wanted a few of the selections, RCA Victor is making available in single form, 14 sides from the amazing lad’s packaged disks. The seven platters display the versatile star on slow and fast numbers, rock ’n’ roll and country numbers, and even a Rodgers and Hart song, “Blue Moon”. It won’t be at all surprising if as many as a half dozen hit the best seller lists. And the way this kid is selling records, it’s possible that all 14 will make it. The seven record set is a sensational release for juke box operators. Each disk is sure to be a solid money-maker.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE PLATTERS (Mercury 70948; 70948x45)

“IT ISN’T RIGHT” (2:22) [Mellin BMI—Mellin]
“YOU’LL NEVER NEVER KNOW” (2:32) [Personality BMI—Miles, Robi, Williams]

The Platters, one of the hottest groups in the U.S. today, follow their unbroken chain of smashes (“Only You”, “Great Pretender”, “Magic Touch” and “My Prayer”) with a powerful new two-sider that’s sure to zoom onto the charts in the next few weeks. One deck is a striking arrangement of a terrific shuffle-beat love song tagged “It Isn’t Right”. Solid swinger tailor-made for the teenage set. Another great performance that’s sure to follow in the foot-steps of the crew’s previous waxings. Coupling, “You’ll Never, Never Know” is a dramatic fish-beat love tune that the lead belts in exciting style. Top notch arrangement that’ll have the kids flipping. The kids’ll be running to the stores for this coupling.

CHRIS CONNOR (Atlantic 1105; 45-1105)

“MY HEART IS SO FULL OF YOU” (2:15) [Frank ASCAP—Loesser]
From the smash B’way musical “Most Happy Fella” comes this class ballad which Chris Connor fashions to an up beat in her unique, wistful jazz technique. Pretty side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo-s3ZGYphU

“I MISS YOU SO” (2:20) [Leeds ASCAP—Henderson, Scott, Robin]
Chris gets a sumptuous choral backing for her beautiful rendition of a great standard. Emotional reading that should meet with the approval of dee jays in the pop and jazz fields.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfK5dQ8NI5U

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CLOVERS (Atlantic 1107)

“FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART” (2:15) [Rush BMI—Chuck Willis]
“BRING ME LOVE” (2:52) [Progressive BMI—Whitman, Greenfield, Sedaka]

The Clovers’ come up with a powerful two-sider that bids fair to follow in the footsteps of their current hit, “Love, Love, Love”. The group backs a rhythm item with a ballad and they do two solid jobs leaving the choice to John Q. Public. The rhythm deck, “From the Bottom of My Heart”, is a quick beat bouncer with a joyous feeling. The Clovers handle the tune with an interpretation aimed at both r & b and pop, and we think it can make it in both. The ballad, “Bring Me Love”, is a tender love item, with a really pop arrangement. Softly offered with a female choral assist and delicate
instrumental support. Like it — Like them both.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLYDE McPHATTER (Atlantic 1106)

“I’M LONELY TONIGHT” (2:29) [Raleigh BMI—John Geramite]
“THIRTY DAYS” (2:07) [Progressive BMI—Winfield Scott]

Clyde McPhatter makes his bid for two in a row, following his “Treasure of Love”, still a chart item, with a slow, rhythmic ballad pretty. McPhatter gives the lilt- ing tune a really strong performance, singing “if you think I’m alone,
hoping you’ll telephone, well you’re right”. Stirring romantic weeper with McPhatter getting a strong arrangement to fire up the tune. The flip, “Thirty Days”, McPhatter wails a quick beat rhythm blues. McPhatter’s still lonesome on this deck, as he pleads with his “babe” to come back home. Catchy offering, tho we lean to “I’m Lonely Tonight”.

OTIS WILLIAMS AND HIS CHARMS (DeLuxe 6097)

“WHIRLWIND” (2:24) [Jay & Cee BMI—Dixon]
“I’D LIKE TO THANK YOU MR. D. J.” (2:50) [Jay & Cee BMI—Glover, Snelson]

Otis Williams and His Charms have put two sides together and you’re gonna hafta flip the disk to see which side to go on. Both decks, “Whirlwind” and “I’d Like To Thank You Mr. D.J.” are powerhouse offerings. “Whirlwind” is a middle beat jump with a light headed feeling and a great vocal gimmick in the handling of the title word, “whirlwind”. Happy, swingy offering. “I’d Like to Thank You Mr. D.J.” is a slow ballad lovely that really showcases Williams easy to take vocal talents. The theme is woven around the part the deejay plays in romance. Having been the vital influence in the love affair, the deejay is invited to the wedding. Both are pop potential. Stay close to this release.

THE CADETS (Modern 1000)

"DANCIN’ DAN” (2:25) [Lois BMI—Ward, Marks]
“I GOT LOADED” (2:45) [Aladdin BMI—Harris]

The Cadets come out with one of the most powerful pieces of r & b material ever, in their newest release, “Dancin’ Dan”. The group has chosen to follow their smash effort “Stranded in the Jungle” with the item offered years back by Billy Ward and his Dominoes, then titled “Sixty Minute Man”. With the Cadets zooming on the impetus of “Stranded” and the choice of material, this deck should prove to be another winner for the lads. Keep close tabs on this one. The flip, “I Got Loaded”, is another powerful item that radio censors might frown upon, but it is a cute, chuckley wax that strengthens the release. Like both sides, with heavier expectations from "Dancin' Dan."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAEtk7AU5ug

“BOY NEXT DOOR” (2:34) [Malver BMI—Esther Whitaker]
The Joyettes rock out on the flip as they turn in a swinging performance of a quick beat jump. Teener lindy bait.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANNIE LAURIE (Savoy 1197)

