The Cash Box Disk of the Week
JOHNNY CASH (Sun 302)
‘THE WAYS OF A WOMAN IN LOVE” (2:13) [HiLo BMI—Justis, Rich]
“YOU’RE THE NEAREST THING TO HEAVEN” (2:36) [E & MHiLo BMI—Johnson, Atkins, Cash]
One of the country field’s top performers, Johnny Cash, follows up his biggest pop hit to date “Guess Things Happen That Way” with a potent country-flavored coupling that should repeat his success in the pop field and again smash thru in the country market. Both ends are strong and both could climb the charts hand in hand. Take your pick.

JODY REYNOLDS (Demon 1509)
“FIRE OF LOVE” (2:05) (Elizabeth-Johnstone Montei BMI—Reynolds, Sturdivant]
“DAISY MAE” (1:50) [Elizabeth-Johnstone Montei BMI—Reynolds, Sturdivant]
Jody Reynolds, a lad who came from out of left field with his unusual “Endless Sleep” waxing, and sent it into the top ten, proves that he’s not just a one-shot artist with two exciting performances on his latest Demon coupling. The lad gets a thrilling guitar-drum backdrop on the rock-a-ballad side “Fire Of Love” as he chants another emotion-filled love opus that packs a mean wallop. Wild sound. “Daisy Mae”, the jump portion of the coupling, is equally strong-. Side has a foot-stomping Bo Diddley-ish beat. Kids’ll love both ends.

DION and THE BELMONTS (Laurie 3015)
"NO ONE KNOWS” (2:34) [Schwartz ASCAP—Hecht, Maresca]
“I CAN’T GO ON (Rosalie)” (2:13) [Commodore BMI—Domino, Bartholomew]
Dionon and the Belmonts, who skyrocketed to national prominence with their gimmick filled smash “I Wonder Why”, display their versatility on their follow-up disk as they introduce a beautiful ballad effort dubbed “No One Knows”. Top drawer love song that Dion chants with deep feeling as the Belmonts assist with a lyric- less backdrop. Side has great potential. Watch it. The coupling is in the same torrid groove as the crew’s initial hit. Gimmicks are wild. Kids should find both ends to their liking. But it’s the upper portion for the long run.

The Cash Box Sleeper Of The Week
THE TUNE ROCKERS (United Artists 139)
“THE GREEN MOSQUITO” (2:16) [Dimas BMI—Roberts, Wander]
“WARM UP” (2:26) [Dimas BMI—Tune Rockers, Yellen]
U-A has picked up a hot instrumental master that could develop into one of the teenagers’ favorite dance items. It’s a hard-driving rock and roll jumper with a sensational foot stomping beat. And it’s got a gimmick too—every few bars the music stops and a mosquito is heard flitting about the room. The drummer swats at it and nabs it at the conclusion of the number. Catchy item that could make it. The Tune Rockers continue to drive on the lower lid as they belt out another swinger aimed at the younger set.

THE ISLEY BROTHERS (Cindy 3009)
“THIS IS THE END” [Benny Benjamin ASCAP — Benjamin, Marcus]
The group’s lead voice convincingly handles this wistful rock- romancer as the other boys offer soft, sans lyric accompaniment. An honest beat-ballad session.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nQo1Wx5nuQ
“DON’T BE JEALOUS” [Real Gone BMI—Isley]
Another misty eyed opus has greater participation
from the whole group. There’s still a lead voice present.

The Cash Box Sleeper of the Week
MICKEY AND SYLVIA (Vik 0334)
"IT’S YOU I LOVE” (2:15) [Ben-Ghazi BMI—Robinson, Carroll, Gibson]
“TRUE TRUE LOVE” (2:35) [Ben-Ghazi BMI—Robinson, Carroll]
Mickey and Sylvia take a breather from their ballad formula and turn in one of their most exciting sides to date—a number called “It’s You I Love”. The
side’s got a great finger-snappin’ beat and features the team with a good blend against an exciting choral backdrop. Their strongest side in quite some time. “True True Love” is a pretty rock-a-ballad. Top portion could take off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUIN-TONES (Hunt 321) O
“DOWN THE AISLE OF LOVE” (2:39) [Myra BMI—Quin-Tones]
“PLEASE DEAR” (2:21) [Myra BMI—Quin-Tones]
The Hunt label should have its biggest money-maker yet in a fascinating new rock and roll ballad effort by the Quin-Tones under the title “Down The Aisle Of Love”. The use of an organ gives the side an unusual, yet appropriate sound for the wedding setting of the lyric. The group creates an attractive teenage blend and has a wonderful lead voice that sells the romantic love story in grade “A” fashion. Flip, “Please Dear” is a good latin beat rocker. Watch the charts for the upper half.

