When we were talking about 1980s music I thought of "I Love You More
Than I Can Say" (or whatever the title was) by Leo Sayer. Its chords
sounded like 1950s music. I didn't realize that it was originally
recorded in 1960 by the surviving Crickets, was released on a single in
the UK under their name, but was released the following year in the US
as by Bobby Vee.
This is a clip from a 1962 movie where Bobby is lipsynching it:

I probably did know this at some point but filed it away in the back
room of my mind since I don't listen to white pop music very much. But
it's a really nice song, and kudos to Leo Sayer for reviving it.

"More Than I Can Say" penned by Jerry Allison & Sonny Curtis was
recorded by the post-Holly Crickets on 29 February 1960 at the Pythian
Temple,NYC.

The Crickets single of it wasn't just a UK release as you seem to
imply but appeared on the Coral label in April that year in both US
and UK(there was however a UK-only single by them in 1961 when Coral
released "I Fought The Law"/"A Sweet Love" here)

The first hit version of the song came a year later when Bobby Vee
climbed to #4 with the song on the NME chart here in UK. In the US his
version struggled to make the lower reaches of the Billboard chart
whilst the flipside ""Stayin' In" was the bigger hit scraping a Top
40 placing

I don't care for the song itself much but if I absolutely HAVE to
listen to it I'll take the Crickets.

Okay, so you're saying these are two different recordings (Crickets and
Vee). I thought Vee was the lead singer of the Crickets after Buddy
Holly's death, so I thought it was the same recording released under 2
different names.

Definitely two different recordings with Sonny Curtis doing the vocal
honours on the Crickets original version

I believe the song was iincluded in some of the Beatles early Hamburg
& Liverpool Cavern live appearances

I have Earl Sinks as primary lead vocalist on the post-Holly Crickets
sessions from November 1958 up until December 1959.

Then Sonny Curtis does the vocal honours for "Baby My Heart" and "More
Than I Can Say" (and probably others) at the February/March 1960
sessions.

Before David Box is drafted in to handle the vocals on their last
Coral session in August 1960 producing "Don'tcha Know" and "Peggy Sue
Got Married" - the grouip then switches to the Liberty label

Incidentally Sonny C. revisits his "More Than I Can Say" song in 1981
with a re-recording for his "Rollin'" album on Elektra.

So it's Sinks on "Love's Made A Fool Of You?"

Of course Holly's original recording predates this one by about six
months but did not see (overdubbed) release until 1964

Holly's version stinks.