“ROCKIN’ AND ROLLIN’ AGAIN” (2:29) [Crossroads BMI —Billy Myles]
Annie Laurie belts out a quick beat rocker with a full voiced vocal. Deck jumps and the kids can dance up a sweat to it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMCVpakGjQQ

“YOUR PROMISED LOVE” (2:31) [Crossroads BMI—Owens, Woods]
Miss Laurie wails a swinging blues ballad about an unhappy love. The energetic chantress sings out the item with a hearty reading. However the “Rockin’ ” side is the better possibility.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3d5XkMA-5xA

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE BARONS (Imperial 1000)

“DON’T WALK OUT” (1:55) [Commodore BMI — Gold, Ray]
The Barons bounce easily through a middle beat blues pleading, “Don’t go, don’t break my heart”. It is a warm, melodic effort with a strong commercial sound. Ok deck. It has a distinct similarity to “I Know I Was Wrong”.

“ONCE IN A LIFETIME” (2:10) [Commodore BMI — Gold, Ray]
The group lilts effortlessly on a slow blues ballad drifter. Pleasing blend of voices and deft arrangement makes this another good song. Two contender sides be watched.

both sides - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vo3eNaXISs

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRANK MOTLEY (Hollywood 1066)

“WHAT CAN I DO” (2:40) [Claiborne BMI—Motley, Claiborne]

LINDA HAYES (Antler 4000)

“YOU AIN’T MOVIN ME” (2:10) [Personality BMI—Jean Miles]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fk71H9fx50

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk1_m4Hg4kA

“SO SHY” (2:41) [Webster BMI —Benny Ray]
The group dishes up a melodic middle beat bouncer, light, lilting and easy to listen to. Ok but not unusual.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B3F0-YpxFQ

The Cash Box R & B Sleeper of the Week

THE SIX TEENS (Flip 317)

“SEND ME FLOWERS” (1:45) [Limax Music BMI—Ed Wells]
"AFAR INTO THE NIGHT” (2:00) [Limax Music BMI—Ed Wells]

The Six Teens* who took the big jump upwards with their “Casual Look”, pair an intriguing coupling, “Send Me Flowers”, a quick beat jump cutie; and “Afar Into The Night”, a slow ballad pretty. The “Send Me Flowers” etching, combines a swinging beat, a romantic lyric, and the vocal sound and reading of the Six Teens. Deck is a lively bouncer that will appeal to the vast teener market. “Afar Into The Night”, is a direct switch in pace, turning to a slow, drifting love item delicately performed. Another potent threat. Both sides bear watching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKwnYwdZQdM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE DELEGATES / BIG JAY McNEELY (Vee-Jay 212)

“THE CONVENTION” (2:41) [Conrad BMI—Brown, Carter]
“JAY’S ROCK” (2:29) [Tollie BMI—J. McNeely]

The Delegates make their bow with a crazy novelty, “The Convention”, that kids the political conventions. It is a quick beat jump that includes some kidding references to Frankie Lyman and Ellis Presley, and the whole presentation is set against a swinging instrumental backdrop. It is cleverly put together and the Delegates treatment is upper crust. This one looks like a certain hit. The flip, “JAY’S ROCK”, is a middle beat instrumental featuring the Big Jay McNeely horn. Solid rocking offering.

CHARLIE AND RAY (Herald 487)

“CLOSEST THING TO AN ANGEL” (2:05) [Monument-Angel BMI—Singleton, McCoy]
"MAD WITH YOU BABY” (2:31) [Angel BMI—II. Jones]

Charlie and Ray make a muscular thrust at the charts with an infectious middle beat, Latin tempo, titled, “Closest Thing To An Angel”. The duo rocks in zesty fashion, telling of the charms of the lass and the effects she has. Happy ditty, lilting melody. This could be another hit for Charlie and Ray. The flip, “Mad With You Baby”, is a quick beat rocker, that zooms along as the lads belt it in solid fashion. Ok coupler, tho we like the “Angel” side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAR4v5zBU7g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GPvSa35S8U

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JIMMY McCRACKLIN (Irma Records 102)

“YOU’RE THE ONE” (2:29) [Bayside Publications BMI—Geddins, McCracklin]
McCracklin handles a slow, rhythmic blues with a romantic lyric in good style. The deck comes off effectively and it should gainer a good reaction where exposed.

RUSTY BRYANT (Dot 15494)

“HONKY TONK PART II” [Billace BMI — Doggett, Shephard, Scott, Butler]
Rusty Bryant covers the fast moving Doggett hit with a swinging reading that should do very well with Bryant fans. It should cut itself a piece of the business, tho it might be late in a good many areas.

“LONELY CRYIN’ HEART” (2:24) [Randy Smith ASCAP—Vaughn, Wood]
The Bryant aggregation etches a slow, mood instrumental that comes out good listening. Two good sides.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GEORGE JONES (Starday 264; 45-264)

“GONNA COME GET YOU” (2:30) [Starrite BMI—Jones]
“JUST ONE MORE” (2:40) (Starrite BMI—Jones]

George Jones, a recent addition to the “Grand Ole Opry” roster, comes up with a powerful two-sider that has the potential to hit paydirt with either end of the release. The chanter is currently grabbing off a healthy share of the sales and spins with his “You Gotta Be My Baby” and his newest pairing should easily outdistance it. One end tagged “Gonna Come Get You,” is an engaging, fast-paced romantic opus that Jones socks out in sparkling style. The flip, “Just One More,” is a change of pace, middle beat lover’s lament on which the songster drowns his troubles in drink. It’s a potent piece of material that George treats to a penetrating reading. There’s no doubt about it—it’s a twin threat for top honors.

I never would have thought that "Honky Tonk II" could be turned into a yawner, but that's a bout what I think of this version.