CHUCK WILLIS (Atlantic 1192)
“MY LIFE” (2:42) [Rush BMI—Willis]
"THUNDER AND LIGHTNING” (2:40) [Rush BMI -Willis]
Atlantic issues the first release by Chuck Willis since the chanter’s untimely death a few months back. And it’s a powerful, two-sided entry
that could follows in the footsteps of what was probably his biggest
coupling' to date, “What Am I Livng For” and “Hang Up My Rock And
Roll Shoes”. One end, labeled “Thunder And Lightning”, is a tantalizing, steady, up beat blues opus while “My Life”, on the flip, falls into the heartfelt, slow paced romantic-ballad category. Excellent choral and instrumental work on both ends of this dual-mart Willis ‘special’.

THE HEARTBEATS (Roulette 4091)
“ONE DAY NEXT YEAR” (2:17) [Kahl, G&H BMI—J, Sheppard]
“SOMETIMES I WONDER” (2:12) [Kahl, G&H BMI—Carter, Sheppard]
The sentimental teenagers, currently involved in summer romances
will probably include “One Day Next Year” as one of their first disks on their ‘must buy’ lists in the coming weeks. The song is a beautiful fish-beat ballad that opens with the artists quickly repeating the title line three times. Should easily fit into the slot vacated by the group’s most recent click, “Down On My Knees.” Bottom side, tabbed “Sometimes I Wonder”, is another potent,
pausing-sighing ballad that the songsters pour forth with telling effect.

RAY CHARLES (Atlantic 1196)
“MY BONNIE” (2:40) [Progressive BMI—Charles]
“YOU BE MY BABY” (2:33) [Progressive BMI—Pomus, Shuman, Charles]
Ray Charles is back on the wax scene with another wonderful revival of an old-time favorite. This time it’s “My Bonnie” and it’s rocked out with the same infectious glee that he injected into his chartriding “Swanee River Rock”. A fabulous arrangement coupled with a superb choral and musical backdrop makes this a cinch for top ten honors in both the r&b and pop departments. On the reverse etching Ray’s outstanding vocal stylings are perfectly showcased, once again, as he spiritedly drives out the house-rockin: “You Be My Baby”. It’s “Bonnie” tho for the quick action.

SHIRLEY & LEE (Aladdin 3432)
“COME ON AND HAVE YOUR FUN” (2:00) [Aladdin BMI—L. Lee]
“ALL I WANT TO DO IS CRY” (2:50) [Aladdin BMI—L. Lee]
The attention-getting qualities of Shirley & Lee’s duet vocalizing are at their peak on the twosome’s newest Aladdin pairing. The artists couple a happy item with a sad one as they enticingly polish off “Come On And Have Your Fun” and “All I Want To Do Is Cry”. The former is a happy-go-lucky rocker etched in the “Let The Good Times Roll”- “Feel So Good” tradition while the latter is a steady beat, crying towel opus that S&L wring out in emotion-packed fashion. Big coupling for the two-market disk collectors.

THE SILHOUETTES (Ember 1037)
“VOODOO EYES” (2:50) [K. Williams BMI—Silhouettes]
“BING BONG” (2:15) [K. Williams BMI—Silhouettes]
The Silhouettes, whose “Get A Job”, shook up the wax industry a short while back, return to their stomping grounds with another power-packed entry labeled “Voodoo Eyes”. The tune, an intriguing affair set to a steady, incessant beat, has what it takes to make the ops, jocks, dealers and rack jobbers really sit up and take notice. On the bottom portion, dubbed “Bing Bong”, the crew delightfully sails over another strong entrant in the rock ’n roll sweepstakes. Deck moves with impact. Don’t lose sight of it. However, the edge goes to “Voodoo Eyes”.

THE SWALLOWS (Federal 12333)
“ITCHY TWITCHY FEELING” (2:25) [Sue BMI—J. Oliver]
The Swallows come up with a top drawer cover of a tune that’s starting to show some territorial action. Sparkling vocal and instrumental
performance on a delectable novelty rocker. Deck should share heavily in the final sales take. Get with it.

“WHO KNOWS, DO YOU” (2:01) [Arnel ASCAP—Rowlette, Gibson]
The artists hand in another fine job on this side as they, with a splendid lead vocal, deck out a moving, fish-beat ballad with touching sincerity. A double-barreled moneymaker

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE BOBBETTES (Atlantic 1 194)
“THE DREAM” (2:21) [Progres sive BMI—Pought, Obrecht]
The Bobbettes, who hit the big time with their quick beat delighter, “Mr. Lee”,
could skyrocket up the charts, once again, this time via the fish-beat ballad path. It’s an emotion-packed offering that the gals dish up with touching sincerity. Could be a smash.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERx_Ll2Njv0
“UM BOW BOW” (2:32) [Progressive BMI—Bobbettes]
Here the chirps put their up tempo-novelty shoes on as they refreshingly romp over a real cute finger-snapper. Dandy coupler.

BOBBY LONG (Glow-Hill 503)
“I SLIPPED-TRIPPED (And Fell In Love With You)” (2:16) [Dazzler BMI—R. M. McCoy]
Bobby Long could ‘stumble’ his way right into the popularity lists, r&b and pop wise, with his Glow-Hill debut. It’s a captivating, gimmicked-up jumper
that Long, assisted in enticing fashion by the Way Singers, socks out in chart-contending style. Keep close tabs on it.

“DON’T YOU RUN” (2:37) [Dazzler BMI—G. Hawkins, S. Bratcher]
Flipside features Long and
the vocal group, on a colorful toe- tapper with a “Little Bitty Pretty
One” flavoring. Solid musical back- drop on both ends.

LOUIS BROOKS & HIS HI-TOPPERS (Excello 2141)
“FRISCO” (2:26) [Exeellorec BMI—L. Brooks]
Louis Brooks and his Hi-Toppers cut loose on an engaging, Latin-flavored instrumental item that oughta have the dancers calling for more and more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTcHNLxu3q4
“OVERTON-LEA DRIVE” (2:31) [Exeellorec BMI—L. Brooks]
Bottom biscuit shows off more of the combo’s top notch instrumental wares as it slickly carves out a swinging ear-pleaser.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE CLEFTONES (Roulette 4094)
“SHE’S SO FINE” (2:15) [Patricia BMI—Cox, Carter, McGhee]
A similarly infectious, gimmicked-up intro that the Cleftones used on their
“Little Girl Of Mine” hit is employed on this contagious, quick beat romantic ditty. Lively jumper that could put the boys back in ‘hitsville’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJ3ylFpBzpw
“TRUDY” (2:35) [Kahl, G&H BMI—Cox, McGhee]
Here the songsters blend prettily on an ultra lovely, gal-titled shuffle ballad. Grade “A” instrumental background for these two, dual-market threats.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE GOSPEL STARLETS (Tuxedo 927)
“ON MY KNEES A-PRAYING” [Ford BMI—H. Toomer]
The Gospel Starlets demonstrate that they can belt out the jubilee-styled handclappers with the best of ’em. Rousing performance that oughta delight the religious wax buyer.
“LORD I’VE TRIED” [Martin & Morris-Rev. W. H. Brewster]
On the lower half the group sends up an inspiring reading on a potent, steady
beat gospel item that the lead works up in soul-stirring manner.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RUSTY & DOUG (Hickory 1083)
“HEY SHERIFF” (2:18) [Acuff-Rose BMI—B. & F. Bryant]
“SWEET THING” (1:50) [Acuff-Rose BMI—B. & F. Bryant]
A Rusty & Doug record hits the wax market this week and it has those coin-catching qualities notched into every groove. Tagged “Hey Sheriff”, it’s a tantalizing, rock-a-billy styled novelty that could put the twosome way up in the hit listings in short order. On it the boys call for a posse to find the heart-thief who stole their gal. Flipside, a delectable, quick beat romantic ditty labeled “Sweet Thing”, is another solid entry for chart honors. A terrific instrumental backdrop rounds out this two-sided winner.
